Long Story Short: If you are looking for a caterer for a smaller corporate event, graduation party, birthday party, casual wedding… HIRE NORTH ISLAND CATERING! They are very accommodating, and work their butt off to give you exactly what you want for your event. They make delicious home made food, for a reasonable price. If you are looking for something very large, more high-end, with passed hors devours, or signature cocktails, keep moving. The Details: We hired North Island Catering for our wedding reception for roughly 175 people held at the Haight in Elgin, IL. We wanted a heavy appetizer set up with hand held buffet style food options for dinner. Additionally we had desserts and a late-night food option. We also wanted a full open bar for guests, and champagne welcome. The Food: First off, Allen was very cooperative and flexible when it came to picking out our menu and food options for the event. Unfortunately, we were so busy with mingling with guests, we really didn’t get to try too much of the food ourselves! However, many of our guests gave us great compliments on the spread. Allen allowed us to come in for a ‘tasting’ at his restaurant beforehand to get a feel for the types of food they offer. Everything was delicious, everything! We ended up serving a whole gamut of different hot and cold appetizers, including jalapeno poppers, bacon wrapped shrimp, veggies, fruit, sweet & spicy jelly spread, among others. For dinner we served pulled 2 different salads, pork, tinga, and Italian beef along with a ton of other sides. We received nothing but happy reviews from our guests regarding the food. The brownies got a standing ovation! The late night food was a success, and I saw many people with a hot dog in one hand and drink in the other, working it on the dance floor. The Service/Presentation: Allen and his crew arrived to the event on time, and prepared to get the food out quickly and efficiently. We had a lot of food, and a lot of hungry people. One negative we did feel the need to comment on was the presentation. We requested heavy plastic plates and silverware, and I was a bit surprised to see small white paper plates with purple details instead. The dressings for the salad were set up in large Styrofoam cups, with a plastic spoon to ladle. I felt that this part could have been jazzed up a bit. Food was placed on black plastic trays, and the hot food was kept in metal tins (no problems there). Although not a huge deal, I would recommend having place cards or some way of labeling the food in the future, so guests know what they are grabbing. Alcohol was served in clear plastic cups (perfect), but towards the end of the night it moved to red solo cups, not a favorite of mine, but no big deal in the end. Although not the fault of Allen, I think that in the future allowing the table to be served off of both sides would have eliminated the long line of people waiting to get some grub! Allen and North Island Catering did a great job of getting food out when needed, providing great food, and cleaning up in a timely manner. Our venue had pretty strict policies regarding catering and Allen, and his team, were up for the challenge. The Bar: This is the part of the review where I was a bit hesitant to write. Everything turned out to be okay in the end, but there were some hiccups along the way. Since the beginning of communication with Allen, they let us know that they would like our input on deciding the amounts of alcohol we would like served. Allen had asked us to provide a complete list of alcohol we wanted. We did, and it included some higher end spirits. Allen gave us an updated quote for the alcohol and let us know that anything left over would be ours to keep. After running some numbers and doing the math ourselves, we provided our alcohol estimates to Allen. He stated that he thought it was completely too much. Being a catering professional, we trusted in his work, and let him make the final decision on how much to buy. When we arrived at the venue in the morning (we decorated ourselves the day of), we were surprised to see how little alcohol there was. In our minds, we knew that with our group of friends and family, they would be taking full advantage of a full bar! Our day-of venue organizer also made some suggestions that she didn’t feel the alcohol/mixers would be enough given the size of our large party. We were able to contact Allen right away and voice our concerns. We even offered to have him buy more than he thought we needed and return what was left (as opposed to having us keep anything leftover). Allen understood our concerns, and ultimately brought more alcohol to the event. This was just an unnecessary stress for us on the day of the event. On a positive note, when booze was running low, North Island Catering even went out during the event and bought more. Additionally, a small mistake was made and a different brand of beer was bought than what we previously discussed. (I had time to change the Bar Sign with the correct brand, so ultimately it was no big deal). Finally, we paid to have the bar until 12 (midnight). Not sure where the miscommunication occurred, but the bartenders started cleaning the bar and announcing last call at around 11pm. We had lots of guests coming up to us, wondering why they could no longer get a drink. We did not realize the venue wanted the caterers to be gone by 12, so we were expecting the service to run a bit later. The bartenders continued to hand out beers as they were cleaning, so kudos to them. The Communication: Communication with Allen was impeccable. Allen was always very responsive via Thumbtack, and by phone. (Even when there was a Blackhawks game on). Allen was quick to offer suggestions, answers, and solutions to our questions and concerns within a few hours of us reaching out. If there was any reason to contact them, we knew that he would respond quickly. This was very reassuring since we planned the event completely ourselves. The day of the event Allen was able to answer phone calls and texts without a problem. The Price: The price of this event was very fair, and I think it was worth every penny. Our venue planner demanded that North Island Catering bring more workers to help with the service, and the addition of these people were the only last minute costs we had to endure (no fault of North Island). I appreciated that North Island Catering provided us with a price, negotiated with us to allow us to keep under our budget, and stuck with their promise in the end.

Ravi has been very helpful throughout the ENTIRE [lengthy] process of catering for our wedding. Easy to communicate with and you can tell he really wants to make your event the best it can possibly be. Everyone raved about the food we had at our wedding (meatball sliders, quesadillas, mac and cheese. We went more casual on the food). One of our friends is even going to use him for their wedding after seeing what an amazing job him and his team did. They we are all rockstars and if I ever have another event I will DEFINITELY be using them. You will not be disappointed in them at all.

We selected David to be the chef at our wedding reception (72 people) after meeting with him and working together to create a custom menu of hors d'oeuvres. He was very easy to work with and extremely detailed orientated, but most importantly the food was outstanding. Our guests were very happy and we were able to provide a delicious healthy menu for all. David and his wife were extremely accommodating and made the party easy and fun for us to enjoy. We highly recommend David for your next event.

This was my first time hiring a caterer, and I was not disappointed. This was also my first time using Thumbtack. Had never even heard of it before googling “caterers near me”. Carol of Food with Flair did a wonderful job catering a family outdoor BBQ at my home for my dad’s 90th birthday. We had 25 people in attendance, and many commented on how good the food was. She was very responsive from the moment she and I were matched through Thumbtack, all the way through my event. She helped plan the meal, making suggestions on food items that were popular at other BBQs she had catered; arrived promptly the day of the event with much of the food prep completed and the remainder completed once she arrived; provided the warming trays, serving dishes, and serving utensils; grilled the meat (hamburgers and chicken) on my Weber grill; set up the serving table; had the meal ready in a timely fashion; put away leftovers for me; and left my kitchen clean. She also was able to work with dietary restrictions. She offered to provide paper goods and make arrangements for other supplies (e.g. canopy), which I declined. She brought two pineapple upside down cakes (my Dad’s favorite), and because we had neglected to discuss which of us would provide the candles, she decided to play it safe and brought a “9” & a “0” candle for one of the cakes. For the other cake she had a friend create a diecut that read “Happy 90th Birthday” in colors that coordinated with the cake. It was a nice, thoughtful surprise. While I had thought about asking whether she offered tastings, I didn’t due to the small size of my party; the short time frame between booking the party and the event itself; and her experience as an executive chef. I trusted that the food would be good, and it was. But I can’t share whether she offers tastings or not. My husband and I were very pleased with the service Carol provided and would definitely use her again.

Josh was the head chef for our wedding of about 215 people and he absolutely killed it! He took care of everything, a real full service experience, so we could focus on more important things, like getting married! The food he made was absolutely incredible. Marinated chicken breast, avocado salad, chipotle roasted potatoes, you name it! Many wedding guests personally told us that it was the best wedding meal they had ever had. Some even said it was one of their favorite meals ever, and wanted the recipe. I give a complete recommendation for Josh. His professionalism, his talent, and his personality really make him one of a kind.

Maya truly went above and beyond for our wedding day! She was the manager for our event before starting her own company and she KILLED IT! She provided incredible and helpful expertise throughout the planning process and especially on the day - Maya and the rest of the staff did more than we even expected them to (like folding napkins and lighting candles, for example). Plus, the food was amazing. We knew early on that we wanted fried chicken and Maya was able to serve it hot and crispy to 140 people; we got tons of compliments on the food and the service. Overall, she made our reception so easy and wonderful - we couldn't be happier!

Divine Treats & Heavenly Eats is definitely one of the best and well organized catering services you can ask for. I had a cupcake decorating party for my daughters 6th birthday. While Alysha was a tab late, everything was set up for the party on time. She was great with the kids and they all had a blast! It requires some patience to handle 12 screaming girls but Alysha was so kind. She cleaned up afterwards too. It was fantastic! Each child got a cute little apron as well and while their cupcakes weren't perfect, they loved sampling the frosting along and just had a good time.

Cheffield Events & Catering has to be one of the best caterers we have hired for the office. The food smelled and tasted amazing. Everyone was going back for seconds and thirds!!! We are a picky bunch, but we will be using Cheffield's in the future. They were prompt, professional and the presentations was great. We loved that they printed up a menu for our small gathering. Usually I never leave a review on any social media, but this was an exceptional effort that should be commended. Kei and her team put a tremedous amount of effort into our wedding rehearsal dinner. The food was fantastic and the decorations were beautiful. They even helped us customize a menu that tailored to both of my American and Asian guests.     Look no further for the utmost professionalism and the best quality food/catering! I cannot rave enough about Michael! I hosted my baby shower at my townhouse in Lincoln Park. Most of my family is on the east coast, so the guest list was only about 20 people. I knew I didn't want myself or another guest to have to worry about cooking and a few of my guests have specific dietary restrictions so I wasn't comfortable ordering from a restaurant. One of my friends works at the law firm where Michael is the chef and passed along his information, letting me know he also caters these types of private events. Plus, she kept RAVING about how awesome his food is. Michael was so refreshing to work with from start to finish. He was responsive, detail oriented, and extremely professional (not to mention so friendly!) We had an initial phone meeting to discuss menu ideas, dietary restrictions, and theming. He got back to me with a preliminary menu (including a full ingredient list) and questions regarding what my kitchen was capable of (how big my oven is, how many burners I have, etc.) As I said, very detail oriented. He also came up with thoughtful, creative ideas for my friend's dietary restrictions so they could enjoy the "fun" treats, too! One of my favorite gluten free treats were his dark chocolate coconut tarts- totally delicious. The day of the shower he arrived right on time with everything we discussed for the final menu. He was professional and completely unobtrusive. He ensured all of the food was the correct temperature when served. He even came prepared with ingredient cards to put out with the food. Everything was DELICIOUS. But I think the best part of hiring Michael was that he left my kitchen SPOTLESS! I swear it was cleaner than when he started. Seriously, look no further for in-home catering. I already know who will do Baby Rose's first birthday party. I swear, Michael is Chicago's best kept secret.
