Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Mover offers option of customer renting truck or mover renting truck and including it in total package. Renting your own truck is best. Great local moving company. Very contentious, professional, and careful with my belongings. Followed up 2 days after my move to make sure I was satisfied.

Moving can be a stressful situation. RTO Express was fantastic, hiring this company made my move easy and virtually stress free. John was extremely professional, punctual and paid very close attention to detail to ensure that nothing was scratched or damaged during the move. He was very flexible as far as working with my schedule, responsive, and extremely pleasant. I highly recommend this company!

Door 2 Door Moving Service REALLY came to the rescue for me. I initially hired another moving firm (Kennebrew Moving and Transportation Logistics) through ThumbTack. I retained them to move a kitchen table, four kitchen chairs, a couch, a loveseat, two living room tables and to disassemble, move and reassemble a trundle bed. Kennebrew got all of the items to my home before telling me that the “couch was too big“ to fit through my doors and that they were uncomfortable reassembling the trundle bed. They therefore left my couch outside uncovered and unprotected and left the trundle bed disassembled. Not wanting to leave my couch outside, I contacted Door 2 Door Moving Service through thumbtack at 4 in the evening. I told them the urgency of my situation and within one hour they were at my home. They were than easily able to get the couch into my home and into the basement. They also were able to reassemble the trundle bed. They came through for me BIG time. This experience showed me that not all moving companies, not even all moving companies you find on ThumbTack are the same. You should hire these guys without reservation and with full confidence that they are the REAL DEAL. Kennebrew Moving and Transportation Logistics on the other hand, avoid them like the plague.

I wish we could do more than give these guys a great review. The whole moving experience is stressful and normally is not fun. These guys were THE ONLY GOOD thing about our move. They were on time, efficient with every inch of space, with every second of time spent, and had a wonderful attitude about any change we made. Do NOT go to any other mover!!! These guys are the BEST!

The crew at Kennebrew are very hard working. Very nice, high attention to detail, and ask the right questions about care and placement of items. They were running a bit behind schedule, but I was informed very frequently about the new timeline. In order to keep things timely, we as customers must inform the movers of every aspect of the move—it is at no fault of the crew due to the earlier customers lack of readiness. I hopefully won’t be moving anytime soon, but Kennebrew will definitely be recommended to my friends and colleagues. Thanks again guys, you made today easy and way less stressful!!!

I highly recommend HM&M moving! They responded promptly to a short notice request for move assistance. There work was amazing. They were extremely professional. They kept me notified of their arrival time which was within the time provided. They provided a door mat for cleaning their shoes upon each entry. They also masked upon each entry. They were very careful with times and wrapped sofas and ottoman. Honestly, I was amazed I received such service for such a reasonable price!

The movers did a good job loading everything up and unloading our furniture and boxes at our new place. I really did not appreciate that they left all of their trash at my old apartment for me to clean up (pieces of plastic wrap, used up tape rolls) that just adds more work for me. At the new apartment they moved everything in and I wish they had shoe covers to put on instead of walking all over my brand new carpet, but they didn’t have any. One of the guys damaged my wall and chipped the plaster and paint because he hit my TV on the wall when he was walking with it. Another guy was assembling my office table and when he went to pick it up he broke a piece of it off and dented and scratched up my table. He did apologize and tried to fix it and paint over the scratches which was okay, but this should have never happened if they were taking their time instead of rushing about the move. I do feel bad because my move was on the third floor so I understand they got really tired going up and down three flights of stairs. I could not have done this move without them so I appreciate their help immensely; the only thing I’m bothered about is all the damage I received at my new apartment.

They were hired to move my mom, but couldn't complete the job that day (THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN) They were very apologetic, very professional and offered to come back to finish the job. I'm going to hire them again.

STI Movers were good and punctual both at pick-up and drop-off. The price also seemed reasonable, but only that the initial quote was sort of tricky, because inspite of giving the details in email, some item or the other was missed off the quote, so had to verify and validate the inventory list in the quote. Apart from the quote, the move went really well, and the stuff was delivered in 7 days (5 business days) after my first available date. The Staff at pick-up and drop-off were very nice and had a nice smile, keeping us warm.

I didn't use this company after all only because it wasn't until the end of our conversation that found out I couldn't use my charge card to pay for the move. I didn't want to have to use cash or buy a money order to pay them. Everything else such as customer service, the estimate, and scheduling was great, just that one thing was an issue for me.

Guys were very polite. My reason for giving them 3 stars instead of 5 is because they were 2.5 hours late if i recall correctly. I had originally requested 8 a.m start time. Well the guy i communicated with via email pushed the 7am time because it was open. So i agreed. Got my kids up super early to get them ready for school so I could be ready to meet with the movers only for them to call to say they were running late. Supposedly an accident on the highway at about 7:30am. Im sorry but if you are suppose to be somewhere at 7 you dont leave ur place at 7. Unless you can teleport then yes you are going to be late. I have to say the move went rather quickly because i had everything ready just to be picked up and set on the truck. Again the guys were polite, they were pretty satisfactory for the amount I paid. They would've received 5 stars from me had they been there on time. Due to their tardiness I was late for other appointments throughout the day and had to cancel 2 other ones. Shame on me for thinking they would arrive as scheduled. I would say if you are on a tight budget give them a call. Their rates are the cheapest I found but just make sure you leave time in case they are late.
