Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

Wrights was able to come to my home same day. Only $75 service fee, which covered the repair, compared to the $130 service fee I was quoted by another electrician who was booked three weeks out.

I contacted Hector for my electrical needs. I wanted to hire Hector but he is not a LICENSED electrician and is unable to pull permits. More like a handyman. So wish he would have told customers this on his page.

The electrician texted back first thing Monday morning(sent request on Sunday). The crew was able come right out on that day (Monday). They did an excellent job diagnosing the issue and getting it fixed! Would definitely use them again!

Simple electric outlet installation to mount a TV. Called to explained the project, got a fair quote, scheduled a time, and they arrived when expected. Work was done relatively quickly and the work area was clean/like new when they left. Very good electrician for a simple update!

The electrician was able to respond in a matter of minutes and scheduled an appointment the same day. The main issue was my garbage disposal that hadn’t work for weeks and within a matter of minutes he was able to get us back together. Their Friendliness and expertise is why I will be using them for all my future needs!

The electricians were on time and did the work in a very efficient and happy manner. I was very glad they did the job. However, other reviews are accurate- they did not provide an estimate or even talk about their fees before starting and completing the job. Their work was worth the money, but more transparency would have been nice.

Just WOW!!! The electricians responded to my request within minutes. They came the same day and it only took them like 10 minutes to fix the outlet. And no, we didn't need to just flip a switch on the circuit breaker. There was an actual problem and they fixed it that fast. They'll be doing our future projects in the new year. Thanks!

Paul is one of the few truly nice guys in this world of ours. On time, showed his expertise in diagnosing my problem, stayed to make sure it was totally fixed, charged a very fair price for his work... And I will never ever use another electrician again. Thank you for finding him for me... Simply the best

I tried to install a bath vent fan with a light on my own and ran into issues. I reached out to their company and the electrician responded quickly to my request and was able to come and resolve my issue the next day. I also appreciated them for explaining the process to me at the end of my service. I will be using their services again! Thanks again!

Paul was great! He was very professional, yet friendly. I have total confidence in his ability as an electrician and would definitely hire him again for any electrical needs. He and his employee installed under-cabinet LED lighting, added two receptacles in my garage, wired in three receptacles in my sun-room, and moved a lighting switch. Thanks Paul!

Sulaiman did a few jobs for me around my house: he replaced two pendant lights, moved and added some outlets/boxes for a new kitchen cabinet I had installed, installed an under-cabinet light, and added a new outdoor box on my deck. He was communicative, punctual, and does high quality work. I plan to use him again in the future whenever I have need for an electrician.

Had a small kitchen Light switch job, which I already knew to be small from the start. Derrick arrived to state what I already knew, which was a bad switch. Said the cost would be $250 + 75. When asked about the $75. He stated $75 service call. This is quite literally the most by the dozen or so electricians I've hired out in the past. Usually its $50 for estimate of trip cost, maybe$75, but I've had electricians roll the cost into the repair if they are getting the job. This is the equivalent to a loose wire job taking no more than 20 minutes. I've had these charged at $150 -200 at the very high end. Total bill at the end was $347.75. He charges a Tax on Service (in the state of Indiana). I have dozens of SFH rental homes in Indy and in the 7-8 years I've been doing this, I've NEVER paid tax on service. When confronted about this, he stated "Well It works, doesn't it?" Trust me, pick someone else. You could get the job done in half the cost of what he will charge you. And to pay TAX on SERVICE? It's criminal. ~Elisabeth

Unprofessional, arrogant and slow. I paid in full. The job is still incomplete. Don't hire. And if you do, do not pay anything in advance. You will be met with disrespect all the way. I paid every amount that was ever asked and I still have incomplete work. The work that was completed wasn't timely or well done. Nothing but regrets on my side. DeMario is a coward and he ghosted after my last payment. I have to find another electrician to complete the work I paid him for. It should also be a clue that he has changed the name of the organization on Thumbtack. I would also avoid Thumbtack. They offer no support in these situations.

Not Trustworthy! Initially we had a great experience with Paul and his other electrician. They installed an outlet in our crawl space and it worked just fine for about a month and a half. When it stopped working they sent someone out again to take a look and after what seemed like a thorough review they said they couldn’t figure it out and said they’d be back the next Monday at 9am. They never came back and said that their child was sick and were trying to rearrange the schedule, which I was very understanding of, but then they never returned any of my texts or calls. We found another review in which they did the same thing to someone else saying their child was sick and then never returned their calls.

I live in Florida and my mother lives in Indiana. She text me this morning that there was a problem with her circuit breaker and half her house didn't have power. She can be very hard-headed and would try to fix it herself. I contacted Rinder Electric and could not be happier! They fit my mom into their schedule the same day and then were 2 hours early! Cody fixed the issue with the breaker in no time and Ryan called to ensure I was kept in the loop with the repair! Thank you so much! I have saved their information in my phone in case anyone else in Indy needs an electrician. Thank you so much Ryan and Cody!

I hired him because his profile was easily visible and he has good reviews from several people. Plus when I asked for the quote he knew exactly why I needed a contractor, which made me feel confident that he can get the work done. We are selling our home and the buyers needed some work done based on the inspection report. Paul came on time and did a fantastic job. He went above and beyond what other contractors did by taking before and after pictures for me to send to the other buyers. He is also really nice and professional and the price is reasonable. I gave his business cards to my realtor to refer him to other clients since my realtor was looking for good reliable (and Paul is a certified electrician) contractors to work with.
