Both Karen and Scott are very professional. Scott tried to get the job done on the very day but has to split it to two day due to the extreme heat weather. It is understandable that no one should work on the roof on the extreme hot temperature day. His work is very good and I would highly recommend them.

Here to inspect AC/heating vents that were not performing well. Found the problem which was in the lower part of the furnace that needed cleaning. Mr. Mike cleaned that part and air flow improved greatly. He's knowledgeable, nice and does excellent work...highly recommended!

The garage and house were stripped down to wood. A new roof and skylight were installed in a day. When I shared my concern regarding the rain forecast, I was assured the work would be completed before the rain started. As promised, the work was completed and all debris were cleared from my property. Reasonable pricing and you get to select your shingles from a variety of colors and textures. I highly recommend General Roofing Inc., for your consideration.

American Bonded worked at replacing some rotted wood on my roof due to a water leak and then replacing the shingles on my roof. Fred gave me an initial quote and then responded to additional requests I had for replacement of gutter flashing, etc. as well as relocation of some of my roof vents, all without changing his original quote. He communicated with me throughout as to the water damage and overall condition of the roof that he was finding as the job went along.

Though I live in Connecticut, I am originally from Waukegan, where my parents, who are in their mid-80s, still live. Whenever, I visit them, I try to ensure their house is in order – literally. While there in March, they mentioned they had a leak in their ceiling after a storm. The insurance adjuster who came said it was not major, but would require a roofer to make some seals around the vents on the roof. I looked around on the web and Loyola Roofing was one of three places I called. I really needed someone to come promptly as I wanted to get it taken care of before I returned to Connecticut. Phillip came out that weekend. He completed the job and afterward, he inspected the roof. While up there, he noted something the adjuster seemed to have missed: a big hole on the other side of the house near the roof-line where it appeared an animal had torn and gotten in. I was glad he spotted it. The pest control guy came out and said it was a squirrel. I learned a lot about squirrels beyond the creatures that grab acorns and scurry up trees. He set the traps and said he would be back in a week to check them. I would be gone by then. A week later, after the pest control guy collected the traps and completed his part in sealing the hole, we needed Phillip to return and do more work to replace the shingles and wood. Though I was in Connecticut, nearly a thousand miles away, Phillip kept me informed all along the way. When he encountered trouble matching the shingles to the house, he went to Chicago and found the shingles to match as close as possible to the original. When bad weather kept him from coming out on the day he was scheduled to complete it, he texted or called me. He was respectful, conscientious and understanding of my desire to ensure my parents had their repairs done. I would recommend Phillip to anyone who needed their roof repaired. Though I was a thousand miles away, he went the extra mile to help me ensure my parent’s house was in order. Frank Hamden, CT (by way of Waukegan)

Wow is all I can say! Karol came out on a Thursday to give me a quote on a roof deck custome wood wall, which was very reasonable. His team came out the following Monday and completed the project by Wednesday evening...efficiency cannot be overstated! The work product was of great quality and we are very satisfied. Glad we have found a reliable contractor!

I really liked my experience with Denzel. He was very knowledgeable and let me know what he was doing (for example, he let me know that he was going to walk around to check the vents throughout the house) and explained everything clearly. Would definitely use him again!

Amazing service. I could not have asked for a better roofing company. Everything went amazing. Ali worked well to help process my insurance claim. He picked a great color for the roof. His contractor showers up early and worked late until they fished the job. I had a whole new roof and gutters in 3 days. I'd recommend him to anyone!

Mobile home roof repair and reseal. It was a pleasure doing business with this company. Tony Zuko contacted me immediately and we arranged a visit. His contractor Tom came out the following day and estimated the repairs. He thoroughly explained my options. We then negotiated a fair price and the job was completed in one day, the following day. Nothing less than exceptional professionalism every step of the way. They will be returning next spring to my home for additional work I would like done.

As a business owner I have had some problems with roofers in the past, so when I hired Shield I was a little nervous and worried that they might not stop the leak or honor the warranty but it was a emergency so i took the chance. Well its been almost a year and i am very pleased with the work, I had some water come in right after a big storm and I called them in to honor the warranty they got here within a hour and when they checked the roof the problem was not the roof but the gutter that i had someone else install. They fixed the gutter and I never had a problem after that. If I ever need any other work done I will give them a call. Thank You

We had a couple of leaks inside of our house due to some bad workmanship from the contractors that flipped our house and installed the roof. Pete and Nick came out in a timely manner, very professional, great responsiveness. They came out and made the necessary repairs and i'm very happy we went with them.

I will highly recommend this roofing company. They replaced my entire roof down to the deck and installed brand new high quality plywood. They are very professional and really know what they are doing. Dave Miller is the person I dealt with. Very honest business owner. He gave me the correct advise on how to move with my roofing project. Absolutely no rip off business. They arrived on time and got the job done on time. I had couple minor problems during the work but it was very well professionally addressed and I got reimbursed with no questions asked. Their pricing is very competitive. I would highly recommend home owners to contact APR contracting first before talking to other contractors. Thanks.

Chad did a great job for us. He was on time- did a great job prepping and painting our bathroom, built and installed an access panel for us and cleaned out our dryer vent. He was very professional, made some helpful suggestions regarding a bathroom fan and cleaned up too. We would hire him again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
