We hired Karen as our Day of Coordinator; however, she also helped us the month or so before the wedding by following up with vendors and helping us organize our decor. We had a lot of decor that needed to be set up for our wedding. She organized everything and set it up exactly as we had envisioned. Very organized and professional!

Grace did an AMAZING job! She took care of my engagement pictures, save the dates, two wedding ceremonies/reception, my thank you cards/magnets and i plan on having her do a "trash my dress" session also. She went to both of the venues a week before the weddings to plan out poses and get the lighting right so she was fully prepared the day of my ceremonies. She was one of the first and last people i saw on my Wedding Day and was able to capture every important moment throughout the whole event. My pictures turned out so unique and beautiful! She was so personable and went above and beyond her job description! I have a huge family and my husband has a very awkwardly broken up/ blended family but she handled it prefectly to where we got exactly the pictures we wanted. Grace exceeded my expectations and made the event a very positive experience! I will definetly be using her in the future and i highly recommend her to everyone!

Jenna was an amazing day of coordinator. I have nothing but positive words for her! We were her first Chicago wedding and she did an outstanding job. She made sure that our wedding day flowed cohesively. We had a Plan A and B for weather--when the weather chose not to cooperate with us, we notified Jenna and she helped successfully execute our Plan B (indoor wedding plan) without a hitch. She worked extremely well with all of our vendors. Jenna was very professional and timely with her responses to emails and text messages. On our wedding day, Jenna went to great lengths to make sure my husband and I were comfortable. For example--I was exhausted prior to the ceremony and needed caffeine. Jenna made sure that I had my sugar free red bull within 15 minutes! With all the craziness of wedding planning, I forgot to make special charms honoring my late grandfather for our floral bouquets. Jenna went out of her way to make a special Target trip on our wedding day to make our charms. This gesture meant a lot to me. Jenna is an incredible asset to the bride who hires her! In addition to her high level of professionalism, she is also very organized and detail-oriented. She made very thorough timelines, photography schedules, and checklists that were very helpful on our wedding day. Her completeness helped allay a lot of the stress that comes during your wedding week. Jenna comes with our highest recommendation! She is extremely capable, highly competent and very professional. You will not be disappointed!

I am a professional interior designer who has coordinated numerous weddings -- doing all the floral, designing and making bouquets, corsages, etc. including table arrangements. I have worked with all styles -- minimal, modern, formal, garden or glitzy, accomplishing a desired theme by the bride and groom. I have supervised and helped decorate venues, churches and whatever the need is. For several years, I had a small floral business on the side while doing furniture design full-time. I am very good with color and in designing a "complete, unified look."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

How much does it cost for a wedding planner?

Wedding planning is a full-time job — unless you hire a professional to handle the hard work for you. The cost for a wedding planner will depend on the level of service you desire. The least expensive wedding planner option is day-of coordination, then partial service, then full-service.

The national average cost for wedding planning is between $990 and $1,300. Costs are greatly affected by region, with rural or smaller-town wedding planners often far more affordable than planners in higher-cost cities. Here are some examples of the various levels of wedding planning and their potential average costs:

  • Day-of-wedding coordination: $800-$1,700. Day-of services can include the planner finalizing all details, creating a timeline, confirming vendors and overseeing all setup, day-of activities, and cleanup. The couple does all the front-end planning and contracts all the vendors. Time commitment could be about 15-25 hours, depending on pricing.
  • Partial service: $1,500-$3,800. Here the planner works with the couple from the beginning, helping contract vendors, creating a timeline, and overseeing all details of day-of execution. Time commitment could be about 30-60 hours, depending on package and pricing.
  • Full service: $3,500-$8,000 or more. Here the professional handles all wedding and planning details including working on design, securing rentals, getting the venue and vendors, and handling complete execution of the event. Time commitment could be 50-150 hours or more, depending on package and pricing.
  • Consulting: $50-$150 per hour for design, vendor, reception and other wedding planning consultation.
