Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for appliance repair?

While the average cost of appliance repair is $65, the price can range from $45 to $120. A technician may set a flat rate or charge by the hour. The average hourly cost is $65, although this can range from $40 to $95.

Appliance repair technicians typically set their prices depending on the type of appliance, level of difficulty and other factors. Some pros may also charge a service fee or a consultation fee, and they might also offer discounts for new customers.

How do you tell if your fridge is broken?

Use your nose — and ears — to tell if your fridge is broken and it’s time to call a pro.

The first clue is whether your food is expiring too quickly. Your fridge should be at or below 40º Fahrenheit and your freezer should be at 0º, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If temperatures deviate from these figures, the result can be food spoilage (from too much warmth) or even a frost buildup (from a faulty freezer).

Other telltale signs that your refrigerator is broken are excessive noise, escalating electric bills and excessive heat from the back of the fridge.

If you think your fridge might be broken, don’t delay — contact the top appliance repair technicians near you today.

Is it worth it to hire an appliance repair technician?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire an appliance repair technician instead of replacing the unit or doing the repair yourself. The first is to keep your warranty valid — doing a DIY repair on a home appliance may void some warranties.

Another reason is having the proper tools. While you may need to go buy extra tools to perform a repair, a technician will have the tools ready.

Hiring a pro can also help ensure a long-term fix instead of a band-aid solution, as an experienced pro will be able to assess the equipment for function.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator?

In some cases, it might be cheaper to repair a refrigerator — in others, your best bet is to just buy a new one. The decision to repair or replace a refrigerator will depend on several factors, but the most important is cost. If the cost to repair a fridge is much more than the cost of buying a new one, it’s time to replace the fridge.

What are the advantages of hiring an appliance installer?

There are several perks to having a professional install your appliances, including:

  • Hiring a pro saves you time and money. If it breaks down, the service person who sold and installed the machine can fulfill its warranty. However, this warranty could be void if you install it incorrectly.
  • It will work reliably. Many appliances like ranges and laundry machines rely on being on level surfaces as well as having potentially dangerous hookups installed correctly.
  • You can get repair and maintenance support. If something isn’t working or you want advice, you can call up your installer and ask if they can help you troubleshoot or repair it.

How much does it cost to install appliances?

Installing a new appliance costs $125, on average. However, homeowners should expect to pay within the range of $120 to $150.

For less complex appliance installations, you may pay a low-end cost ranging between $65 and $100. On the other hand, more complex appliances like laundry machines, ranges and other items can cost between $175 and $326 to install. Ask whichever appliance installation service you hire to give you a price quote, if possible.

Should you tip appliance installers?

You can tip appliance installers if you feel their service has gone above and beyond. A standard tip is between $10 and $20.

Reasons you might consider tipping include a very pleasant customer service demeanor, having to carry a heavy appliance up or down the stairs, working in inclement weather, taking care not to make a mess and other acts of care and consideration. You are not obligated to leave a tip — but one is always appreciated.

Is appliance repair easy?

While some appliance repairs like cleaning the inlet filter on your washing machine or cleaning a smelly dishwasher are perfect DIY projects, others are better left to the pros.

Certain jobs can be dangerous and risk extensive damage, such as repairing gas lines or leaks. Others require experience and know-how, such as balancing a clothes washer, replacing electric wires, rewiring appliances and more. If you’re not sure how to get it done safely, contact the best appliance repair technicians near you.

What types of appliances can a professional install?

There are a number of different appliances that professionals can install for you, including:

  • Washers and dryers. These machines are heavy and very sensitive to being level and balanced, and also require hookups to water, electricity and sometimes gas or propane.
  • Cooking ranges. Your range may use propane or gas, which is a hookup job best left to the pros.
  • Microwaves. You may want to have your microwave be an undermount or in-mounted unit, which a pro can install and make it look seamless.
  • Refrigerators. These are heavy and often require a water hookup.
  • And more!

Reach out to an appliance installation service, and find out if they can install your appliance. Often, it’s helpful to provide the brand and model of the appliance you’re trying to set up.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an appliance repairman or specialist when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an appliance service specialist or repairman, check your local news for community guidelines and follow the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Discuss safety protocols with the appliance repairmen before they enter your home. And when they enter your home, stay at least 6 feet apart, don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

If you decide to postpone the work, consider buying a gift card from them or paying for future work. This is a great way to give back to the community, as many small businesses and individual contractors are feeling the economic effects of social distancing.

Reviews for Ashburn appliance service professionals
Sara C.
When I hired Seth I made sure to let him know exactly what all my appliance install project entailed and I was initially impressed with how fast he replied, could fit me into his schedule on a Sunday and the fact that he gave me two price points depending on how difficult the job would be since I wasn’t sure if the fit would be perfect considering I was replacing a 27 inch combo microwave/oven unit with a 27 inch double oven that seemed slightly taller. I was hoping the cabinet wouldn’t need to be cut but I knew if it did there was enough space around my old one and it would only be an inch or so on the top or bottom and I had tools he could use if necessary. Unfortunately after measuring multiple times and prepping the wall Seth attempted to lift the heavy appliance and broke 2 of the front glass pieces. They shattered and without a replacement the job could not be completed that day. I knew it was an accident since I had been watching the install and he apologized and promised to make it right the next day and left all his tools guaranteeing he could get the parts within 24 hours. The next day he contacts me to say he found an exact model oven but he needed me to outlay the cash to buy the whole thing which meant prepaying over half the agreed cost of the job up front. So far everything he had done seemed on the up and up since I knew he was trying to do a good job by indulging all my nitpicks about everything being perfectly clean and in order before moving on to the next step so I did go ahead and take the risk and prepay. It was a nerve racking experience to be so invested at this point and be putting so much trust in this guy I didn’t really know. When he does finally come back late the next day with the parts it was a big relief but then the oven just barely doesn’t fit in the hole because he didn’t measure right and he has a hell of a time cutting the last quarter inch. Once he finally gets it into the wall and begins repairing the front wouldn’t you know it but he drops the new interior glass piece and it too shatters on the floor. He runs outside in anger leaving me hanging convinced it is over. I thought for sure he wouldn’t be able to find another matching oven part for sale and I did not want to repeat the whole process again and I had already paid more than half the money up front once so to do it again would leave nothing left for him to finish the job. The anxiety, stress and frustration at this point was unbelievable. Luckily he had another generic middle piece that fit and didn’t need to match which ultimately did allow him to come through on his promise but it was a miserable couple of days. I know he tried to provide a 5 star experience and accidents happen so I don’t believe he deserves a terrible review but I just can’t say it was great. Initially I had thought I would be rehiring him to do future jobs and even though everything worked in the end and tI wouldn’t care to repeat the process.
