Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Are bathroom remodels worth it?

Remodeling your bathroom can lead to high personal satisfaction, as perhaps even a return on your investment when it comes time to sell your home. When you replace old and worn out surfaces with high-quality materials, it is almost guaranteed to improve the look and functionality of that space. A bathroom renovation can also improve your home’s curb appeal to future buyers and boost its overall value.

To determine if this project is worth the cost, start by getting free estimates from the best bathroom remodelers near you. And if you plan on selling your home, consult with your real estate expert to identify which remodeling projects you should prioritize.

What should I ask a bathroom remodeler before hiring?

It’s important to ensure that you and the contractor are on the same page before any work begins, so don’t be afraid to ask potential bathroom remodelers plenty of questions.

Start by reading the contractor’s reviews online. Ask to see examples of their past work — specifically, work that is similar to yours. If you need the bathroom remodel done by a certain date, ask the contractor if they will be able to complete the work by your deadline. And you should always ask how they handle payments.

Here are some examples of questions you can ask:

  • What materials do you recommend for my budget and overall vision?
  • How much are the materials and labor? What will my final cost be?
  • Do you have the proper license and insurance?
  • Can I see photos of past bathroom remodels you’ve worked on?
  • How long will it take to complete the remodel?
  • How do you handle payments?

How do I find and pick a contractor to remodel my bathroom?

Start by searching online to find a qualified bathroom remodeler near you. Take a few minutes to review the profiles of five or six contractors in your area. Pay attention to reviews from their past customers. How do they handle negative reviews? Are most of their customers satisfied with their work?

Next, look at photos of their past work to see who offers services that look the most like your project. You might also get inspiration for your bathtub, shower, backsplash, flooring, walls and backsplash. And before you hire someone, ask them whether they are licensed and insured in your state.

Lastly, to help ensure you pay a fair price, get free cost estimates from several contractors you’re considering.

Do I need a general contractor for a bathroom remodel?

For a small bathroom remodel, you may not need a general contractor. For example, if you simply need some plumbing or electrical work done in your bathroom, hiring a plumber or electrician should be sufficient.

However, if you’re tackling a large-scale remodel, a general contractor can coordinate a team of designers, painters and other specialty contractors to get the job done. Typically, the rule of thumb is that you should hire a general contractor if your project is large enough to require a building permit.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Joe and Brenda were very thorough and up front about the amount of effort with my bathroom remodel and the cost of the project. There were a number issues existing construction that Joe was able to correct during the project. He put in the extra effort to be sure that my remodel would not only be functional and look nice, but would remain water tight well into the future. They were good to work with and I would highly recommend them.

MR Remodeling Pro provided the best experience! They came over to give us an estimate on the project, we laid out a plan, and they walk us through step-by-step on what they provided and what we needed to do to prepare. They started the remodel a couple weeks later and were done with our small bathroom in 3 days. They even went above and beyond to help with a couple minor tasks that weren’t included in our project. They are incredibly responsive and strive to make sure that everyone is happy with the job at the end of the day! Highly recommend and will work with them again!!

Working with Jack was great - we are so glad that we found him for our job. He took our dingy basement floor that was plywood and leveled it and put down new flooring and did a full bathroom gut and remodel. Once he took demo'ed the existing bathroom, he realized that he could get us a lot more square footage on the layout, which really elevated the space. He did a great job with a new shower installation and tiles. He finished the job on time and on budget and was great at communicating and easy to work with. Would highly recommend!

Initially contractor said he wanted information about my bathroom remodeling project; however after I provided that information he did not respond back to me despite the fact that I contacted him multiple times. This contractor could have extended the professional courtesy of saying he was not interested in the project since he initially said he was interested in the project. He did not. He was very unprofessional.

We had an amazing time working with Bundled Services. We had talked to a bunch of difficult contractors prior to finding them, so working with Shannon and her team was like a breath of fresh air. From the very beginning, Shannon was a clear communicator, professional, and helpful. She helped us to pick out the best tile for our bathroom remodel, kept us up to date on progress, and checked in regularly. Her team was great to work with and have around the house. They finished the job on time and on budget, even coming back on a Saturday after we added one last request. For anyone navigating home repairs and remodels, we would highly recommend Bundled Services!

Shower was not running hot water and toilet was leaking. Shower valves/pipes were replaced including repairing drywall and repainting. Toilet was replaced. All scheduled quickly and completed according to schedule. No delays! Also, received some suggestions on an entire bathroom remodel. But after understanding my situation, recommended doing the less expensive job even though less revenue to company. Finally, owner of the company actually does the work so received even better service and quality.

Beware! Especially if you don't know anything about remodeling/construction-this guy will skip out on things in the contract and hide it before you even realize it! Also, what kind of contractor expects the customer to get rid of the garbage??? He left all of the garbage from the bathroom demolition in my backyard so my husband had to waste time and money renting a pickup and taking it to a disposal place. ZERO stars! To counter your very professional reply-if I did not give you deposit then why did you start work on my bathroom-oh yeah because I did give you the deposit! Stop lying! I feel bad for the many working class families you have duped and will continue to dupe.

Perdomo Construction did an amazing job with our bathroom remodel. They completed the job in less time than expected, which was awesome! Julio, was very responsive to my texts and messages regarding product information. We worked together to find a similar item if something was out of stock. He had great ideas and understood exactly what I was going for. His workers were punctual, clean, and hard working. I will definitely hire them again for future projects! We are so happy with how everything turned out! :)

We hired Ram Renovation & Design to completely gut and remodel our bathroom. They were efficient and compliant with requirements from our condo building and had all necessary insurance. They promptly informed us of any changes in work plans and truly understood our vision for design. They even came back to address a small leak after our project was finished to resolve the issue! We were so happy with their work we even had them do back splashes in our kitchen and bar area. Great value for the work and easy to work with guys!

Andrei and his partner were wonderful. We had an outdated, boring, uninspired bathroom that they turned into a beautiful spa-like retreat. Andrei’s design ideas were terrific and the result was exactly what we hoped it would be. I had many friends who’d had bathroom remodels done to expect that it would cost twice as much as budgeted and would take twice as long as scheduled. We had a completely different experience. Andrei walked us through each element of the work and explained exactly what he would do and how much it would cost. And his estimates were spot on. When there were unexpected issues that arose, Andrei notified us, recommended options and provided very helpful advice. The work was done flawlessly and ahead of schedule. He and his partner were friendly, respectful, and extremely neat. They were an absolutely pleasure to work with and delivered a beautiful end result. I would highly recommend them. There’s a reason Andrei has so many positive reviews on this site – he has earned them! You will not be disappointed!

We had Alan remodel both of our bathrooms in our very old (over 75 years old) home. From the beginning, he was very professional and easy to coordinate with. He gave a thorough assessment, took all the necessary measurements and followed up to provide a detailed quote, which is more than I can say for the other people who came out to quote the job. Throughout the entire process, Alan went above and beyond and was transparent in sharing everything he needed to do and the feedback he needed from us. He provided us plenty of options to respect our budget and preferences and was an incredibly hard worker. Alan is extremely trustworthy, honest and very skilled. We could not have been happier with the results and would hire him again and again.

If I could write a five page review about Horatiu I would. We had a few really absurd quotes to remodel our bathroom and finally I came on thumbtack and Horatiu responded. He came out two days later and viewed the project and gave us an estimate. We had a lot of weird issues of products getting cancelled and not show up (stuff we ordered) and he always handled it with such professionalism and grace. He even went with us to menards to find a new vanity since our original one didn’t show up. He always showed up on time .. he cleaned up behind himself .. he tried to not track in dirt all over our main room. We can’t wait to work with him again and have him do several more projects in our fixer upper home. We adore him. If you don’t hire him it’s your loss.
