What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

I've been going through cycles of setting up a gym schedule for myself and then failing to follow it. I've run through a few personal trainers in the past year or so, and can honestly say Dima changed the way I look at fitness. It was hard to motivate myself before, and I wasn't seeing improvement. Dima taught me about the whole fitness lifestyle, from plannjng my diet to getting the perfect form in a deadlift. I've seen more results in my 12 weeks with Dima than I did in a year at my old gym. And, going to the gym is fun for me now because of Dima's relentlessly positive, goal-oriented training style. Thank you, Dima, for giving me the personal training experience I always wanted.

Working with Matt has been great. Not only is he a trainer who knows his stuff, he is very personable. He didn't just want to train but wanted to understand my goals and where I wanted to be in 'x' amount of months. I definitely recommend Matt to anyone who is looking for a trainer and doesn't want to have to join a gym to do so. Matts flexibility and options to work out has definitely helped make training even easier!

Ray's training sessions are affordable and great value. He's open to tailoring his workout program to your goals and needs. He focuses on form, technique and safety during all the exercises and will not unnecessarily push you if he thinks there's any chance of injury or soreness later. He is patient in answering questions and providing feedback based on his personal power lifting and training experience. Ray and the other folks at the gym are very friendly. The gym is clean, well maintained and follows all COVID safety guidelines. Really glad to have found Ray on Thumbtack, I would highly recommend working with him for achieving your health and fitness goals!

Training with Cat has been awesome - it's been a few classes but I'm making steady progress. Her sessions are a good mix of short routines that repeat so you build 'muscle memory' and improve as well as new routines that help keeps it interesting. And her traveling to my apt gym makes it so much easier for me to stick to an exercise routine without any excuses! Well, I can keep going... Thank you, Cat!

Dima’s an excellent trainer. He’s exceptional at helping you with your form as well as providing feedback on how to improve. He’s also helped me work though injuries and still find ways to attain my fitness goals. Before I met Dima I would have taken time off the gym with an injury but I now feel confident to keep going and do different exercises that avoid those muscle groups as well as doing mobility exercises to improve my flexibility. Also Dima’s extremely committed as a trainer with frequently checking in how my workouts are going as well as providing me a concrete workout plan. This communication is invaluable and it helps me think about how to change my program based on injuries or how my body is feeling. I would highly recommend Dima to anyone who’s looking for a committed and passionate personal trainer who helps you work to your fitness goals safely and quickly

I have been training with Dima for about 3 months. My goals were fat loss and muscle gain. Before we began, Dima took time to go over the plan and explain how I should approach both the goals. He is very patient and I love that he explains how each exercise works and the correct way to do it. He keeps a record of your progress and that's a great motivator to be on track. In the past I somehow found ways to avoid going to the gym, but now look forward to a workout. I am definitely stronger than before and also see fat loss along the way. Eager to see how I progress over long term!!
