Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
5 Steps to Hiring an Interior Painter
  1. 1. Evaluate experts

Ask pros for references who will allow you to visit their homes and see the painters' work, if possible. This helps you get a better idea of the pros' capabilities before you hire one.

  2. 2. Test for lead

This is important if your home was built before 1978. If the test comes back positive, discuss removal options with your prospective painters.

  3. 3. Get a contract

This contract should also outline the products your pro will be using. If you need help choosing a paint, your pro can explain what works best in certain areas of your home.

  4. 4. Prepare walls

Take some time a few days before the painting in scheduled to happen, make any necessary repairs, and perform a thorough cleaning. Patch drywall that has holes in it and scrub down dirty walls.

  5. 5. Move furniture

Unless your contract specifies that your painter will move heavy furniture and other decor away from or off the walls, move it to another room or to the center of the room before the pro arrives.
