Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a light fixture?

If you want to have a light fixture installed, the cost will likely be between $90 to $250 per fixture. The actual cost will depend on a number of factors, the first of which is the professional you hire. To find out how much you can expect to spend, contact several lighting installation professionals near you and ask for free estimates.

The type of fixture can also impact costs. For example, traditional ceiling mounts are usually less expensive than recessed lighting. The number of lights that need to be installed is another cost factor.

Do you need an electrician to install a light fixture?

Whether you need to hire a lighting installation service or an electrician to install a light fixture depends on the type of fixture, the complexity of your electrical wiring, and most of all, your experience and comfort. Depending on the location of the fixture, you may need to run wiring and install switches. If you don’t have any previous electrical experience, it’s quite possible to make a mistake that could create a hazard. However, if you know what you’re doing, installing a light fixture is fairly trivial.

How do you install a ceiling light fixture?

Some of the steps involved in installing a ceiling or hanging light fixture including removing the old fixture, inspecting your wiring, turning off the power at the breaker box, connecting wires and attaching the fixture. Some of the tools, equipment and materials you might need include a step ladder, screwdrivers, screws, wire strippers, wire connectors, a power drill, pliers or more.

If you don’t have the necessary equipment or don’t feel comfortable installing your ceiling light on your own, contact a lighting professional instead.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Bill rewired my new bathroom vent/light after I tried to do it myself and totally messed things up (yup, bad idea). I'll definitely use him again in the future. Thanks Bill!

Installed bath fan with heat and light. Nice person to work with in house. They worked straight thru the job taking very little time off. The job went as planned. Very happy with his service. Kept to the price agreed.

Paul did a great job to repair a ceiling power outlet/light. He was very professional and did a high quality job. It is hard to find such an honest and hardworking electrician nowadays who really wants to do right things at all the time. Thanks.

Paul was great to work with and great at explaining things to us. We hired him to install a ceiling fan and another light. He showed us what we were doing wrong and suggested different materials. We would hire Paul again!

Highest quality work, very professional and very reasonably priced. My job ended up being more complicated (ie water pipe was in way of where wall sconce needed to be), but E&K went above and beyond to create alternatives so light could be placed where intended. Very happy with work, will definitely call again and highly recommend.

The quality of work that Ray and team does is very good, but they are very busy for household projects, and tend to focus on commercial projects. If you do decide to go with them, please try to get a firm commitment on the work timing, because Ray had to leave our household project (removal and installation of around 15 light fixtures, incl. high ceiling fans and chandeliers) in the middle. He is ethical, however, as he refunded me for work not done.

I'm going to chalk this first impression up as a fluke and just unfortunate events. On the day of the job I guess one of the workers called out so our electrician was on his own. The end result was great and the electrician was polite. My biggest concern was he didn't put up drop clothes by default and he was going to drill holes in the ceiling. We noticed this and then put sheet down ourselves. The quote was much lower than the other quotes I got and the results of the installed lighting were great. I think the concerns I had were mainly due to the guy having to do the job of two people and being rushed to get it done within a day.
