Eduardo was very communicative during the process, was punctual and worked around my schedule. His rates are very reasonable. I had Eduardo assemble a hard top gazebo, which weighs almost 320lbs. He worked hard and much quicker than I thought possible. I offered to help with the lifting part but he did it all except for that. The results are amazing. I highly recommend Eduardo for all your handyman needs. He also fixed a troublesome toilet roll holder.

We wanted to start off saying that we love Thumbtack. We hired Tim because of the wonderful reviews that he had and he was so quick to get back to us on a proposal. He was very fixable with his schedule and ours. We were amazed that he offered to come out New Year's Day to patch up/fix our dry walling in our up stairs bathroom. Tim arrived in a timely manner and immediately started tackling the job. Another thing that was so touching about hiring him is he brought his wife along to watch him work because he had a busy schedule the next couple of days and wouldn't get to spend much time with her. We both enjoyed their company as he worked on the bathroom. He actually taught my husband how to patch dry walling, which was very nice because we are getting our house ready to sale. He finished the bathroom project in a few hours and we were very happy with the results. We will definitely hire Tim in the future and recommend him to anyone that needs an all around handyman.

Patrick installed a lattice shed under my porch and did an amazing job. His work was so good my neighbors hired him to do work at their house while he was here. His price was very fair and he was very gracious and kind to my wife and kids even bringing the kids a balloon one day. I have been disappointed in the past by handyman but I will definitely be using Patrick again.

Where do I start? Matthew was amazing! If you have needs for a handyman, you have found one. From responsiveness to punctuality to expertise of his craft; he does it all. This guy is amazing. He asks questions and genuinely wants to please the customer. "The customer is always right" is his motto. Trust me he treats your ideas as if it's the Holy Grail of his project and even stays later to make sure you are pleased with his work. He cleaned up after the work was done making sure to leave my place as neat as possible. Pricing was more than reasonable for the amount of work that he did. So a big thank you to Matthew for making my apartment look fabulous and just being overall a great guy during the whole process. CHOOSE HIM!!!

I needed to dispose of an old vacuum cleaner, a dismantled shelf, and some old gardening/landscaping materials. JJ Handyman Services came and hauled away the items the same day that I made my initial request. It feels great having a decluttered space. To my surprise, he actually did a great job with all the plumbing issues at my house. I think he was fair with his prices as well. Very responsive, punctual and prompt on getting the work done. I had work done a good two weeks ago, and so far everything is great. Would definitely hire again. In fact, have more work lined up for him already. Plus, he followed up on his own on one of the issues we're currently working on. Definitely worth giving him a chance if this is your first time and you're looking for a plumber\handyman.

Mike's Drywall Service did an excellent job! Mike, his father, and his mom were very honest and straightforward people. Mike's father got the job done quickly, was very clean and tidy, and knew what he was doing. If you hire Mike's Drywall Service you will not be disappointed. My ceiling had a manufacture ceiling design in the basement, as well as in the Kitchen. Mike was able to texture the ceiling after cutting out damaged drywall from a leak, replacing it with new drywall, priming the areas that were stain, which did not get cut out, painting, and texturing both ceilings. Both ceilings had a different design, and Mike was able to blend the designs in with the rest of the ceiling after doing the repairs. I appreciate their service. Now a days it is hard to find an honest, reliable company, but you will find it in Mike's Drywall Service. :)

Being a single woman you don’t know who to trust. From the time he walked in the door, I could see by how he presented himself in a respectful manner, that he respected my home. He offered to put covers on his shoes whereby he would not track dirt from the outside on my carpet. That morning I had left massages for several companies, who never returned my phone call. EGH services was the only company who responded in a timely manner, and provided excellent service, answering questions that I had. I would recommend and use EGH services, when I have other projects that I need help with.

I was very happy with work done by Kelvin from Gifted Hands. He was punctual and professional. He finished my fence repair work along with another drywall repair job. For both cases, he gave me his options, pros and cons of each and he also listened to my needs and requirement. He is very neat in his work as well. I'd highly recommend him for any handyman projects.

Cristian and Luis were responsive, reliable and hard-working. I had to have a bathroom remodel finished very quickly and they were able to start immediately and completed quickly. Also, the estimate was very reasonable. I had asked for some extra work and they were accommodating and when the total bill came, they were spot on with the actual cost compared to the estimate and the extra work added to the bill was very fair. It’s difficult to find a good dependable handyman that you feel comfortable working with, and I found this in C&L. I already have other projects with which, I will be asking for their services. The work they did for me was drywall and tiling of floor and walls of a full bathroom and extensive drywall repairs in other areas of the home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
