Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
7 Steps to Shower or Tub Installation
  1. 1. Choose your contractor

Choose from contractors who are licensed and carry liability insurance. Select your contractor based on best price, expertise, availability and your level of comfort.

  2. 2. Share your plan

Ensure that the contractor understands your vision for the bathroom and select a timetable for installation. Remember that many projects require quick completion to ensure bonding and sealing.

  3. 3. Choose your materials

Choose the type and style of shower or bathtub and flooring or wall treatment you want. Work with the pro to select materials that are compatible with your home and usage.

  4. 4. Be sure to waterproof

Choose the type of waterproofing to install below the shower or bathtub. Choices include sheet materials, roll-on materials and bonding materials that are placed below tile.

  5. 5. Agree on disposal of old materials

Make sure the contractor brings enough help to remove all of the old bathroom fixtures that will be replaced. There is often an extra charge for removal of debris.

  6. 6. Seal everything

Work with the contractor to ensure that all bonded areas are sealed with silicone caulk. Using 100 percent silicone caulk prevents mold from growing around edging or corners.

  7. 7. Test before signing

Allow all areas to dry thoroughly before testing with water. Ensure that the contractor makes all changes before completing the job. Do not sign off on work until it is tested for leaks.
