Planning checklist

Prepare for success by getting started now.
8 months ahead: Make decisions
  • Create a list of the end goals you have in hiring a videographer.
  • Think about how long you want this person present on your big day and the type of shots you want to capture.
6–8 months ahead: Research options
  • Start learning more about videographers in your area. Read reviews from past customers.
  • Watch sample clips of productions to get a clear idea of style. Some videographers have cinematic styles or a documentary feel.
6 months ahead: Conduct interviews
  • Make appointments to meet with several videographers in your area, and come prepared with questions.
  • Ask the videographer to meet with your photographer. They need to meet one another beforehand to come up with a plan.
  • Ask the videographer if he or she adds music to the final product. Music adds another dimension to wedding videos.
  • Check out the equipment the videographer uses. High-end equipment provides the best-looking shots, so it’s worth the extra cost.
  • Inquire about the number of weddings the videographer has on your wedding day. You want the videographer’s full attention.
5–6 months ahead: Hire your pro
  • Choose a package, if your desired videographer offers them.
  • Go over the editing process with the videographer. If you want high-quality video, you need a skilled digital editor.
  • Draw up a contract that includes payment terms and outlines what duties the videographer performs on your wedding day.
  • Specify how long a videographer has to deliver the final edited movies.
3–4 months ahead: Introduce
  • Help your photographer and videographer make contact so they can begin planning their separate roles at your wedding.
  • Introduce your videographer and coordinator if you have one so they can firm up day-of plans.
1 month ahead: Give details
  • Provide an emergency contact number and the address for your venue so your videographer can check out the space beforehand.
2–3 days ahead: Confirm
  • Verify that your videographer has the location down and see if he or she needs anything else from you.
The day of: Enjoy and pay
  • Have fun! Your videographer may request partial payment at this time, so prepare your coordinator to provide a check.
