Mike was a Christmas Miracle! I was in need of a new living room floor a few weeks before Christmas. I contacted Mike through thumbtack and he was at my house the next day with a plan. He and his guys returned 3 days later, early Friday morning, to tear out my damaged carpet, install new hardwoods, sanded the adjoining kitchen and hall wood floor, and stained new and existing hardwoods. They worked until nearly midnight the first night and continued to work hard all weekend until we returned home Sunday night. The floors were exactly what I asked for and the new hardwood floor flows into the existing hardwood. Two months later I can comfortably say that Mike and his crew are honest and amazing! I also had Mike repair some walls and his guy did a great job! We can’t wait to hire Mike for our new project.

Eddy refinished 745 square feet of hardwood floors for me. He was very responsive when I called him. In fact, most of the time if he did not answer within 3-5 rings, he called me back while I was leaving him a voice message on his mobile phone. Eddy was professional, congenial, and reasonable along with performing the work with his crew of two refinishers. They did a wonderful job of avoiding having the sawdust from sanding the hardwood floors from becoming airborne, but they did tape plastic barriers outside the areas being sanded. Would I recommend Eddy to others? Absolutely! He even took the time to help me jump my car's battery since my battery had not held a good charge due to the cold weather. Eddy also installs hardwood floors. He has several crews that do installation and two that do refinishing.

The door looks amazing and Marcus had a difficult job getting through my cinderblock and brick walls. He did a fantastic job making sure the floor and the doorjam were flush. Now all I have to do is paint the area outside when the weather warms up. I would use him again especially if I decide to replace my windows.

My flooring estimate was the lowest in town (that I found) , and yet the quality and timeliness of the job was superior! Love my newly refinished hardwoods!

My wife and I really liked Working with TMC., they were professional, quick, responsive and so easy to work with. We had some storm damage and needed drywall replaced and a finished basement refinished and painted. We used this as an opurtinity to update the colors and brighten up the space but needed some help deciding on colors. We are so happy with how things look! Thanks TMC!

We have used Limas flooring for all of our hardwood floor needs. They originally installed hardwoods for our build job of our home and since we have added hardwoods to our bedroom and study. We were totally pleased on all occasions. The flooring looks as though they were all put in at the same time. We are having them back for a third time to round out our first floor to all hardwoods. Easy to work with and they will always make things right.

Don Fotheringhame from 221 construction came personally to discuss the project I had in mind. I Couldn't be happier with the professionalism, or results that Don provided. Easy to reach, affordable prices, prompt, and clean. I would call with any renovation, or construction need and certainly recommend to any one. I have a concrete floor in my basement that isn't level, which I need for a workspace. After going over the pro's and con's of multiple options I decided to have 221 Construction build a raised wood floor. I thank you for a result that goes beyond my expectations.

Had Speakman Flooring install new carpet remnants in our townhouse. Estimate was spot on for removal of old carpet and installation of remnants in living room, stairs and landing between upstairs bedrooms. Arrived on time, was professional and courteous. Moved furniture for us. Ended up short carpet, Luke was able to match carpet at reasonable price & was able to pickup w/out loosing to much time. Did a great job wrapping carpet over outside of steps & landing. Will definitely use again for our flooring needs.

I am extremely happy with the job McFarland Floors just completed for me. They were able to match my existing hardwood floors and blend them seamlessly. They are so very nice, professional, knowledgeable, friendly, punctual and pleasant. They took special care to minimize dust and even tidied up after they finished. They were also able to match my baseboards with the new trim. Everything came out perfectly and we will definitely use them again for future jobs. I would highly recommend!

AJ and his brother, Jemere, installed the laminate floor for our living and bed rooms and we love it. They were hard-working people with strong work ethic, paid attention to detail and spent extra time to make sure our floor looks beautiful. The price was fair and communication was great from the time we setup to the day of appointment. We already have other project lines up for them and will absolutely recommend family and friends that need the services that they can provide.

Vaz helped us restore our hardwood floors back to new after we’d gotten some deep scratches in a few prominent areas. We didn’t know if it was possible, but he was able to color match our stain and seal so that the areas blend perfectly with the rest of the flooring. He was punctual, considerate of our time, communicative with schedule, and quickly made our flooring look new again! Thanks Vaz!!

Ed coated our garage floors and installed cabinetry and slat wall. Super nice guy! Easy to work with and the garages look great. He went the extra mile to get the job done on time. Just wish I could pay him to put all our stuff away in the cabinets for us!

I don't have anything but great things to say about this company. Mike & his guys did everything true professionals would when it came to our carpet. He showed up when he said he would, Beat his own estimate by $75 on the labor & Saved us HUGE on pad (OVER HALF OF NFM!). From the beginning phase of planning down to the cleanup after the install they were superb. I dread hiring people for work at our home, Mostly because I don't know if I'm getting a decent deal or not and hate being duped into something i don't need But Mike was different, He was not at all pushy and only offered solutions that saved us time or money which was a pleasant relief. Not only that but he was cheaper than the other 3 bids we received and even took money off the final bill (additional tax he charged in the original estimate)...WHAT contractor would point out his mistake and take a loss when we wouldn't have known the wiser....Kimmel carpets!! They were overall A+ with my home and wallet. I wouldn't think twice about having mike or his crew back to do more work in the future and look at my floors, Their fabulous!

We had rented out our previous home for fourteen years. It had gotten very run down during that time. Mark installed all new LED light fixtures, new doors, new flooring, new fencing, a new front porch, new landscaping, new second deck, and a host of other repairs. We sold it for above asking price. Mark's a great guy with a tremendous work ethic and commitment to his customers. I'm now utilizing him with reoairs on my present home as well.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
