Working with Steve was great. He managed to squeeze me in the same day I talked to him about replacing a broken window. His price was also a lot more reasonable than some of the other big name companies I called for a quote. Steve was very professional, and I would gladly work with him again.

The opportunity to move to an easier location came during a time of great stress. Josh assured me from the beginning that he was here to make my life easier and that's what he and his company did.I have moved 6 times in the past 10 years, mostly for work. I've worked with 5 different moving companies during that time. Courtesy Movers is the best. Josh Curtis, Owner, assured me from the beginning that his job was to make my life easier. He was right. His team showed up on time, all with great attitudes and smiles, and proceeded to take control and make me feel at ease. They explained fully how they operate and did a full walk-through of both locations before beginning. They explained how they would proceed throughout the move, asked questions when needed, and gave me the opportunity to rest. Josh interviewed me on how much I love the sun through my windows and gave insight on how to position my furniture for best placement. I shed tears of joy at the ease and the care that these fine young men showed me. It was a tremendous experience. I hope I don't have to move again for awhile but if I do - Josh and his team at Courtesy Movers will be hired. They have earned a customer for life.

We used Bellhops for some furniture moving and a small local move, and I was so impressed with the young men (Rhys and Cameron) that helped us! They were early, incredibly professional & respectful, quick but cautious of our walls & other furniture, and did the job as expected. I would highly recommend them and plan to use Bellhops again with our next move.

The handyman was a little late arriving, but he did a good job and even did another small job because the main project was finished in a timely manner.

Wow! Blown away by this team. I was ready to pay more for a regular moving company when I found Piano Solution. They were less expensive and had the right equipment for the job. They were prompt and professional. Got me set-up and tuned the piano. Don't mess with other movers or anything for your pianos. These guys can move and tune your piano in one go.

I contacted Haze Services on Monday. They were able to come out on Tuesday. I needed somebody to get the job done and they responded promptly. They did a great job. They worked so hard. It seemed like so much work for such a small amount of money. They never got frustrated or annoyed. They had such great personalities and were very hard working but very laid back young men. I would be upset if I worked for 2 hours non stop in hot temperatures doing hard physical activity and only charged a small amount. Most of the quotes I got were twice the amount as Haze Services. I got a good deal. These guys were great! I would definitely recommend them.

I bought a 5 hour cleaning service gift certificate for Christmas, for my mother-in-law to help when she was moving out of her house. Rhonda went above and beyond to help get the certificate before Christmas, and helped me figure out how much cleaning time to buy her. She gave me an honest assessment, and didn't just say a certain time just in order to get more money. When my mother-in-law finally got set to move and got a hold of Rhonda, she was SO accommodating, and came the day that my MIL needed her too, even though my MIL was only able to give her about a weeks notice. Rhonda was on time, she was VERY professional, and my MIL said that she was extremely patient with them, as they were still moving some things and were getting in her way while she was attempting to clean. On top of everything else, my MIL said she did an exceptional job on the house and cleaned more thoroughly than she expected. Over all, Rhonda was a wonderful person, very professional, did a great job, and is also SO nice! I would recommend her services to absolutely anyone I know. Thank you Rhonda!

We needed a full-house cleaning & needed it fast. Sight unseen, Special Touch Care gave us a very reasonable bid. Despite the house being much larger than expected, they worked hard to get to all the details. And they came prepared with green cleaning products as requested. They were kind, respectful & good at what they do. Not quite the "deep clean" I'd expected, I realize that that was a lot to ask with almost no notice, a very reasonable bid & a larger home than anticipated. We would happily hire them again.

Jesse and Mike were a dynamic duo! Jesse returned my call the same day, gave me an honest, fair quote, and was very professional. The guys actually finished under quote time. They loaded our 3BR townhome securely within 2 hours, completing the entire job in under 5 hours. (45 min travel to new home) Jesse and Mike took care of our belongings as though they were theirs. They were friendly and personable, even fielding questions from our inquisitive 6 yr old son. We added some gratuity, which was well-deserved! They helped make our move stress-free and light-hearted. It was so nice to talk to a small business, after trying to get through to many of he bigger companies, who's prices rose because of a short notice move date (just over a week). Not so with this company. Thank you, KC Movers! First class business!!!!

They came out 3 hours after I called them and turned an hour long move into about 20 minutes. I had a washer and dryer that had to fit through small spaces and they moved it quickly and took extra care not to damage my equipment or my homes. Their work is quality and they were more affordable than anyone in the metro. The person who schedules, Ashley, is also very responsive, friendly, and knowledgeable. It was a fantastic experience.

Happy Hour Moving was amazing! The owner walked through my house and said he could complete the move in 3 hours and they finished at my new house in 3 hours and 15 min in 95 degree heat (also they break down the final hour so we did not pay for 4 hours)! The movers are friendly and took amazing care of my belongings. I told them not to worry about moving boxes into rooms. But at the end of the move, I walked into my baby's room and noticed that all of her boxes were in there. I thanked the owner and he told me he wanted us to be able to get her set up quickly after a long day. It was so helpful to be able to find all of her stuff and get her settled in. They were extremely thoughtful and kind.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
