Right from Rogelio's very timely response after my initial inquiry through completion of the landscaping work, I was impressed. He approached the job of Spring cleanup and mulching meticulously. As a result he attended to little details that others might not have bothered with or just dismissed as not being important. Because he was unable to do all the work at one time, he kept me informed so I knew what to expect and when. He was reliable, showed up when he said he would and was thoughtful not to inconvenience me. It turned out he he was able to complete the work earlier than originally anticipated. He was extremely pleasant, clearly has a passion for his work, has a good eye for what plantings work where, brought high quality planting material, and is proud of his work. His price was fair and I would definitely hire him again.

Terry does excellent work, he is careful of your trees and plants and is great to let you know if he will be delayed due to weather or whatever. Best mowing service I have ever used.

Chris and his team were one of my first responses on Thumbtack. The yard looks great. He's planted flowers for me with no mess or cleanup on my part. It's a great value and I have peace of mind that my yard work is in capable hands. I look forward to continued work with the team as my landscape design becomes reality.

Front yard clean up and landscaping. I found Chad Hesler through Thumbtack. When I called him and left a message, he promptly responded, and within a day, he was taking measure of the overgrown and ill-planned mess that was my front yard. He immediately had a vision of how to create a wholistic, low-maintenance landscape. This involved grinding out stumps, removing ivy, pokeweed, raspberry vines, and randomly planted shrubs and trees. He and his team created a beautiful landscape stone frame, then filled it with hardy Drift roses, dwarf Alberta spruces, hostas, oriental lillies and more. All of the blockwork and landscaping are in complete harmony with our house. It's beautiful. He and his team are friendly, creative, communicative and dependable. Next up: pressure washing and backyard landscaping!!

Of all the mowing services I heard from, JR'S Lawn Service impressed me most. My neighbor had a lawn service I used last year but when he stopped to take a job at the Ford plant, I wasn't sure where to turn. Then I remembered finding a great pressure washer service on Thumbtack, so searched for lawn services. JR's worked to fit my yard into their schedule as soon as possible and did an absolutely beautiful job. The yard was mowed & trimmed and looked so nice when I came home from work. Their pricing is fair and I could not be happier. I definitely recommend JR'S Lawn Service!

Excellent work! I have used Justin Lynch and his services numerous times (approximately 40 hours of work) and been highly satisfied EVERY time. He has done the following types of jobs for me: spreading truckloads and truckloads of mulch, patching concrete to fix a dog run fence post, pruning every tree in my yard, digging up and then transplanting irises and ferns, clearing out beds, trimming deadwood from flowers, getting rid of invasive honeysuckle, leaf blowing and mulching. He has done enough work for me that I feel comfortable with leaving him a list or a text with photos as to the jobs I want done. Yes, I believe him to be that trustworthy. I get home and am always pleased with the results and how much he was able to get done in the amount of time. An added benefit is he is truly a really nice guy to work with. I've worked alongside him. I love my yard and I love to work in it, but I do not always have the time to do all the things I want to do. He helps tremendously. Justin Lynch has a forestry background; he's educated about plants, trees and soil. I trust him. He's knowledgeable. I have recommended Justin Lynch to my neighbors and would recommend him to anyone who needs a hard worker.

The outdoor feature they created is lovely, Fits right into the landscape and looks very natural. They took care of it for the first 6 months and just recently planted some aquatic plants. They were efficient and completed the job on time, they cleaned up after the installation and in my opinion did a beautiful job.

He was quick to respond and set up a time to provide an accurate estimate for my tree removal. He came the very next day (even in a light rain/mist which ended in light snow) to complete the job. It went very well with absolutely no problems. He was insured and experienced! My 35+ foot high pine tree and all its needles and cones was completely gone and cleaned up by the end of the day for the price quoted!! We will definitely be using his services again and highly recommend him!!

We had two holly trees in our front yard that were planted so close by the previous owner that they were eating our house. One even had power lines going through it. Tim’s Contracting did a wonderful job removing these trees. The price was amazing and the service even more so. The day after I received my quote, they were there to do the job, and everything looked great afterwards. They even cleaned up the remainder of a tree in my backyard. This is a great company, and I would recommend them to anyone. They’re even coming back next week to remove our stumps. Five-star all around!

We hired Brad and his crew to complete a full yard and landscape overhaul and we couldn't be happier with the results. He is very knowledgable about what's going to work where and since I'm a visual person he even provided me with a drawing and sample plants. Brad and his crew removed unwanted plants, installed new ones, trimmed, mulch, edged the beds, the whole deal! We've even scheduled more services for the front yard next spring with Brad and have hired him to take over all our lawn care. Very impressed.

Ed has done numerous projects for us. His attention to detail, professionalism and craftsmanship are the highest of anyone we’ve ever had. Each project was completed in timely manner, excellent quality down to the details of making sure it was done right and things are left clean and tidy afterwards. Two of the numerous projects are pictured. Deck flower boxes, that were original to the house, needed to be redone after winter storms last year. We had some plants in them that we didn’t want to loose, so he came out quickly to get things rebuilt. He took down the old ones, built more secure and substantial ones and extended them, at our request. Pictures are from initial winter install and later in the summer. Another project was kitchen tile backsplash. Did a great job cutting around details and outlets, and the grouting and cleaning. Very pleased with finished projects. Thankfully he has also been willing to tackle small projects or needs with same level of enthusiasm and professionalism too when we’ve needed. We’ve felt he always quotes and charges a fair price for the projects. Never any hidden surprises. Highly recommend without reservations.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
