They did a kitchen and dining room renovation job for us, including Sheetrock, painting, and flooring. I never felt like I had strangers in my home. We were very pleased with their courteous employees. Jay seemed very knowledgable, and made the job much easier than I thought it would be. I am looking forward to hiring them for my upcoming bathroom renovations.

The job consisted of my outside unit not coming on. He gave me a few tips before coming out,to see if it was a diy type of thing. He came out fixed a few air leaks and fixed electrical wiring. Then he came back the next day and put a drain for my drip pan and sealed it.

I hired Thomas to re-tile the floor in a rental I own. He needed to replace a good portion of the sub floor as well. He was very professional and the completed project came out very nice. I would definitely recommend him.

I am looking forward to amending this review if we can get our renovation finished. The biggest problem started when the 3rd floor addition was not tarped properly and it rained on first floor which is our living and dining room. So, we had to completely clear those rooms out. Which has led to us only being able to live in two rooms of our house. They treated their mess up like another part of the renovation and they STILL have not replaced the floors NOR hooked up the AC to the be other side of the house. My kitchen is literally Hell’s Kitchen. With two small kids, who both finish school this week, I don’t think I have to tell you how hard it is to not have even the part of the house that WAS supposed to be functional throughout the renovation working. See photos. Also, my yard is still a mess. Full of rusty nails and a rusty saw blade and the dumpster that hasn’t been taken away yet. So can’t send the kids outside. Bill didn’t include the windows as part of our estimate - so be aware of that. I find that fascinating. He also is claiming not to “remember” the original plans to demolish the stairs and rebuild them - a $5000 part of the renovation - even after haggling with us about windows - he said “he doesn’t remember” that the stairs were part of the estimate. I would like that off the top of the price. So- I sincerely look forward to amending this review if they can get their stuff together and finish this up. As a counter to the negativity - the upstairs work is beautiful.

This is one of those times where I would I give 6 STARS. Mr. Clark WILL BE HIRED AGAIN, by me and any one I know needing his skills and expertise. After a brief text to Curtis for two Bathroom ventilation installations, not only did Curtis keep his word and actually show up, he also gave a very fair & reasonable quote. Actually he show up and was here super early, AWESOME, making what I needed done, completed faster. Curtis also double checked and completed ALL the required work and was super helpful on other issues I wanted to get resolved around the house and he actually cleaned up after himself without me having to say anything to him about that. Not only would I hire him again, I am hiring him right now as I type this to redo and update my Electrical outlet in the kitchen, living room and bedrooms and also to update 2 of my outside lights. I also will be using his services to re-enforce the doors and redo any wood rot at the bottom of them, possible even behind one of my gutter and redo my carpet or put in flooring in the Loft area. Take notes Louisiana, this is how a business is supposed to be done every time. Skilled, quick, massively professional and takes pride in his work and it shows. THANK YOU CURTIS.

Mr. Rafael recently laid tile floor down for my foyer. He did an amazing job. All of the tiles are level and he was super fast. He is about to repair my kitchen tile that was laid down incorrectly by a different contractor. I am so excited and cannot wait to see my new kitchen floors. I will definitely hire him for additional projects. He is also very personable and explains things so that I can understand.

We hired SEC HomeRemodeling to repair and remodel our bathroom floor and shower surround. The subfloor had rotted away under our existing 50 year old tile floor in our sole bathroom. Paul and Todd fixed the structural problems under our floor (repairing/adding floor joists, installing new subfloor) and now we have a beautiful, solid porcelain tile floor. They also remodelled our tile shower surround and installed a new tub and bronze shower hardware. We love our new bathroom. You can see the handmade quality work and the attention to detail that Paul and Todd put into our project. Our remodel came in on budget and was completed a few days earlier than the estimated time. We put our trust in this company, and they respected that trust. Overall, we had a great experience with SEC Home Remodelling, and we will use them for future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
