Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

My roof started leaking during Zeta, so I reached out to Bob during the storm. He was out at my house less than 24 hours later. He didn’t sell me anything I didn’t need, and had my roof patched within a couple of days.

Jose did a great job. My roof looks amazing and he did it very timely and the clean up was great. I would highly recommend him. His price was fair for the roof and I will pass his contact information on to my family and friends. He had a large staff and they got the job done professionally.

Jason was very personable, professional and knowledgeable concerning his work. He quickly knew what was causing the leak in my roof and repaired it. He took pictures and showed me and also explained to me everything he did. The job was reasonably priced. I was very well pleased and will refer him to anyone who's having roof problems.

I DID NOT HIRE HIM. Received estimate, but did not hire HIM. YET, he invoiced me for payment through Pay Pal. He won't remove the invoice and charge. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I did not sign anything. He hounded me with persistent phone calls when I told him I hired another roofer for the job. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. . I went with another more trustworthy but expensive company. After discussing with Frederick Haywood his roofing practices he told me ..... "we leave felt on if it looks good" ....and this is why I did not let him do my roof. It is never ok to leave felt on a roof without checking the underlying sheathing. You may get a 'finished' looking roof, but you will have a leak sooner than later. Mr. Haywood was very disturbed I did not hire him. He could not match the estimate and work the more expensive roofer quoted me. I did not sign his contract.

When Dan came out to give us a quote, he noted the loss of roof shingles could probably be claimed under an insurance loss. He met with the adjuster and got us a settlement that was very favorable. We upgraded to a metal roof which looks great. He was professional and prompt about communicating installation delays due to weather and very responsive by text and phone. Left the job site clean and repaired damage to an exterior light which occurred during shingle removal without any hesitation. Excellent team!

It was wonderful working with James. I was looking for a quick estimate of repair for my roof after the hurricane and he was confident, fair priced, and most importantly quick to get it repaired. I would not hesitate to work with James and Home Pros in the future if the need arises.

Working with Dan was an absolute pleasure. His work is top notch, he is prompt, professional, honest, and just an all around great guy. I received quotes from several roofers/contractors and no one else actually took the time to get on my roof and really take a good look at it. Dan came to my home and spent more time examining my roof, attic, house, etc than all the other roofers combined. He really spent the time to make sure he wasn't just throwing numbers at me while getting a very accurate idea of price, time, and depth of the job. I can absolutely recommend Dan and Mac Bros wholeheartedly.

James came very promptly-within an hour or two-to diagnose my problem with some water getting into my house via a pipe on the roof. By the end of the day, the problem was fixed, documented by pictures. His rates are fair and he is an excellent communicator. I will be calling him again for some more projects.

Mr. Hunter Bachuss from Renovations Innovation kept me informed throughout all phases of the project. My property is old New Orleans that have been plagued with various leaked. They recommended removal of the obsolete chimney and replaced my rafters and shingles. The roof looks like new and that old chimney won’t be missed. Thank you Mr. Hunter and crew!!

Very disappointed in service that I received (or did not receive). We hired Travis to do some roof repairs and to fix a leak. He replaced a few shingles and said that was the cause of the leak. A couple weeks later when it rained, we noticed that there was still water leaking in. We called Travis several times and couldn't get in touch with him. When we finally got in touch with him (after a week of trying) he set up an appointment for Saturday morning and never showed up or called.

They exemplify the values above. Dan Macclusky, the owner, stays very closely involved in the roofing job -- from the estimate to completion. He spends the time to really understand what the client needs and expects and then performs with professionalism. If you want a cheap job, don't waste your time calling him -- and good luck to you. Generally, you do get what you pay for, and in Dan's case, you get even more. We recommend him highly. Arlene Montgomery and Bruce Plowman

Mac Bros was always on site before the agreed upon time. They made a thorough evaluation of the roof to ensure the problem was addressed, working directly with the insurance adjuster, leaving me out of the middle. He was clear about what was and was not covered by the quote. He added enhancements to the job - better protective layer than the quote without adding to the price. At every stage, he followed up, keeping me informed of the status. The job was completed in one day and the job site left clear with no debris. I recommend them and would use them again.

Hiring an honest, reliable contractor in New Orleans seems to be as hard as driving down a street with no potholes but somehow I completely lucked out with Dan Mccluskey!! Not only did Dan come out within a couple of days and provided me with a fair quote, he followed up several times when NONE of the other companies did. During and after completing the work, he sent photos along the way. My tenant called and said she was very happy with the roofing job and 3 months later, still no more leaks! You’re the best Dan, I couldn’t thank you enough!!

I contact Barilleau Enterprises through Thumbtack to have four whirlybird attic ventilation fans installed on my roof. Mr. Barilleau and his crew did a fantastic job and I couldn't be happier with the results. Mr. Barilleau was able to have my project completed within a few days from my first conversation with him. He stands behind his work and does what he says he'll do. He was prompt, friendly and highly professional.. and all at a great price! I will definitely be keeping Mr. Barilleau's card for any future projects that may arise from this point going forward. I couldn't be happier! A+++++!
