"My husband, Alex, and myself were married on 3/21/17 by Lorrie Werden-Barnes. My wedding day, and Lorrie, were amazing. See, I'm a planner. I correspondedack and forth with Lorrie about details, suggestions on venue as well as many other topics a bride typically worries about. I was not a typical bride. I am 50 years old and this was not my first time being married. Alex and I planned elopement ceremony in my favorite city, New Orleans. No family were accompanying us, it was our elopement trip / honeymoon. We love the outdoors and wished to marry outside. Lorrie made many fine suggestions but my favorite suggestion was to perform the ceremony under the "Tree of Life" located in beautiful city park in NOLA. Lorrie reassured me she would find my required two witnesses and gave me the contact info for the Court clerks office regarding legal details. On the morning of our marriage day, we went to pay for our marriage license take care of the legal forms and applications. (I forgot to mention, we traveled to NOLA from St. Louis and arrived that weekend prior to marriage date). We wanted to marry specifically on 3/21/17 because this was a special day for us)...........Soooooo, after being at the clerks office for two hours we were not able to obtain our marriage license because if a minor technicality. Alex was a widower and his name was not located on his former spouses death certificate. WOW ! Talk about panic. We were scheduled to meet under the beautiful Tree of Life at 2pm and it was now approaching noon and we did not have our marriage license. I frantically phoned Lorrie, in tears, letting her know of our situation. Lorrie was so sweet. She was calm and reassuring and asked me, "Do you like the Ocean"? Well......YEAH! I love the ocean but had no idea where she was going with that question. Lorrie advised that there was a small city in the State of Mississippi about an hour away from NOLA. She told us the coastline and beach was beautiful and suggested we drive on over to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. ( Now remember, we were from StL in Missouri). How cool was this! It was about noon and Lorrie advised us to go check out the beaches and see if we line the area and then phone her and she would meet us there. She made herself 100% available to us and continuously reminded us that "this is our day and she wanted to help us make it as special as it could be". We made hus trip and found this little city to be a beautiful little p,ace, gorgeous old homes, kinda upscale community, beautiful coastline, Marina with gorgeous boats along the coastline, many scenic piers and the list goes on and on. I called Lorrie about 3pm ish and let her know we found our perfect location. Towards the end of the coastline of this ocean view drive, we saw a cool tree surround by a round bench. The tree was united at the bottom but spread into half, like two separate strong trunks to the tree. I just thought it was a pretty tree, ON THE BEACH.......BY THE OCEAN. Alex said, " That's beautiful baby, but there's something in that tree". We excitedly parked the car and went to get a closer look at this tree. There were two angels carved into the tree. One on each side of the split. There was a small sign with the title, Tree of Angels. Ironically, since the day I met Alex he has told me that he lost his mother giving birth to him and he has had HIS ANGEL watching over him his entire life. It was like his Momma had let us know she wanted to be at our wedding, you know? It sent chills down my spine. We knew this was the place we were meant to be married. Lorrie was there within an hour and a half and we were married , under the Tree of Angels , on the beach, with the beautiful blue ocean waves as our background music. We were so grateful to Lorrie. She was so sweet, so professional and I felt like she went above and beyond my expectations. Needless to say, we added a generous tip to try to show our appreciation. LORRIE MADE MY MARRIAGE DAY PERFECT and we will be forever grateful."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
