While in New Orleans on vacation with friends, I wanted to have a surprise birthday dinner for my husband outside by the swim-spa at the place we were staying. Christopher of CS Events was very easy to work with regarding the menu and the price. He brought everything needed for this meal...table and chairs for six, cutlery, linens and even chair covers! Christopher not only was our chef, he was also our server too! Unfortunately crayfish was out of season when we were there but I still wanted something with New Orleans flair incorporated into the meal. Christopher topped our meal off with a wonderful flambe`. Banana's Foster was the perfect end to a wonderful, delicious meal.

I had a private dinner party at my home with Chef Chris Cody the catering Chef. He came on time, was very neat and tidy, prepared the dinner at my home and served us. The three course meal was fantastic and I have already recommended him to a friend that used him to cater a bridal luncheon. She as well as very pleased. I would recommend Chef Chris Cody to cater any of your events!

Rita cooks some of the best food I have ever eaten. I went to a pop-up dinner and every course was on point! The service was great. Food comes out with perfect timing. The food at The PDR shop in the St. Roch Market is delicious too. Love the chicken sandwich.

It was only in March that we decided to marry in June 2018, and we decided on a small wedding of 60-75 people. And the very first detail that I wanted to take care of was food. I googled "caterer for small wedding in New Orleans" and miraculously, on Thumbtack, Gerard Maras's name came up - there were other names, but in reading about Chef Maras's life in the cooking world, I instinctively knew he was the one. I responded to his message inviting me to contact him. He quickly responded and once I spoke to him, I knew he was the best choice for me. He was interested in finding out about my vision for our wedding, and in listening to my thoughts and ideas about what I thought I might want, over the next few weeks he presented me with pictures of food possibilities and ideas. He was so helpful in discussing each dish with me, and soon came up with a finished menu for a wonderful wedding feast with delicious, unusual and beautiful food. A wedding with all the details to figure out can be very stressful, especially on short notice, but Gerard Maras exudes a sense of calm, confidence and professionalism that made everything for our wedding smooth and easy. The food was wonderful, especially his freshly made pasta with a crawfish sauce, and his food was the hot topic at our wedding. All of our family and friends are still talking about having had the best food they ever had at a wedding. He has a unique talent in not only being a wonderful chef, but knowing what foods are complimentary to each other, and presenting food beautifully, and using only the best seasonal, highest quality and fresh food. He is a real artist in that he makes everything seem effortless, but what he does requires the greatest talent and skill. Thank you Gerard, for making our wedding a truly memorable event - not just for Joe and I, but for all of our family and dear friends.

Top 5 meals I've ever had in my life! Chef Gason was always very professional and responsive with any questions/concerns. One of our guests has a dairy allergy, and Gason was extremely accommodating. He was punctual, and reasonably priced considering the quality of the meal. Easily the highlight of our trip to NOLA. Gason is the best!

Amazingly delicious food prepared onsite - and our guests were horribly delayed - so the time we sat down to eat was as well (by over an hour), so I expect the challenges in the kitchen were many - but you would never have know it from the charming demeanor of the chef and the freshness of the food!

Blair is an amazing chef! She came into my air bnb and taught my group how to prepare all of our favorite foods! She was professional and fun. The menu was very diverse and handled the flow extremely well. I plan on working with Blair in the future. If you are looking for a chef to prepare a meal or teach a class she is your girl.

    About

I have been cooking for 30 years now from cafes to fine dining. I want to take it a little slower. I am 55 years old, and I am slowing down, but I can still cook my heart out good healthily meals with that good down home flair. I also love to bake fresh goods everyday with grandma in mind.

    About

I am Kristian. I was born and raised in NOLA, so I already had an eclectic interest in cuisines from an early age. I have traveled and lived all over the United States working as everything from sous chef to head chef of many different styles of restaurants. Although I like to work in a more personal setting where I can cater to the customer in a more genuine way, I feel through this I can be real with my cooking.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
