Bertrand is a fantastic guitar teacher and clearly a very gifted musician. When I decided to get guitar lessons, I was a little overwhelmed by the choices on thumbtack and I checked out another teacher before I went with Bertrand. Even at the outset, he was very helpful in a non-intrusive way, making sure that he's available and eager to teach but allowing one to make one's choice in one's own time. I've been very happy with my choice. I knew nothing about the guitar when I started and can be easily intimidated or frustrated, but I've been pleasantly surprised by how much fun it's been to learn from him. He's always cheerful, positive, encouraging and most of all, he works hard to make it fun for the learner. He mixes music theory with practice drills seamlessly. The 1hr class goes by quickly and I'm surprised to find that I enjoy practicing!

My daughter has been going to take voice & guitar lessons for a few years and her voice is developing tremendously. Jeanne responded quickly to the request, was a very good communicator, and through the first two guitar lessons with my daughter, things seem to be going very well! I greatly appreciate her willingness to travel a fair distance to come to our home and conduct the guitar lessons. Highly recommended!

About a year ago, my eight-year-old son expressed an interest in learning to play the drums. As a guitar player, I was thrilled with the prospect of having a drummer in the family. I began asking around for teacher recommendations and learned that a friend’s daughter had been taking lessons at Page Music. She spoke extremely highly of the experience, which prompted me to call the school. From the first phone call to the first lesson, the experience couldn’t have been better. Elliot immediately made me feel comfortable when I contacted him. He eloquently and clearly explained the school’s philosophy, as well as the cost structure and other mechanics of setting up lessons. After the first lesson with Rick, my son sprang out of the instruction room with a huge grin on his face. I asked him how it went. His response: “When can I come back?!” Beyond being a superb teacher, Rick has a winning way with kids. He’s patient, considerate, and truly cares about students’ progress. Above all else, though, Rick makes learning FUN. And for an eight-year-old boy filled with energy and lots of activities competing for his time, fun may be the single most important factor that keeps him interested in an instrument and motivated to practice on a daily basis. My son performed at his first recital this past weekend. It was a joy to watch him on stage and I’m looking forward to many more. On a more selfish level, I now have a live-in drummer to jam with, which makes an old rock-‘n’-roller like me a really happy guy. Page Music rocks!

Tim has been very flexible and cooperative, especially when it comes to finding good times for meeting. Tim is also very accommodating, and has already gone out of his way to help me on my way--he traveled quite a distance to check out a guitar sale and saved me from purchasing a guitar that actually needed significant repairs. I look forward to my future lessons with him.

"I started Portuguese lessons with Paulo because I wanted a native Portuguese speaker as a teacher. What I got was SO much more. Paulo is very passionate about his language, his teaching, and clearly cares whether the student is understanding and assimilating the lessons presented. His training and career as an Opera singer provides him with flawless and beautiful pronunciation that is literally music to my ears. Because of his voice training he can also hear the slightest deviation in my own pronunciation and accent, allowing me to slowly perfect my own Portuguese pronunciation. The lessons are paced well, not too fast, not too slow, and I can vary the pace as I need to. I've studied several languages before and have never enjoyed the process as much as I do with Paulo. Because Paulo is so personable, I'm laughing while learning my way to fluency!" Rick Oliver

I teach one-on-one weekly guitar lessons out of my loft in Fort Point in South Boston Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. I teach at Mass Ave Music on Mondays Wednesdays and Saturdays just outside Union Square in Somerville MA. I offer half-hour, forty-five-minute, one-hour and two-hour lessons. For rates and dates, shoot me an email. I am Berklee Graduate and Berklee Faculty member! Styles Include: Rock (pentatonic licks, phrasing, bends, songs) Punk (Down Picking, Chuck Berry Licks and More) Blues (intros, tunarounds, major and minor pentatonic soloing ideas, rhythm playing) Country (3rds, 6ths, intros and endings, Travis picking, pedal steel bends, single note runs) Folk (finger picking, chords, songs) Surf (Tremelo Picking, Learn to get a deep tone) Metal (alternate picking, sweeping, string skipping, tapping, legato techniques, speed exercises, crazy harmonics, rhyyjm and drop d playing, 4-3-2-1 chops builder method I created myself) Roots, americana (finding cool guitar parts buried within the song, utilizing all your experience and techniques, to come up with the coolest guitar part, when to play and when not to play) Funk/R&B (rhythm exercises and development of pocket playing) And a whole lot more Learn : Harmony (theory, chord construction, re-harm techniques, sub V's, modal ideas) Ear training (through song transcription and exercises) Songwriting (harmonic and melodic development, lyric writing and arranging) fret-board mechanics (mastery of the fret-board) and more... Below are what my students say: "I've been playing the guitar for 10 or so years, and I was very proud of the fact that I have never taken any lessons. However, for the past few years, I've found myself stuck playing the same patterns, chords and solos over and over again. I watched a great friend of mine go from being a pretty mediocre (hey, he'll be the first to admit it!) guitarist to being able to rip through any Clapton solo and Sultans of Swing after taking some lessons with Tony, so I figured I'd give it a shot. After only a few lessons, I found myself moving around the fretboard with much more confidence, and I was playing things I never thought I'd be able to play. Whether you're a crusty old seasoned cocky guitar player like myself or someone who's just getting started, Tony will give you the chops you need." - Bennett Kolasinski "Tony is patient, encouraging and entertaining; he rocks! Never having prior lessons, all I expected was to learn one song, but he's helped me to surpass that goal and to appreciate more about music than I had ever imagined. I always leave the guitar lesson happier than when I walked in!" - Sherri Smith "When you take lessons with Tony, you're not just taught chords, so you can play a Van Halen or a Nirvana riff. You're taught the fundamentals in a way that you become familiar and almost in tune with your guitar. If you find any other knucklehead that can do that, I'll pay for your lessons. Actually, I won't, but you should take lessons with Tony anyway. He's that good." - Jessica Green "Tony kicks the most ass of any guitar teacher out there. He is patient and encouraging, but in no time will have you playing things you didn't think you could play. He will give you a good music foundation while letting you learn the music you like the most. If you're serious about playing guitar, he's the man." - Ami E Albernaz "I've studied under four different guitar teachers, and Tony is the first one that's been able to clearly explain how the different parts - key signature, chord progressions, scale patterns, picking technique - all fit together. My first lesson was six weeks ago, and the guys in my band have already noticed a huge difference." - Glen Goland "I have been going to Tony for lessons since this past spring, and my playing has improved tremendously. He has helped me work on my left-hand technique, improve my picking, introduced me to new approaches to playing various types of licks and has helped me with my approach to learning other artist's songs. On top of that, Tony is an excellent teacher, an amazing player and extremely easy to get along and work with" - David Schwartz "Tony is a wonderful teacher. I've only been taking lessons with him for three months and had never touched a guitar before. Now, I'm starting to play my favorite songs! Not only do I learn the techniques and theory but also how to develop an ear for the music which is amazing, considering I had always thought I was tone deaf. Tony keeps me motivated; he is patient, yet perceptively authoritative. Also, his irresistible Sicilian wit makes the whole thing so much fun!" - Anneke Boese "If you're looking for an instructor who will take you to the next level based on where you are musically, Tony is your man. He has a great talent for identifying and teaching you what you need to get where you want to go." - Dave Yanolis

I had played guitar many years ago, but was self-taught and never made the progress I had hoped to make. Deciding to start playing again, I found David nearby my residence, who was very accommodating about lesson time and location. My first lesson with David convinced me that he was very knowledgeable and able to adapt to whatever skill level and style of playing I had. My tastes span rock to jazz, and David is versatile in the entire spectrum. Further, he is very personable and was a pleasure to interact with. I highly recommend David for anyone seeking instruction at any level.

Get private music lessons from Lidija Peno (violin) and Chari Peno (bass, guitar and piano) at their studio on Marion Rd. Every week, Chari Peno also travels to the homes of about 12 students in Acton, Concord, Sudbury, and Quincy. Relying on their long experience as performing instructors and musicians, Lidija and Chari Peno dedicate themselves to helping both kids and adults discover the wonderful world of music through competent guidance and inspiration. Chari has written a personal letter on working with children: "While professional competence is obviously a condition for teaching, personal approach is as important with children. I prefer to see my students like me personally, but also respect my authority. This is necessary, so that there's satisfaction and success. I am very particular about what I expect to be done for homework and strict about weekly practice assignments. I believe in continuity. I believe in honest communication with the kids. I've settled for Alfred's beginner's piano method, as I find the introduction of new material well graduated, with timely revision of older subjects and every next piece building on the previous. The music is also quite exciting and inspirational for kids. I was mostly raised in the old German tradition that is, by itself, quite rigid. Fortunately, my interest and education in jazz (completely different from classical) has broadened my view on how we perceive and learn music. In a nutshell, classical tradition focuses heavily on formal rules, etc., and it can be pretty dull (not that the formal stuff are unimportant). In addition, I try taking advantage of a natural sense for music that almost all kids have: their natural responsiveness to rhythms and their preference and ability to use sheer imitation to learn things. Based on this, I eventually introduce some jazz songs and improvisation without using sheet music. Kids learn amazingly fast this way; their eyes, ears, and hearts remain wide open, and they love devouring music. All said, I listen to the kids and try to follow their lead because learning is different from one kid to the other. Then, I determine the best way of handling each student, whether to be less or more strict, or deem an assignment as too much, etc." In November 2009, Zach's younger brother, Jeremy, is becoming better at an awesome speed. He sounds almost professional after approximately two years of serious guitar practice, and sometimes, he delivers wonderful solos which I wish I had come up with. Let's see if Jeremy follows in his brother's steps to Berklee College of Music and becomes a professional musician. In June 2008, there was a great news indeed. One of my guitar students, Zachary Bernstein, has been accepted to Berklee College of Music as a jazz guitar performance major after working very hard for a little more than two years. Not only has Zach made it in, but he has also been awarded with a generous merit-based scholarship - an extremely rare recognition, especially for guitarists. At 17, Zach is already a professional player for local bands. Good luck, Zach. You may very well have an amazing professional career ahead of you. In June 2008, another student of mine, Meyer Brown, has been accepted into the musicology program at UMASS-Amherst. Boy, he has had to endure three to five-hour lessons and not once. All the sweating did pay off. Congratulations!

About

A good teacher is someone who can be patient, as well as empathize with a person's ability to help them grow in whatever style/genre they are interested in. I also believe a good teacher is one who can help motivate and inspire students to learn and explore the subject for themselves, giving them tools to help develop techniques and concepts. Music to me is also not just about the technical aspects; it's also about a deeper connection that has to be explored through listening and response. I am currently a full-time jazz performance student at Berklee College of Music and have been teaching and playing for the past 8 years. Since I started, I have explored all different styles, from southern rock and jam band to funk, jazz, and classical. I teach students of all ages and skill levels. I like to promote a comfortable, stress-free learning environment so people don't feel intimidated. Music is supposed to make people feel, and I try to give students a sense of emotional response and creativity when they finish a lesson.

I am a 25-year old Berklee student (graduating in May), majoring in professional music with a minor in music education. I play guitar, bass, and piano, and am comfortable playing and teaching most styles. I can work with absolute beginners or more intermediate players who are interested in learning concepts of music theory, sight reading, voice leading, arranging, composition, etc. I charge $30/hour or $15/half hour for individual lessons. I can do group lessons for a discounted rate ($50/hour for two people or $65 for three if you want to bring a friend or family member along to learn). Students must provide their own instrument and keep it in playable condition. A guitar that is not properly maintained will hinder your progress. I teach you the skills you need to perform live, and I teach it by using music you like. Becoming a good musician is a lot of work, but it is supposed to be fun, and I will work with you to make sure your lessons are tailored to your interests and needs.

About

In 2007, multi-instrumentalist Dan Fox founded the Morningside Music Studio in Arlington's Morningside neighborhood. His vision was to have a laid back and supportive environment he and his wife, Jennifer Elowsky-Fox could teach private lessons and jazz ensembles. It has proved a good idea as groups and lesson times have started to fill with musicians of all levels eager to play and improve. Morningside offers weekly ongoing jazz ensembles. You can join one anytime and continue as long as you like. Work on improvisation techniques as well as building a repertoire of tunes. Topics include playing modal jazz, blues, standards, scales for improvisation, how to build a solo, phrasing, pacing, dynamics, and a lot more. Instruments accepted are piano, bass, guitar, drums, vocalists, and horn players. Players should either have some knowledge of harmony or be somewhat new to jazz but have some proficiency on their instruments. The idea will be to group people together who are at similar levels. Steinway grand piano, amps, and drums are available. Each group will be limited to four players. Morningside groups play concerts every few months. Previous venues include The Lily Pad, Ryles Jazz Club, The Chit Chat Lounge, Somerville Cable Access TV, and various coffeehouses. Fee is $25/class. No obligation to continue after first class if you choose not to. All groups are taught by Dan Fox. Schedule: Please contact us for the current schedule of evening and weekend daytime groups. Combos at all levels from beginning to advance are currently being offered. "The Morningside Music student ensemble is the ideal introduction into (or exploration of) the jazz world for the beginner/intermediate level player. In the short time since I've started, not only have I built substantially on my repertoire, but learned useful concepts for soloing and accompaniment. Under competent direction (and with a little hard work) you'll be amazed how you grow as a musician in leaps and bounds- two thumbs up!" Ethan Kaczowka - guitarist, 23 yrs. old

About

Private guitar lessons with award winning producer, guitarist, songwriter, and private instructor, Michael Dinallo. As a producer, guitarist, and one half of The Tremolo Twins, Michael Dinallo has made records on Soul Legend Eddie Floyd ("Eddie Loves You So" which was Eddie's return to the revitalized Stax Records), Norwegian pop artist William Hut ("Nightfall" on Universal Records which yielded the Number One Hit "Take It Easy" and earned both the Gold and Platinum Awards), and has landed many records into various Top Ten of the Year Lists among them Alastair Moock's "Let It Go", The Mercy Brothers, and The Radio Kings. Other artists Michael currently works with or has worked with included Dennis Brennan, Jerry Portnoy, Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish, Stan Martin, Kevin Connolly, and Juliet and the Lonesome Romeos among others. Michael relocated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1985 to study guitar and arranging at Berklee College of Music. After two years of study there, Michael left Berklee to study with blues guitar virtuoso Ronnie Earl. Introduced by Ronnie to the storied local and national blues scene in Boston, Michael formed the Radio Kings with Brian Templeton in 1991 and since then has left his musical stamp all over the world leading various bands and producing hit records. Steve Morse of the Boston Globe called Michael, “…one of the key figures (of the Boston scene.)” Michael has become known as the man behind the artist: “Thanks to Michael Dinallo’s dynamic production...the sound [Alastair Moock’s 'Let it Go'] is shot through with rugged clarity” wrote Dan Gewertz in the Boston Herald and “Dinallo is that rare self-effacing guitarist who eschews the spotlight” said Bill Dahl in Living Blues Magazine. Michael works with the artists he produces to help them fully realize their vision whether that is Scandinavian country-pop or low down American roots music. With a philosophy that you do what the song calls for, Michael emphasizes melody and groove. All this is done with important attention to the sonic depth of the recording. Michael provides a deep, striking mood that is individual to each artist. This deceptively simple and relaxed approach to recording allows the artists, whether singer or instrumentalist, to soar. Loudon Temple said this in Maverick Magazine regarding the William Hut record 'Days To Remember', “Dinallo brings some classy touches to the production room…. beautifully soulful…. guitar in hand, the producer’s experience as main man with the Radio Kings, finds him in such groovy fettle that he hits B.B. King highs.” "Dinallo has a reputation as a player and producer who knows how to sublinate his ego in service to the material, and doesn't let habit get in the way when looking for the right sound.....(He) works up a steady soul sweat. It's his vision of rock and roll heaven - with brown Fender amps." -Rick Allen, Vintage Guitar July 2010 “Pop music has a history of great production teams..........Now Boston has a new duo vying for honors: Michael Dinallo and Ducky Carlisle. With their penchant for dialing in the right vibe for any type of roots music — blues, country, R&B, folk, primal rock — they could call themselves the Rust Brothers if they weren’t already known as the Tremolo Twins.
