High praise for Otis Read. He is a talented musician, and shares his musical creativity and teaching skills with me every Friday morning. He has done so since September 2017. Otis is attentive, patient, congenial and enthusiastic.
He has innovative answers for the numerous questions I have about chords, reading music, fingerpicking—anything that comes up during our lessons. He brings himself totally to these lessons, never preoccupied or rushing through them. I am always curious, and he takes the time to show me alternative keys for various songs, styles/methods of strumming/plucking as well as inventive “moves” on the guitar. I have learned so much in the nine months we’ve been working together. Otis is also honest, no false praise from him. He challenges me weekly, making me a better player.
When I get discouraged about being unable to negotiate a complicated chord or frustrated with my lack of plucking agility, he’s always encouraging and supportive.
One anecdote: Several of my musicians friends,—guitar, mandolin and stand-up bass —were playing at my house recently during a big party. They insisted I play with them—I was petrified, deer-in-the-headlights intimated. I got my guitar and sat in with this talented group, and while I’m not in their league at all, I was able to handle the material and sound good. The musicians complimented me and the rest of our friends applauded. Wow! Thank you, Otis!
