Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Reviews for Fall River movers

It was definitely nerve-racking when I was looking for movers, since so many people warn that just because a company has the lowest price doesn't mean they are a good quality movers. I definitely lucked out by hiring Son Light because they were the most affordable, and they did a wonderful job. I was combining two apartments into one house, and Geoff agreed to start at one, load everything, move to the second apartment, load more, and then move everything in at once. It worked out perfectly. The movers were extremely friendly, and I was so impressed with how well they packed the truck (we had A LOT of things to move). They were able to complete 2 entire house holds in just 7 hours. There was no charge for travel, which was great because we were moving from Providence to Fall River, and the men were extremely pleasant the entire time. Definitely worth every penny, and I would definitely suggest this company to anyone hiring movers.

Moving can be stressful and crazy. I was a little skeptical about hiring movers but these guys were amazing! Perla was such a sweetheart and helped us decide how long to book and what services we needed. The gentleman that helped us move were patient, kind, fast workers and respectful of my things!! They got the job done. We would have finished before the 3 hours we booked, but due to some difficulties with furniture not fitting through very narrow hallways we went over by an hour and a half. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with how professional they were. I moved from a 3rd floor to a 2nd floor and they did great. I would definitely recommend this moving company. Thank you Top Concierge

The guys at Round the Clock were super helpful to me in my move. When all my friends ended up with doctors appointments the day of my move, Round the Clock took care of me with next day service. They helped me move my 2 BR apartment out in less than two hours. Everything got wrapped in blankets and moved carefully. The guys worked fast and offered assembly, disassembly, and even organization when we got to the new house. You can tell they care about their business - I strongly recommend them and would definitely use them again in the future. Keep up the good work

Real Deal Van Lines Inc. is where I received my worst customer service experience in life. I called a few weeks before I needed moving assistance and booked a moving day to move my apartment from one city to another about 20-30 miles away. The quote was a great price and so was the time they estimated it would take to move a 3 bedroom apartment. The day of the move I was prepared for the movers. They started moving my things into the truck. I only received to movers. I was cleaning up the apartment a bit and noticed I hadn't heard anyone coming in for boxes for awhile and we still had quite a bit to move in the truck. I looked out the window and the movers were no where to be found. I later saw them both coming out of the truck. They started back up again and time was passing fast. When we hit the half way mark of the time that was quoted to me I started t get concerned because they were not half way done and I was being charged by the hour. I spoke to one of the movers about my concern and he said that I could speak to Anna. He called her and then handed the phone to me. Anna explained that they were working efficiently and that she believed I was over inventoried. They claimed I had over 100 boxes which was a flat out lie! I counted 52. When I expressed y concerns about how much my bill was going to be she immediately said they now require a credit card number for balance at the end. This made me upset because I had provided a deposit and the understanding I had with this company was to provide this information at the end. There was no reason for her to request this time of service. She stated that if I did not provide it the were going to leave my things on the street! With no other options, I provided my credit card number. This company bullied me into giving m credit card number and threatened to leave my things on the street! Completely ridiculous! We got to my new place and I only saw one guy really working with bothered me because I was getting charged by time and they BOTH should have been working. A small 3 bedroom apartment move took this company 8 hours!!!!! I could have had my friends and family do his job in less time! I have hired a moving company before and it was nothing like this. Unfortunately they were booked up for this day. After the move was complete I dealt with Anna a few more times. I told her how upset I was about the business exchange. She offered a refund but was not sure on the amount and would have to get back to me. In conversation I mentioned reporting this issue and she got extremely upset a revoked her offer for a refund. She is completely erratic and does not have any customer service skills. I never got a refund. I will never use this company again and I will tell everyone I know to stay far away from using this company as well. They are crooks and bullies and should not be in business!

Slava and his team are excellent and efficient in moving my furniture to my new residence. They were friendly, courteous and handled every piece of my furniture with care. I also appreciated the time that Slava took to notify me that the team was going to be delayed. To me and any other customer I commend his courtesy and responsibility to make sure that the moving truck was running smoothly. Thanks so much again, Slava. - Jadwiga

Would not recommend. Changed quoted price twice. Promised 3 movers but got 2. Cosmetically damaged some stuff, but nothing major. Very friendly, just wish they owned up to the quote they gave me.

They were the best! They showed up on time. They made sure I had their contact information. They were extremely nice and professional. They went above and beyond the call of duty moving our sofa to the third floor. I am so glad I found them. I wouldn’t hire anyone else. Their price is very reasonable. I would recommend them to anyone!!
