OMG! Hands down, your search ends here. Bill and Wendy are phenomenal; so responsive to email and phone calls. Conducted a site visit and offered sample tastings without being asked. Food was excellent. They did a mid-afternoon reception with about 10 different appetizers/desserts outside in 90 degree heat for 200 people. Presentation was gorgeous. Cold stuff remained cold, hot stuff remained hot, everything was beautiful and stayed replenished. Their demeanor is incredible. The only thing that people complimented more than the food was the catering staff. Truly you will not go wrong with them. 10 years as a innkeeper and 4 years as an event coordinator, I'm a critical judge of quality and service. I give them 5 stars without reservation. Thank you Bill & Wendy for making the 2017 USM Staff Recognition Event a very special day. People loved you and your food! Sara and her team provided fantastic catering services to a house party of forty people. Sara customized the menu and provided the right service and peace of mind to the host for the occasion. Guests gushed at the exquisite spread and food. Where so many caterers are high priced and rigid, Sara's courtesy, professionalism, flexibility, responsiveness and affordability back an art form.

The short version: we hired Daniel for our wedding of 89 people. He is an excellent cheff, he makes high quality delicious food and at a very reasonable price. He delivered exactly what we were looking for and more. The longer version if you have time: we found Daniel on this website, or he found us when we posted an inquiry. We were unsure if the event would be 150 people or 90 as we invited many from oversees. He had a proposed menu with pricing within hours. Within a day we had spoken on the phone and were Confirmed for our wedding 8 months or so away. As we weren't living in California we could not meet in person but reading Daniels reviews and speaking with him instilled confidence in our choice. Additionally I did reach out to another caterer to get a price check as it was recommended I do so from a friend. And when I opened the local companies quote I discovered they charges 3 times the price Daniel does, and were only offering a few appetizers, mains and a couple side dishes with 1 dessert. For 1/3 the price Daniel provided us with: 6 hot appetizers, cold station with dips and crudite upon guest arrival, delicious beef, a creamy chicken pesto with noodles, salmon with red pepper, salad w/ Gorgonzola and pear, rolls, roasted vegetables, AND many delicious desserts: creme brûlée, brownies, macaron (a surprise cookie as my family is French), coffee and tea -- and more I'm likely forgetting. He also provided licensed bartenders and a full staff. We provided our own alcohol and they did a very nice job with serving. Before the event Daniel prepared a "tasting" which I assumed meant a small sample of foods for the wedding. He came to our house with enough food to feed 6 of us for 3 days!!! And it was phenomenal. While with us he offered a place in his home for my family in France to stay if they needed. I'm not sure if I was more overjoyed by his kind, generous, caring and wonderful personality or his amazing culinary skills. We knew he was the BEST choice because not only would we get a great product from him but he as a person would add joy to the most joyful day of our lives. And on our wedding day 2 days ago, we heard comments about how delicious the food was from many of our guests. I attempted to try everything and was very pleased with the results (though I must admit my happiness interfered with my appetite on the day--but that's ok because I have leftovers to feed us for a week). One guest came up to me and said it was the best wedding food she had ever had. Giving our friends and family a delicious meal and great experience was so important to me and Daniel made that possible. I didn't see him until after the meal as the night was getting later but when I did it lit up my night even more! He and his beautiful wife were smiling as they worked in the kitchen and gave us such sweet wedding wishes. It was quite meaningful to me to be treated like a friend as well as with professionalism. If you are looking for a caterer with exceptional food, a wonderful personality, and great prices Daniel is your best choice. I would recommend him for an event of any size and Daniel, we will be contacting you in the future if we are ever looking for a caterer. Thank you so much!!!

Little Miss Sophie's catered our Thanksgiving dinner for about 25 people. The food was plentiful and delicious, and everyone at the table was satisfied with their meal. The food arrived on time and was completely set up and ready to go by our planned meal time. In addition, attention was paid to the little details for example - Jess brought tablecloths to put underneath the serving stations, candles to add to the ambiance, and Andes mints for after dinner. These were all things we hadn't discussed and they added positively to our experience. Prior to the meal, I communicated with Jess primarily through e-mail. Her responses were prompt and professional, and she worked with me to customize a meal that would suit my family's needs. The whole experience could not have been easier. Little Miss Sophie's Restaurant will definitely be our go-to business when we need catering in the area!

I had a lobster bake for a group of 35. The food was delicious everyone raved that the steamers were the best they had ever tasted. Very professional and easy to work with. I really liked that she spaced out the courses and allowed us to socialize. It was not a rushed meal. I can't wait to use her services again.

Like many brides, I began the tedious process of searching for a caterer for our upcoming wedding. I spoke to several catering companies that resided in the Boston area but their pricing for one night was far too expensive considering our wedding was going to span three full days for all guests. I continued to search for caterers and came across J&L Catering, which also happened to be local to me. Our first phone conversation went amazingly. John really understood my vision and was able to provide all the elements we needed for our three days (raw bar, carving station, and lobster bake). The pricing for all three days was fantastic. I was nervous that in order to meet such a great price, perhaps the food quality would be lacking. Boy was I wrong! We had our tasting of each of our three menus and everything was delicious, tender, juicy, and full of flavor. My fiancé and I were blown away with how amazing the food tasted. We could not have been more pleased with the final outcome for our wedding weekend. Our guests haven’t stop talking about how great the food was. And besides taste and price, the last element you hope for is good customer service. John and his team have this in spades. Every time I had a question about the menu or what to rent for plates, etc.; I always received a prompt phone call or email with a reply. As a bride trying to plan their big day, it is so nice to have someone there to quickly answer your questions. By the end of our long planning process and wedding weekend, we really felt like John and his team was a part of our family. That is nearly impossible to find this day and age. If you are looking to book a caterer, look no further than J&L Caterers. You will not be disappointed!

William catered our family style wedding reception for 170 people at a private venue and we could not be happier. Not only is the food he cooks amazing, the service he provides is second to none. Prior to reaching out to William, we had been working with another larger, better known, and well-reviewed catering company. They turned out to be entirely unhelpful, unwilling to offer alternatives to help keep our budget manageable and did not take kindly to any requests outside their standard menu and offerings. After eating the deposit on our first caterer, we gave William a call and he provided the exact opposite experience. From our first phone call until after the event was over, he was wonderful to work with. He helped us with crafting a menu, determining alcohol volume (we had a backyard wedding), cocktail and reception layout, and even timeline. He was always very quick to respond, made extremely helpful suggestions, worked around our schedules (and held the tasting in our apartment), accommodated changes to dishes to make sure we got exactly what we wanted, provided more food (and rentals!) for far less money than other caterers we assessed, and had an extremely professional service staff. After it was all over, he put some leftover food in our fridge and my wife and I were able to enjoy it again for dinner the following night with a bottle of champagne. If you're looking for a caterer that really cares not only about the food that he cooks but also about you and making your event amazing, you've already found him.

Words cannot describe how happy my wife and I are with SYB Event planning and Soraya for planning an amazing 1st Birthday Party for my daughter, this past August. From the day I found her up until the party, she has been nothing but helpful, supportive and very creative. SYB Event Planning also supplied the catering to us as well, from their catering division. The food and service was very good!! All my guests were very happy on how beautiful and fun the party was. I will definitely considering hiring Soraya again for future events. Both the catering and the planning are highly recommended!

I used Lori's catering services for a small get together and birthday party for about 30 people. Since I was a novice at party giving, Lori was very good about checking in with me along the way and making suggestions about both the menu and the setup. We had more than enough food which had been a particular worry of mine since I could not picture amounts. The party was for noon on a Sunday and I elected to do sort of a blend between a brunch and a lunch. In particular, the strata, mango salad and berry fruit salad were the most popular and I found that the dressings, sauces and spreads that accompanied the food were what added to the uniqueness of the ham, rolls and other salads. Everything was tasty and fresh. The delivery person was on time and helpful with food placement as it was a buffet style. The dishes were all set to go on platters and we supplied the serving utensils and beverages. I would certainly recommend Lori for whatever occasion you might need these services.

The collective team at Thyme + Tide were absolutely amazing to work with. We hired them to cater our 150 person wedding, and it went off without a hitch. From the very beginning of the process, they took the time to listen, provide recommendations, deal with all of our changes, and all along the way were courteous and pleasant to work with. The wedding day itself was fabulous. We didn’t have to worry about a thing except eating all the delicious food they cooked! The food was laid out perfectly, and everything from the apps, to the main course and sides were fantastic. We had tons of great feedback from our guests. The venue owner also had great things to say about their professionalism and how wonderful of a job they did keeping things on schedule and picking up after they were done. We couldn’t ask for a better team to work with. I would recommend them in a heartbeat!

I know WOW Barbecue from way back; I even dined at their restaurant for a few times. I asked their customer service if they cater and they said yes. I employed them to provide food for my company’s product launch party for more than 200 guests. I contacted them 48 hours before our event, and they were able to deliver on such short notice. The owner and the customer service were very thoughtful; instead of trying to up-selling me, they tried to help me correctly estimate the number of guests and prevented me from over-ordering. Highly recommend them, definitely will hire them again!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
      • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
      • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
      • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
