Sara W. says, "Mr. Zheng is a handy work professional, he offers excellent job quality and craftsmanships. He responded my inquiries within just 15 mins; he understands the my worried emotions when I had problem with my powder room outlets. He visited my home and fixed my powder room outlets which I use to plug-in my electric heater at next day when we confirmed the job. He thought that I shouldn’t take any shower in this cold weather without heater. He also did extra work for free by inspecting my circuit breaker box and other outlets in working and safety conditions. Well, I can’t speak for other people but Mr. Zheng is definitely my handyman till I can find someone which it is difficult at these days. I had very bad experience with other bad handymen, a lot of them overpromised and did crappy job. Thank you!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

A contractor decided it would be a good idea to close up the outlets behind the baseboards. Beantown came to the rescue immediately, rearranging their schedule to do so. The main electrician they sent, Roy, explained to us what needed to be done and what our options were, kept us updated with text messages and photos, and restored light and power to our rental unit. Would highly recommend. Thanks Roy!

I reached out to EH Electric based on their great reviews. I would NOT recommend using them and will not ever again. 1. They charged $440 for 4 hours work, my tenant told me they were there not working nearly that long. 2. They weren’t able to identify the problem with the outlet and were supposed to follow up but never did. Other electricians have told me they should have come up with a solution, particularly after charging $440. My recommendation is to use someone else. Huge disappointment.

Please read - you will not regret reading this Short version: Do not look anywhere else. Hire Ralph for your next electrical adventure. My experience: As a first time home buyer, I was super excited to do a DIY kitchen without having to put a dent in my pocket. Ofcourse the electrical and the plumbing required licensed contractors. After meeting horrible people, really expensive people and horrible+ expensive people, I raised another request for an electrician. Enter Ralph. From the first conversation onwards, everything was extremely smooth flowing. He was punctual, understood what I was looking for and then provided his expertise to ensure its in the realm of the possibility. The quote came in 20 mins and was very well explained and didn't burn a hole in my pocket. Once I signed the contract and paid the initial deposit, the receipt was in my inbox in 10 mins and the permit was pulled the very next day. The job was scheduled 4 days later and he and his partner completed all the work in less than four hours. The inspection was scheduled without any follow up and we passed the inspection with no problems at all. I am now waiting for my cabinets to go back up and for Ralph to come and put in the finishing touches. I am glad I now have a electrician contact for all my upcoming projects Thank you Ralph!

I have nothing but good to say about my experience with Dave our electrician and EH Electric. Dave arrived on time both to scope the job and the next day to do the work. He had to fish wire for cable from out in the hallway through the kitchen into a bedroom in our unit, and it was not an easy task. But Dave and his partner did the job successfully, in the time frame he had expected and with a minimum of mess considering what the job entailed. The charge was exactly what he told me it would be, which my husband and I thought was in the lower end of the range we expected. A couple of other things that made this process easier: Dave communicated clearly with me and was in contact with me through calls and texts so I was aware of his fees, timeline, etc. Also fishing a wire through pot lights in the kitchen then making a hole in the ceiling of a closet - the least noticeable place - did make a minor mess that they insisted on sweeping up even though I insisted that I would. Absolutely a positive experience in every way.
