I’ve worked with Elizabeth Randall for about eight years years on interior design projects including historic academic buildings and residence halls at Harvard University. She has a real gift with color and design and understands what it means to create a warm, exciting and functional space. She is industrious, organized, ethical and open-minded. Her projects have been exclaimed at and enjoyed by many. I would recommend her without reservation for any design work you need.

Jen is great! I recommend her to anyone and everyone, no matter how big or small your space and/or budget are. She is friendly, genuinely interested in your satisfaction in your project, responds to emails and phone calls quickly, respects your preferences in style and budget, gives helpful tips, is affordable, and has a great taste and ideas. I transformed my dingy old apartment into a cool, modern, space with orange and black theme since orange is my fav color, and a drab kitchen into a bright, yellow, charming space (my 2nd fav color). I highly recommend Jen.

I had several painters come and give me quotes, but I knew Sarah was the one as soon as I met her. She was delightful and friendly and didn't talk down to me. As a single female homeowner, trust me, that's not a given. She had great reviews and a Facebook page with loads of pictures of beautiful painting jobs. And her prices are an outstanding value! I had one huge room, basically double height with a loft, and I wanted an accent wall. It had paint with an awful textures finish that needed to be sanded down. I also wanted the trim and the railing on the stairs to the loft. So three colors, two stories, and a 15x25 bedroom with walls had n.

January 27, 2015 Heidi helped us with designing and decorating my living room area and the upstairs wall space. This project encompassed purchasing products and furniture, supervising the installation, and making the finishing touches. Heidi is incredibly talented at ‘pulling the space together’ and executing on the home owners’ vision. She is incredibly thorough and creative- we had several art pieces that did not fit in standard frames and custom frames would have taken too long and expensive. She created borders with different color to create a dual border frames and the art and photos look amazing. Another thing that impressed me about Heidi is her ability to recommend various items at different price points and recommending where I should spend a little extra for quality vs. where I don’t have. The finished living room area and the walls look amazing and we highly recommend Heidi. We will definitely be making personal recommendations to our friends and family if and when they need this type of service. Kristie F.

Pamela helped pick out new wall colors for my new house. She was very professional and listened to my likes/ideas up front. Then, she did an inhome consultation with color swabs and helped ensure all colors would flow well throughout the house. The painters started work last week and I can't wait to see how it all looks! I enjoyed working with Pamela and would recommend her for anyone looking for color advice as well as layout/decoration.

Our designer, Barbara, came over for the free consultation. She detailed out every inch of our walk in closet and broke down our options by price point and value. When we decided to do our second closet at the same time, she came back without issue and we signed the contact that day. It took over a month for the closets to be cut & for an available worker to install them. Installation took almost 6 hours (one worker, Daniel, came and worked nonstop!) but well worth it in the end. They cut out the baseboard for it to fit seamlessly (optional) but now you can see where the baseboard was removed on the back wall. Must sand and repaint or your clothes will hide it anyways. For 2 closets the price wasn’t outrageous in comparison to other custom places (we had a coupon for CBD though which helped) and not a crazy amount more than other non-custom prefab places that wouldn’t utilize our space.

Deb Ellis is a very talented designer, decorator and stager. I have worked with her on multiple projects and each and every one resulted in a transformation of the space she worked on. She takes tiny rooms and make them look larger. She takes oddly shaped rooms and gives them purpose. She takes old fashioned and dated looking spaces and changes them so that they have clean lines and an up to date look. She is brilliant with colors, accessories, furniture selection and placement, fabric choices, location of wall hangings, rugs and art work so that rooms and entire houses look new, function better and are more welcoming and enjoyable. Her talent makes unremarkable spaces turn into pleasant, light filled places that draw you in and make you want to spend time in them. Her work earns praise from everyone who works with her. When she stages a house you can be sure it'll sell for a much higher price than expected. When she works in your home, you fall in love with it in a way you never imagined. She understands how to do very high end work and how to work within a budget. Her successful projects are both large and small. She is fun to work with and provides value every step of the way. I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend her to you. She is first class all the way and the most talented designer I've ever met.

Avery helped stage my house for sale, and provided design consultation for the family room. She helped me revise the family room layout, advised on the selection of furniture, accessories and window treatments. I appreciated her ability to combine her great design and color sense, while understanding and meeting my needs. I love the new room, and my house is now ready to put on the market.

I cannot say enough great things about Ann Marie. She is easy to talk to and has a very professional and comfortable vibe to her. Her free consultation was wonderful. She walked though my home (which was brand new and basically had nothing in it) and got right to work with ideas. She asked us thoughtful questions and wrote down notes and the sat down with us and brainstormed. We ended up hiring her for 6 hours of her time to start. She sent us wish lists from online of beautiful furniture, picked out paint colors, texted us at furniture stores, prioritized most important things first and got those done.... things and ideas I never would have thought of. She helped us with our bathroom, living room, dining room -- both furniture, set up and paint colors. She is very responsive and proactive and full of knowledge. When I go shopping I text her pictures and she gives me her honest opinion right off the bat which I love. One more thing is that she is not pushy - at all. She stresses that we'll go at a pace that is comfortable.. if you want it all done fast fine.... if you want to take your time.... fine. She never once made me feel anyway but incredibly helped and guided. I'd recommend her tenfold.

My husband and I are nearing the completion of a new home from the ground up. I recently hired Melissa to help me with paint selections. I was also in the process of selecting tile for the bathrooms and mudroom when we started working together. Fortunately I got her input before making any final decisions. My initial choices would have been a mistake. With Melissa's help and guidance, I selected tile and paint colors that are current and stylish, all of which will ultimately enhance both the aesthetic and monetary value of my home. My only regret is not hiring Melissa earlier on during the planning stages because I did make some costly mistakes. She is talented and her pricing is very reasonable. As I said to my builder, she was worth every penny. He was thrilled because in assisting me with decisions, she helped move the construction process along. She also spent quite a bit of time with me via email, phone and text for which she does not charge. I give her 5 stars!!

I used Julia to design my living room bedroom and office. I could not have been happier with the experience. I had an idea of what I wanted but had no clue how to put it together. Julia put together colors, textures and schemes, all trending today's designs and created three breathtaking and functional rooms. I have several more spaces I need designed and I cannot wait to work with Julia again.

John Maciejowski is the ultimate, talented professional. We recently gutted and remodeled both a master and guest bathroom. John created the look we were going for and the bathrooms came out great. He listened to what we wanted, took us on store and factory tours to pick out the marble, granite, tile, fixtures, vanities and paint colors. Everything fits together so perfectly. We love the outcome. John is very detailed and follows through on everything. You would be wise to pick John for your next remodeling or refurbishing project. We have worked with John 2 other times to refurbish our living room and bedrooms. The furniture, artwork and overall color schemes have always come out first rate!!

Bianca is a miracle worker. She came into my packed-to-the-rafters clothes closet and helped me weed out and organize. She met my frenzied energy with a peaceful calm. I consider myself organized and a constant purger. But sometimes more comes in than goes out, and sometimes I just cannot give away that BCBG shirt that I bought in 1996. Bianca walked through my closet piece by piece, and we ended up giving away three huge boxes of clothes (and I have since gone deeper with her support!). After the deep purge, Bianca organized the closest, color coded by type of article. All the shirts are together, coats, dresses. The result is amazing and has opened my eyes to the clarity and calm of organization.

Suzanne did an amazing job helping me decorate my home. She made it easy and fun. She immediately understood my sense of style and what I wanted to accomplish but just didn't know how to do it. She helped me from simple things like choosing paint color in my bathroom to fully decorating my family room. Everyone tells me how beautiful my house is now. I highly recommend her!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
