The J-Team has done 2 projects for me. A finished basement (1500 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2 bath) and a complete single family home (approx. 2000 sq ft). Both jobs were OUTSTANDING! Trustworthy, punctual, detailed and reasonably priced are words I would use to describe the J-Team. The only person I'll use.

Mr. Handyman is a passionate professional that performs above and beyond the bar. He responded immediately with a rough quote and came out to our home to complete an on-site estimate, paying attention to the details of the scope of work requested. He also identified some areas that we were unaware of which showed us he knew what he was doing. We decided to choose Mr. Handyman and we are very happy with our decision. Our project, which consisted of framing and installing drywall, had a tight schedule, yet Mr. Handyman and his crew were committed to completing the job. They were timely arrivers and good with communication as they updated us daily on progress. The completed outcome of the project was satisfactory and professionally done as we asked for. These guys are dedicated workers and we hope to have more projects with them in the future when new funds become available because they DO IT ALL!

Chun-Fa helped us design our next kitchen. He listened to our ideas and help translate them into a design that reflected what was most important to us. Plans and drawings were very detailed and he helped us withe some baseline pricing at manufacturers and gave us a good education on how to proceed. A good experience all around.

Dawn was a delight. She read our style and designed something that totally complimented our home and our family. She came to our home, measured, brought samples, met me on my time and had subcontractors for painting etc that were reliable and pretty darn amazing. She delivered on time and on budget and I am happy to call her a friend. Highly recommend!!!

I was totally not familiar with decorating a house so I called Kerry. She came over and when I told her what I wanted she worked with me and showed me how things would look good in certain places and what colors went good together. She took my ideas and went to a lot of paint stores until she found something she thought I might like and she was right. She was very professional, easy to work with and great and was very reasonable with her pricing. I would recommend her to everyone I know. Thank you Kerry for everything.

Amy was great to work with and helped us to navigate a lot of decor decisions as we redecorated the first floor of our home in Arlington, VA. She provided us advice on how to best redo the living and dining rooms, as well as the kitchen -- which included new countertops and a very unique backsplash. She helped us troubleshoot situations that arose with delivery issues and streamlined communication between us and the subcontractors working on all of the projects in our home. In terms of timeline, we initially met with Amy in April, and the job was 95% complete by the end of August, with some furniture deliveries still pending. She did a great job pushing us out of our comfort zone on colors, textures, and decor, and we are extremely pleased with the result. We also appreciated her willingness to meet with us on weekends or evenings since our working schedules do not offer much flexibilty for weekday discussions. She was also able to combine a mix of high-end pieces and low-cost accents in such a way that blended a lot of style into a unique space. Two things that could improve next time would be to get more proctive, regular communciations on projects underway and establishing more concrete budgetary limits in the beginning of the discussions rather than once the project was underway. Having said that, we would certainly use Amy again and feel like our money was well-spent. We love our new first floor and have received many compliments on it as well.

I needed stairway railings installed to help me access basement and second floor after hip replacement surgery. This company did excellent work in satisfying the need. The design and installation were flawless. I will have them back to change the original builder supply rails as well. I am more than pleased. The company's owner while working for a home improvement company installed a deck for me some 10 years ago. He supervised the workers and the project was completed on time with no extra costs. People who see his work frequently lcomment with praise even after this length of time. Again I am more than pleased. I would recommend this gentlemen and his company to friends and neighbors without hesitation

Initially my husband and I spoke with 3 different interior designers, ultimately we decided to go with Lauren. We were nervous about hiring the right designer but Lauren really put our minds at ease. She is professional, knowledgeable and innovative. She really took the time to explain her process and answer my many questions. Throughout the process, Lauren communicated and was respectful of our budget. I witnessed her negotiating as if she were spending her own money. I cannot put a dollar amount on how much we saved because of her connections with other professionals. Even if I could decorate my house like she did, I would have had to spend a lot more money. It's been 4 months since Lauren and her team redesigned our living area and kitchen and she has followed up to check on us and see how we are functioning in this space. It is so beautiful and comfortable for my husband and I. I have referred Lauren to friends and my Sister in Law who are also happy clients of hers. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

I contacted 2216 Real Estate Group while I was in the process of purchasing my new home. I knew I needed a general contractor to do some work on the house I was about to purchase. They sent a general contractor to the house to look at the scope of work I needed done and give me an estimate. Once I settled on the house and had the keys in hand, the contractor begun work the very next day! This company is very responsive and professional. I am so happy with the work they did. They exceeded my expectations and they completed the job in the timeframe they told me they would. They remodeled and designed my bathrooms, laid new flooring on my main level, painted my entire house and added a new bedroom to my upstairs den area. I would definitely use them again and refer them to anyone looking for a contractor no matter how big or small the job is.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
