Dave and the two movers were great. Dave called several times throughout the day to check in and make sure everything was going well. The move-in was tricky offering only a small elevator, but the guys made it all work. I will definitely reach out to Your Friends and a Truck for my next move.

I had a great experience working with Lewis Piano Movers. I sent an inquiry a few months ago, but due to delays in shipping, my piano only arrived today. Once I received my piano delivery date, I notified them and they came on very short notice! They are careful about their arrival time and treated my piano as their own. They unboxed the piano and put it back together efficiently and without scratches or drops even though it's a really huge and heavy concert grand Kawaii Rx-3........ I am thankful for having them move my one and only piano, which I've owned for over a decade. In addition to their excellent work, I feel their rates were also very fair. I would definitely recommend them to anyone and for my own future use. Keep up the good works guys!!!

I can't say enough how pleased I was with the work these guys completed. They took care of all of my household belongings with not so much as a scratch on any of my furniture or in both my previous home and my new home. I am a true believer in quality service and A-1 movers brought there a game. I will post this good review on all the sites I can for A-1 movers! I have also referred them to my sister who is moving in May. Kudos guys 5 stars is truly not enough. GREAT JOB!!!!!

I found Smart Moving on Thumbtack. Their response times are quick and they were easy to work with from beginning to end! None of my furniture or belongings went missing or were damaged during the move, save for a cosmetic scratch on a vanity that can be easily rubbed/polished out. The movers were kind and never stopped working! They were upfront about things (like wrapping and packing) that would eat up more time so there were no surprises about the amount of time and money the move would take. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that it may be best to pay in cash. Using a card will require a 3% service fee... It's a negligent amount, but it is good to know beforehand! No personal checks either. Thank you, Sam, Smart Moving, and the awesome movers!

FANTASTIC! WOULD USE AGAIN AND AGAIN. (#&$)#! Bekins is the worst. My Bekins A-1 movers, 1511 Farm Creek Dr, VA 703-491-1512 were absolute merd! I was told they couldn't get my couch to the 2nd floor due to it being too large. I called Charlies and they were to move it up and over the 2nd floor balcony. They immediate got it up the stairs with only two of them and no scratches! Very professional. I wish I used them instead of Bekins!!!!!

Overall experience was fantastic. Crew was professional and planned well. The leader of the crew was exceptional and clearly outlined the move process by explaining my responsibilities (Which was to basically sign, sit back, watch, answer questions when needed) as well as his and his team's, and the day could not have gone smoother! Rose is a pleasure to work with and takes enormous pride in her business. GNVL are not the least expensive of all of the movers you may quote, but there is a reason why. I'd pay a reasonable premium for professionals like this any day!

I hired Tim to help me move a 1 BR apartment. At first I was hesitant, since his quote mentioned "up to 3 people" - but he ended up showing up by himself. Apparently, the people he usually works with cancelled him last minute. However, this was no trouble for Tim, as he handled all my belongings with great care (wrapped them with quilts and shrink wrap), and had no trouble loading everything into the truck. As our time window to move was shrinking, Tim realized he needed another set of hands, so he went and hired someone to help him at his expense while respecting the lowered quote he had given me (since the other movers didn't show up). I really appreciated Tim's integrity and how careful he was with my stuff - I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again, as I know he'll do a great job, no matter the circumstances.

Absolutely EXCELLENT service. The movers were extremely polite, prompt, an even went as far as taking the hinges off of my door to make sure that my sofa fit into my new space. I won’t be contacting anyone else for my next move but them.

The movers arrived ahead of time, and were walking up to ring my bell at exactly 4:30 p.m., the agreed upon time. They were careful with all items; arranged the items in the basement neatly, devised a clever way to move a bulky item through the basement entry instead down the stairs, and helped arrange other items for discard. They went to work at once and completed the job in 90 minutes. Absolutely recommend!!!

We had to move apartment contents for two people to a new apartment about 1/2 mile away. OSSL was responsive and easy to schedule by email. Movers showed up on time, were very courteous and professional. Completed the move in about 3 hours. Everything went well and the cost was very reasonable. I would definitely use these guys again. Great job!

Moving with them from Virginia to Florida was one awesome, carefully planned and professional experience. The company helped me do this with their hardworking and skilful movers who did the entire job in week and a half. Thanks to their organized work I was moved in such a short time. The company offers good prices. I am in general very content with the outcome and with the reasonable price I was charged with.

My two movers showed up and gave 100% the entire time they were there! Would definitely recommend this company to my friends. The only negative I have is that on Thumbtack and my responses the price states $89 and yet when I went to website is say $99. When I asked about it, I was told that the price they quoted was wrong and they still charged me the $99. They should either change the price on here or honor the price they advertised.

I contacted them for a fast quote... a guy responded to me right away!!! The movers were prompt, professional and efficient with getting my items loaded on the truck in no time. The elevator stopped working but they kept going using the stairs without a fuss. This was a small job; and I needed a company willing to do the work without charging me an absorbent amount, and they were fair with negotiating. I’m very, very impressed and will be referring them to my family and friends.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
