We own a real estate company and are so satisfied that we left Eds guys a tremendous tip because of their effort in making sure that the property was in the best presentable position for us to list it on the market. There were several phases to this project which concluded the the trash removal and cleansing/\cleaning of the building. First we had EBRR handle some mold that needed to be removed and treatment of the air for the previous tenant. Then it was the outside area that needed to be cleaned of all the debris. We couldn't believe the short time span which all this work was completed and the price was not able to beaten by any other contractors in the area. Mr.Ed goes and does anything to make sure the client is satisfied being us! Always answers the phone and couldn't ask for more pleasurable experience.

Came within 24 hours to look at our refrigerator with malfunctioning water dispenser. Repairman seemed very rushed but worked to diagnose the issue. He recommended we have plumbing work done before he could fix the water dispenser, but the estimate for repair seemed to high to me without a guarantee that replacing the parts would actually fix the problem since the rest of the fridge was functioning.

Troy was very prompt and quick to assess the problem with my air conditioner unit. It had frozen up the day before but then it came back on. He thoroughly inspected everything and determined it simply needed cleaning. Although its quite an old unit he assured me everything was fine and it didn't need to be replaced. A very competent and honest professional! Highly recommended.

Logan was extremely professional in diagnosing the issue with our air conditioning, after several others had given us misinformation. Tristan ended up replacing our very old system at a very reasonable price and the crew were extremely quick and efficient at installing it. Tristan even went out of his way to make a follow up visit on Mothers Day to help us out with a faulty thermostat. We can't fault the standard of service and friendly professionalism in any way - we would certainly call on Logan / Tristan again and recommend them fully to others.

These guys were great! Our air conditioner broke in the middle of a heatwave and they came out immediately and worked until 9pm to resolve the problem, even taking a trip back to their office to get a part. They were professional, courteous, and very helpful. I highly recommend them.

It was a positive experience from beginning to end. Andrew Hammett said he would come out on the very day we called him--which he did. to do a diagnostic on our air conditioner. Within a matter of minutes, he told my husband what the problem was. He had the part on his truck and was able to fix the problem. He was able to replace the part in no time. The price was reasonable. Andrew was personable and professional. We would hire him again without hesitation. Anne and Jim McMenamin Davidsonville, MD

HVAC Plus was excellent - our air conditioning went out the Friday before a holiday weekend, and HVAC Plus was the only company willing to come out Saturday (and they came out within an hour of contacting them). They got the air conditioner fixed and running again within a couple of hours at a very reasonable cost under the circumstances. Highly recommend and will use again.

We actually hired Nick to install a double wall oven. He was knowledgeable and did an outstanding job on installing it. I was very pleased as we thought we were going to have to cut the cabinet but he informed us that we did not have to and educated us on the difference between the opening for a double wall oven and microwave/oven. Since he is an electrician my husband gave him an extra job and requested that he mount five (5) and being very picky, my husband also wanted them on certain walls within each of the areas. I must say that Nick delivered his requests to do so, but the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is Nick put in the contract that there may be small drywall damage as a result of mounting these TVs and not knowing what is behind the wall and Liability of damage would be on the owner. However when I reviewed the job, there were very large pieces cut out of the wall in several different areas and there was no warning to my husband regarding the large amount of drywall damage to the walls. We had just had the walls painted and drywall damaged fixed to those walls and now will need to pay additional money to get them fixed and painted again. In Nick's defense though, he did save us money by not having to go to pay Best Buy for the installation as we did have 5 TVs to mount, it would have cost us well over a $1000k. Sometimes going that extra mile though to communicate any issues beforehand with your customer can make the difference between a happy customer and an upset one. I was happy the TVs were hung but upset over my wall. The Air Force has a saying "Excellence in all you do!" Nick is very good, just need to apply a little excellence to it...

When our air conditioner went out, we braced ourselves for the worst. This never went well in the past, so I thought I would give Thumbtack a try as it was recommended to me by a friend. I plugged in the request and, within about a minute, we got a response from Nexgen Home Services. The message said they were available for a call "right now" so I took them up on it. Herb was very knowledgeable and showed up at our door, as promised, early the next morning. Not only did he fix the problem in a very timely manner, but we are also going to be using his services for our semi-annual maintenance check-ups. I would recommend Herb and this company most highly. They did a terrific job, explained everything along the way in layman’s terms, and made the whole experience almost painless. We will definitely be using them again and we give them the highest rating.

I spoke to Jon about my pilot light on my water heater that kept going out. Since I dicovered the water heater should not be in a bathroom ( which voided my warranty), he explained why and since it is in a small closet suggested I leave the door open for the air to circulate! This light was going out everyday for the last 3 days. Following Jon's advice the pilot light has stayed lit! I didn't hire him for now, but will definitely contact him for jobs in the future! Thank you so much for your advice Jon, and saving me money!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
