Chef and his team were excellent. Our event was not a typical event and he coped with it superbly. I do the same event every year and the amount of rave reviews from my guests about the food and the service was unprecedented. I will not hesitate to book chef in again or to recommend him and his team.

Maribel and Noel of Top of the City Catering catered our wedding on July 28th, 2018. We were both absolutely blown away by everything that they did. We looked at many different caterers but met with Maribel and Noel for a tasting because they offered the best value. We discovered that the food was absolutely delicious and Maribel and Noel were lovely to work with. At the wedding everyone raved about the food. But it wasn't just the food! Their presentation of the main course buffet, the desert buffet and even the bar decor was gorgeous. Really creative! The attention to detail was amazing. Maribel handled all the details for the table settings and the tables looked like a dream. They were perfect for the venue. During the wedding the service was flawless. Everyone was so kind to us, keeping us in Margaritas, Manhattans, food and wine all night long. They made sure we had everything we needed. We had so much fun! Their servers extended that level of service to all our guests. Believe me, our family and friends have all commented on how wonderful they were in every way. We feel very lucky that we found Maribel and Noel. We would recommend Top of the City Catering to everyone for any event! We are so grateful to them. They gave our night the magic that we were hoping for.

I hired Chef Chris to cook dinner for my family and a few friends over Labor Day weekend. I really did not know what to expect because this was the first time I had ever met Chris. He was just wonderful and the entire evening was flawless. The first surprise came when Chris told me that he brought his own table linens and dishes. This was a huge benefit because after the evening was over the kitchen was spotless (I think he even took his trash home) and I did not even have to wash napkins and placemats the next day. He was very friendly, engaging, and just a delight to have in our home. All of the dishes he prepared were just delicious and beautifully presented. What a treat to sit in my own dining room with my family and friends and not have to get up and down to serve plates, clear dishes, or refill glasses. I was extremely pleased with everything and strongly recommend Chef Chris for your next dinner party.

Chef Jackie catered a breakfast in our home the morning after our son's bar mitzvah. She delivered exactly as promised, honored our dietary restrictions, and our guests specifically commented on the many good quiches she made. The only note I would make is that for coffee service, she only needed to bring regular flavored coffee and regular milk/cream, which we could have advised on if asked.

I genuinely can’t say enough good things about this business. I hired AC Catering for two events I held in June and July 2017. Everything was excellent! I was beyond happy with everything from the food, to the services, to the people I interacted with during the planning phase and the actual events. This small, family owned business actually exceeded my expectations. They have an extensive menu to choose from which allowed me to tailor both events’ meals appropriately. The pricing was great and the amount of food I received was more than enough. AC Catering received many compliments for the quality of their food at both of my events. I took a risk and hired them without having tasted any of their food, but I have to say there was no need for worry. The food was also delicious! Both my guests and I enjoyed every bite. The serve and clean up service was also top notch. George Sullivan and his staff were extremely attentive to my needs during my banquet. They helped to ensure that the dinner ran smoothly, and cleanup was quick and efficient. I can't leave this review without noting that it was a great pleasure working with George Sullivan (principal owner/operator) when coordinating my needs. He was very responsive to the myriad of questions I had, extremely flexible as I proposed changes for my event, and just an extremely nice guy. I am so glad I found this business. I will definitely be using AC Catering if I have any catering needs in the future.

I hired Esther to cater a dinner party to celebrate our Mom's 80th birthday. From the first encounter, Esther was very accommodating. We were expecting 50 guests, some with food allergies ranging from nuts to shell fish. Esther assured me that she would create a menu that would be elegant and delicious. And did she deliver! The event took place on 12/31/2016. The food was amazing! She sent her employee, Crystal, to handle the event. From the moment Crystal arrived until the moment she left, she went above and beyond, and made the evening a huge success! Crystal was warm and professional, and worked tirelessly to provide us with outstanding service. We were so impressed with this amazing woman, we had to give her a round of applause before she left. Thank you, Epicurean Nutrition, for making our event a HUGE success. We will definitely call you again for our next event. Happy New Year!!

Chef Niki catered my promotion dinner at my firehouse. I appreciated how I was able to view and sign the contract online and pay through a cash app. However, I was surprised to pay in full prior to delivery of service but I admit to being naive about the process of catering an event. Nikki was fair in price. The amount of food was very generous. The food was delish and the guys are still talking about how tasty it was. I only gave four and not five stars due to the late arrival of food. (40mins after agreed time.) Overall, I would recommend Chef Nikki to cater future events.

Everything about our experience with Sandra and her staff was superb. We had a 50th wedding anniversary buffet dinner with a Hawaiian theme for 26 family and friends. Her creativity, responsiveness and attention to detail was evident in all phases of the day and evening. Our guests raved about the menu and the ladies who prepared and served the meal. When they left everything was cleaned up superbly. We highly recommend Creative Visions !

I worked with Gabriela to select wines for my wedding. It was a small, intimate dinner for 30 and almost all the guests know good food and good wine. Gabriela did a great job of making sure that the wines we selected went well with all our courses. She was knowledgeable, responsive, and very approachable. Sometimes wine people can be a little snooty but Gabriela was very down to earth and was able to explain the wines she chose and why. I would choose her again if I ever had a similar party.

It is my pleasure to offer this recommendation to Chef Ronald Cager Jr. I had the fortune to employ him for a romantic “Just Because” dinner for my husband and I. He and his business associate worked with me to understand my preferences. My expectations were achieved in taste and presentation. Chef Cager’s client centered approach was greatly appreciated. It is my sincerest hope to palate his future creations and cuisines. Until that time presents itself, I wish him much success.

I really wish I could give him more than five stars. Deshawn is more than exceptional. He was super professional. This being my first time planning a party of this magnitude, he helped me every step of the way. He created a wonderful menu including appitzers and everything was so delicious. In fact the food was so good that guests of the party did actively seek me out to get his information. His food was the highlight of the event. I'm so blessed to have found such a talented chef to cater my party. He's super professional, talented, punctual, and reasonably priced. I will definitely be utilizing his services for all of my future catering needs. Ps. His greens are the best I've ever had..

Absolutely impressed with the service provided by Classic Catering! I needed a catering company for a last minute event I hosted and Classic Catering was recommended by a colleague. I called and spoke with Sandy, who understood exactly what I was looking for and needed for my event. She was able to work out the details and arrangements for my party and was a pleasure to work with. I can definitely see myself using their service for future events.

Culinary Chick provided dinner for my father’s 86th birthday. After his first bite he said and I quote “now this lady knows how to cook!”. We enjoyed every bit of our Italian dinner and fun was had by all! I will definitely use her for future occasions.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
