Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Deylan and his partner Larry are professional in tile and base molding installation. They finished tiling my large basement room floor and leveled it with clips and wedges, and finished it where the drywall and tile edges meet with old/new base moldings, a T- molding at the room entrance, and a ¼ round molding at the bathroom threshold entrance. Nice clean up when done too. Also Deylan removed and replaced [R&R] my upstairs kitchen nook area cracked tile at the air vent and loose tiles that I identified with orange stickers and he even found a few more loose tiles to R&R. I would consider them for future projects and recommend them to my friends and relatives as well.

Tom just finished up a tile backsplash for us and he did beautiful work. We had him out for an estimate and he was very thorough asking us what we wanted and even made some suggestions. We were very satisfied with the pricing he gave and we were eager to ge started. Tom showed up on time on the arranged tile install day. He really impressed us with the time he took to get things right. He takes pride in his work and it shows. The wall looks great, the tiles placement looks great and everything is lined up nicely. Tom was neat while he worked and he spent more time than we expected to ensure everything was clean when he was done. He had us check the work at several points to ensure we did not have any issue… which we didn’t. What we truly appreciated was the extra things Tom did like caulking before tiling (there were gaps between counter and wall), hanging up edging on corner of wall where tile started, fixing up wall that had imperfections in it, and putting extra row of tile behind slide-in stove so you cannot see any of the wall. He was very efficient with the tile cuts and we ended up with more tile leftover than we planned. We highly recommend Tom’s work and we will keep his number and use him for our future tile/mason related work.

Chuck and his team did a very big tile job for my nails salon (floors, walls, manicure bars, reception ,and columns ) and they all turned out amazing. Chuck and his team put a lot of after hours into my salon, they worked hard sometimes till 9:00 pm. Most important of all to me is that they are very professional , on time , and does a fantastic job without complaining. Also at very reasonable price consider how big the job was ( over 4,000 sq. ft of tiles). I would definitely hire American Home Improvements again.

I hired Allor Contracting to install a backsplash in my kitchen. Wasn't a large job, two walls totaling about 20 sq ft in total. Upon request to speak to them about the job, I received a call within 24 hours from Mike, the owner of the company, asking for more specifics about the job. Within 3 days, we had ironed out specifics and agreed upon date. Mike and his brother John showed up on time, and had the job completed in one day (which I didn't know could be done)! Having two men surely helped, but I was thoroughly impressed with their speed! I dropped off two stars for a few reasons: 1) Silicone/caulk was not laid between the bottom of the tile and the countertop, nor between the top of the tile and the bottom of the cabinet. I have since done this myself. 2) Spacers were not used between the sheets of tile. While not hugely noticeable, especially from a distance, I can notice when upclose. 3) The clean-up of leftover grout/mortar was lacking. After the job was complete, I scrubbed the bottom of the cabinets to get off several moderately-sized chunks, and had to clean all switches and outlets. One large complement, however. I was at a loss of where to stop the tile by a light switch. Mike and John tossed around ideas and eventually came up with a satisfying plan. Overall, I'm happy I hired Allor Contracting, especially for the price point; I had purchased all supplies in an attempt to do this myself. Once I returned everything, I only spent $50 more by hiring Allor! Thank you Mike and John!

Connor was very easy to work with. Very professional, did a great job & always on time. He tiled two bathroom floors, painted & repaired bathrooms, painted cupboard in one bathroom & repaired & painted bedroom ceiling. He also hung all by towel bars, light plates etc. My husband is not handy at all so it was much appreciated. “Love My Bathrooms”. Reasonable also.

I had a very poor experience. I hired Jacob to do the work. He was the first to respond when I posted the project and he agreed to price match. The day prior to our scheduled appointment, Jacob contacted me and advised that his brother, Jonny, would now be performing the work. Jacob assured me that his brother was skilled and experienced and alleviated my concerns. Jonny showed up for the job and after beginning the job informed me that he did not think that I would be happy with the quality of the work because the glass tile that I purchased was difficult to work with. He saw that it was glass tile before he started the work and gave me no such warning. Ultimately, we agreed to remove the small amount already applied and he recommended the type of tile to purchase and where to purchase from. We agreed that he would return to do the job the following week. The day prior, I reached out to confirm our appointment and Jonny then advised me that the job was being handed off yet again. I responded by asking questions and expressing concerns about the unknown third party. Rather than simply addressing my concerns and assuring me of the skill and experience of the person (like his brother had done), Jonny responded by accusing me of being difficult and hard to work with and cancelled the job! I've never dealt with a more immature and unprofessional person. Paying customers have a right to ask questions and express concerns. I would NOT recommend hiring this company unless working directly with Jacob who was very professional and exhibiting outstanding customer contact skills.
