Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Bill was great! He was friendly and did great work! I’m so pleased with our new kitchen tile! I’d hire him again! I still have to get my shelves hung and add some finishing touches, but here’s a pic of the tile.

Tiled kitchen backsplash. Mr. Stelma was on time for both his initial job assessment and the day of the installation. He was willing to make changes as requested. He left the work area neat and clean when finished. He was both professional and personable. I would recommend him if you need tile work.

Project: Remove old drywall from a plastic tub surround, install cement board and install new tile for tub surround. Bobby did an awesome job on my tile project. He has a busy schedule but he was able to squeeze my small project in between a couple other projects he had going on. You can tell he takes pride in his work and he did a phenomenal job changing my bath tub from a plastic tub surround to a tiled surround. The tile looks great and he completed the surround much faster than I could've expected. Not only would I not hesitate to use him again, I am already thinking about what other tile projects I'd like to get done around my house that I can have him do. I have uploaded a few photos. Unfortunately I do not have a photo of the finished project with grout and cleaned up but maybe I can add that later. It looks great!! Thank you Bobby!

Ended up doing this myself. Poor communication from this contractor from day one. Clearly stated I only wanted tile and grout done, yet quoted me on tub install and then got upset about me installing cement board (he was still going to get paid the same to just do the tile and grout). Showed up late the day of starting, then acted wholly unprofessional when I informed him I wouldn't be utilizing his services saying "I didn't want to do it anyway." Uncertain of whether not any license is carried and never even mentioned a contract (which should have been my first sign).

Our project was to build a large two person shower which included doing all the prep work for new water lines and relocating the drain and installing a new shower pan which had to be customized as the shower was much larger than a standard size. The floor was then finished with travertine mosaic tile and the walls from floor to ceiling with ceramic tile with a decorative strip inlayed. All the work was done to a high quality standard with very good attention to detail. He went the extra mile to find materials that would last longer and do a better job of waterproofing the sub structures than is usually used for such installations. We are very happy with his work and will gladly use him again for future projects.

Grooters Builders was hired to install a kitchen backsplash. I was immediately impressed with the owner, Randy, and his take charge attitude. He helped me select the right materials and followed through to completion. The workmanship as you can see is at the highest level. I highly recommend Grooters Builders for tile work, and other contractor specialties. I received great value in addition to an incredible timeframe of five days, from the initial contact to the final cleanup. Yes Grooters Builders left no mess. This contractor is truly unique.
