Very professional. Initial presentation was great and informative. Roof was started some time after I left for work (6:30am) and was finished and cleaned up before I even got home at around 4pm. It’s been over a year since the work was done and I still look at my roof every time I come home. Great job.

Alex and AP Carpentry were outstanding! I got hooked up with AP carpentry through thumbtack to do the siding on my garage and they exceeded my expectations. First and foremost, Alex was responsive and timely in his communication. He called and texted back, showed up on time, and finished the job when he said he would. Secondly, they went out of their way to do things over and above. One example; My garage has a TV mount, speakers, and some lighting hanging on the outside and they took that into consideration and put in special pieces I could remount to once they were done. I didn't know it was an option, but I didn't have to know, they knew what was right and make it great. Lastly, while I saw they were doing the metal trim around the garage windows I asked them if they could fix a window on the house that had got dinged up. They remembered to take care of it even after a quick passing conversation and the cost was minimal. I would recommend AP carpentry to anyone who needs siding, roofing, etc. Their communication, skills/knowledge, and price make them a GREAT contractor to know.

S&S Roofing arrived when they said they would. They gave us an estimate, explained what they were going to do and got it done. They had to put a new overlay on part of the roof and they were on the roof in freezing cold weather as it was snowing. They did a fantastic job! They kept us informed as to what they were doing and were very professional and courteous. The roof looks great and my kitchen ceiling is no longer leaking!

We contacted 4 roofing companies to compare products and prices, and it took us over a month to make a decision. After a referral from our neighbors and Brian's patience, quality product and professionalism we chose Brimar Exteriors. The roof was torn off and replaced the same day, and the employees were courteous and cleaned up very thoroughly. Brian came back to make sure we were satisfied, and we are very happy with our new roof. The price of the new roof was surprisingly lower than the other companies like Mr Roof and Hansons. We felt that Brian really valued our business, and it was great to use a local company.

Prime Square Construction replaced my roof over 15 years ago. I have never had a leak or a shingle blow off. I consider this as "Prime" work at a "Square" price. The roof still looks beautiful. Photo taken June 2017. "Roof Raking" the snow from the roof is an important preventive maintenance technique that will help prevent ice dams. Prime Square Construction offers this service too.

Our roof was damaged in the last windstorm. Jason came out to quote the job the same day I put the request in. He completed the work two days later. Jason and his crew did a great job. I have already referred McBain Construction to my neighbor for his roof repairs and will not hesitate to refer them to others.

Ryan with Weather Vane impressed us with our first meeting with him because he is extremely thorough. His assessments and suggestions were more detailed than most (we had several other quotes) and we felt very comfortable with him as we headed into the job. It was obvious that Ryan takes this work to heart, he mentioned that each project he supervises is like a "work of art." Well, when it was all done, we can see why he says this. We LOVE our new metal roof! It looks fantastic and really made our whole house look better. The craftsmanship is top-notch and we had no issues. The discounts offered made the metal roof a possibility for us versus another shingle roof. We didn't want to deal with getting another shingle roof in 20 years. We highly-recommend Ryan with Weather Vane.

P & G Contracting recently did a basement remodel for us. We had done a lot of research on what we wanted, and had several proposals before going with Phil and his crew. He had built our deck last summer, and re-shingled our roof after the hail storm so we knew what his quality would be. Our basement was not a simple put up some 2x4s, drywall and a paint job. It required some extra imagination to re-route some plumbing, put in a multi-level stairwell, and improved our heating and cooling. We also converted our egress window into a sturdy brick and cement exit including a bilco door. Phil is very considerate to the work site, and treats it like it is his own house. We are very pleased.

The project manager Josh Winters was sooo nice and professional. He went up on the roof, showed me an actual video of my roof and explained in great detail what needed to be done. He explained it could possibly be a 2 day job. The crew started early morning and finished in the evening. They were very professional as well. At one point I was having an issue with the color of the shingle and Josh and Austin (production team) addressed my concerns almost immediately. Josh even came to my home the next morning to make sure I was happy with the work. I highly recommend this company!

Atex Builders were very professional and easy to work with. They went above and beyond helping us. They were even able to get my roof covered under an insurance claim, which saved us thousands that would've come out of our pocket otherwise.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
