Wow. It is not always that a business makes your life easier - but Bruce and his team really made my backsplash project simple and painless. Bruce was flexible enough to come to my home, review my project, and provide a reasonable estimate within 48 hours of my posting on Thumbtack. They came back the next week and completed the project while my boyfriend and I were on vacation - we were so happy to find that they worked very cleanly, returned the key as instructed and the backsplash looks GREAT. Would definitely hire again. Thank you Apex!!!

If you are looking for help decorating your house look no further. Stacy is your gal. I refer to her to my friends as the Joanna Gains of MSP for rustic chic (although she can do any aesthetic you are dreaming of)! I hired her to help me furnish and decorate my new construction home. She was always very attentive and had a wonderful game plan to help me tackle such a huge task. She came over and measured my home and took pictures. She then gave me a 3D rendering of my home decorated! It was STUNNING. We then went on several shopping trips to buy the large pieces together. Later on we went on trips to find the perfect accessories at places an interior designer would only know about! Stacy was a great listener and was flexible if any pieces didnt speak to me. She was happy to point out other options that would look just as nice. Finally, Stacy got some amazing designer discounts at the large box stores. On the shopping front Stacy is happy to do as little or as much as you need! She can go with you or tell you what to find, whatever your preference. She is also a master stager and thriftstore expert too! Stacy not only does typical furniture placement, shopping, and decorating...she is also an architect who can make a ton of the creative projects she proposes in your home for you. You don't have to hire yet another person. Wonder woman I tell you!!! Stacy made us a custom mud room bench built in HERSELF. She used reclaimed wood from all over the state and from barns! She also made us a custom chalkboard wall. Stacy's daughter took the pictures for our collage wall that will line our steps, they are the things of dreams! Stacy also picked out a wonderful reclaimed wood wall paper for above the fireplace that is unlike anything I have ever seen. To sum up it Stacy is a joy to work with, she is a friend at this point. She can literally do it all. She is flexible on all counts and can help you as little or as much as you like at a very fair price point. If you haven't already, just hire stay. You won't regret it. -Tory

Angie and her team are outstanding! Being able to move everything out of our home and having her stage it to look beautiful took so much stress out of our lives. She was able to take a split level home where the kitchen and living room where separated and make the entire space feel so much more open as your eye was guided to the beautiful interior throughout. She brought a special touch by adding pieces that really resonated with us – a thoughtful touch that made the experience even more special. In the numerous offer letters we received, prospective buyers commented on how lovely the home was, how well cared for, and how they were anxious to turn the corner into each room to see what was inside. Also, how it looked like many wonderful memories where made there and how they wanted to make their own in that special place. Angie’s designs where not only beautiful but made you feel like you could see yourself living there in a comfortable and inviting space. Since the proof is always in the pudding, we were floored by the number of offers we received and know that we received a much higher value on our home due to our decision to work with Angie and Orchestrated Living Design. Best decision we’ve made in a long time, and the relationship you’ll build with Angie is one you’ll treasure. Very grateful customers. Thanks so much! Shawna Stoltenberg

Jennifer was a delight to have in our home during our painting project. I loved the colors she helped me choose, and would recommend her to anyone in need of painting services. She pays great attention to detail, and was very careful with our new hard wood floors we just had put in. She painted/enameled all our trim on first floor and painted the walls. Thanks again, Jennifer, looking forward to working with you again for future projects!

After pulling the carpet to expose hardwood floors, we wanted a fresh look in our living room. We asked Jenna for some suggestions on wall color and general decor. We planned on keeping some of the wall art already decorating the room, so Jenna pulled a color from the artwork and presented us with some color options. We knew there would be some work involved, including stripping one wall of 20-plus-year wallpaper and covering a darker color to lighten the room. Nevertheless, the end result was/is fabulous! Jenna pointed us in the right direction and we couldn’t be happier. Jenna even suggested the brand of paint to use. It was so good I’ll use it for all future interior paint jobs (sorry, no product endorsement here; you’ll have to ask Jenna).

Erica is a very talented designer, but what sets her apart from the rest is her personality, style, flexibility, and ability to think outside the box. All of the designers we met with prior to meeting Erica made me feel intimidated to express my ideas and embarrassed about my "low" budget (which was $10,000 - to me, a lot of money; to them, not nearly enough to get anything done). Erica took the time to get to know me, my home, my goals for design, and my priorities; and she truly cared about each of them. One of our projects was far more difficult, time-consuming, and expensive than we had anticipated, and she was persistent and determined to find an affordable and aesthetic alternative solution - and she did it! Her approach to each room in our house made the entire process far less overwhelming than had we attempted it on our own. And she clearly wanted us to have fun with the process, which was always appreciated. She was never pushy with timelines or purchases, but always kept us on track for progress. Erica was willing to meet with us on weekends, evenings, and by phone an email; very accessible. My husband and I are very pleased with our results, and Erica has been a pleasure to work with! Thank you, Erica!

Jason appreciated my very tight space and my grand vision of what I wanted to accomplish in my 1912 home. He kept me abreast of options I knew nothing about, while respecting the limits of my budget and the constraints of my old house. It looks so beautiful today.

Tani listens well. She finds solutions and makes suggestions that created just the look and feel I hoped for. She presented me with two room decor designs from which I could choose, and I loved them both! She has never steered me wrong. I loved what she selected for our home, from tile to lighting, color, wallpaper, furniture and art and we get many compliments from others. Tani is flexible, confident and efficient and finds beautiful things to make a beautiful space.

      About

I am a Minneapolis based wardrobe and home stylist or a "life stylist." I have been working as an interior designer/decorator for many years, and I have studied fashion literally since I was in elementary school. I became a personal stylist when everywhere I went, people/friends/strangers would stop me and say, "I love your... or where did you get that...?" I am always the first person my friends or friends of friends will contact when they are looking for something to wear for a special occasion or redecorating their home. I am always the first person whom people call to help them find a wardrobe for that two-week trip to Paris or a job interview in corporate America. I am always the first person people contact if they are having a baby and need to decorate/design a dream nursery or help their husband revamp their entire wardrobe. I am always the first person people contact if they are looking to sell their home and need to stage it or are just looking for some fun things to wear through their pregnancy. Let me help you "style your life."

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
