Aaron was very responsive for a project that I needed to be done quickly. We were able to schedule something right away. He is also trustworthy. Because I was out of town at the time of the project, I gave him the garage code to the location. While painting, he kept me updated via text messages and sent me pictures of the final result. The project included painting a yellow/orange kitchen/dining room to a more neutral color and adding a layer of white paint to some window and stairs trim. I was quite happy with his work and would hire him again in a heartbeat.

Needed new soffit board to replace rotting boards above bay window, that also contained a wasp nest or two. He also cleaned rain gutters. Things he did that were great: 1) showed up for initial meeting and to give estimate ON TIME! 2) performed beautiful work over bay window with new soffit boards complete with paint job; and removed wasps nest, 3) reasonably priced for this single-income household, 4) felt totally comfortable with him and appreciated his gracious attitude towards me as a female client. Was not condescending (which is my experience with a few contractors in the past). Will definitely ask him to return to help with more "fixer-upper" jobs as well as some more complex renovations.

Barry repaired a kitchen window in my home. In spite of it being a seventeen year old window and challenging to get the correct part, he was very professional and did not vary from his first estimate to get the job done. I would reach out to him again and highly recommend Barry to others.

Joe put in four metal storm windows for me. When a couple were too wide for the openings - no biggy - He was able to cut them down on the spot. And I hit him up for a couple other little projects that had been nagging at me too! I will definitely call Joe again next time I need some handiwork done!

It was a very good experience working with Jam Handyman on my small condominium’s masonry work. We had a brick archway above an exterior window removed and replaced. He was prompt in assessing the work, providing a bid, scheduling the project, and doing the work. Additionally, he completed the work with some time to spare so did a few extra tuck-pointing areas around the building outside walls – all while coming in almost 10% under the original quote. If needed, we would gladly work with Jam and his team again!

Julio switched out some peeling linoleum on my kitchen floor last year to beautiful tiles that I picked out. It looks gorgeous now! He does expert work, and attends to the small details. I have an older house, and some of the windows need to be replaced. Several weeks ago, Julio installed replacement windows and built new frames for my kitchen windows, insulated them, and painted the trim to match. I can't believe how beautiful they look; I am so happy!

My experience with BARQ was great. While talking with Jim about possible windows to replace our broken one he was very informative about our choices, And what he would reccomend for us,And after talking to him me and my wife Cathy felt he steered us in the right direction with our choice of windows.During instalation of our window Jim and craig? were right on top of telling what was going on with what they were doing.only regret we wuold have is how long it took to get schedueled .But I do understand it was a custom window and may have taken longer to make.or it was insurance company dragging their feet.I would recomend barq anytime very proffesional salesmen and installers.

Initially, I contracted Kellington to repair a woodpecker hole in the chimney and replace some damaged siding. In the process, they found significant issues caused by years of water damage that was not properly repaired by the previous owners. Chuck and his sons worked diligently to identify the full scope of the problem and worked with me to develop a plan of action. In the end, a significant amount of work was required to completely and effectively address the problem. Although I was not happy about having to deal with this issue, after being in the house less than 3 years, Chuck and his sons (Ryan and Chad) did an excellent job on the repairs. They not only addressed the current issues but also put things in place to help ensure there is no future water damage in that area. See before and after pictures. We ended up removing the siding from the majority of the back of the house, repaired and/or replaced support beams, new windows and new flashing all, around, then new siding, etc. I am very satisfied with the work of Kellington Remodeling. Chuck, Ryan and Chad always responded to my questions and ensured I understood the work they were doing and why it was being done in that manner. I will definitely contract again.

Our window AC stopped working on a Friday of a steamy hot weekend. I submitted my job "after hours" on Friday and John replied quickly and came out Saturday morning to install our new unit. We are very pleased with the weekend service and with the actual work done. John was very friendly and easy to work with. I expect we'll be contracting him again.

The project was a siding replacement for house and garage. Half of the house is two floors. In total there was about 2400 square feet of floor. We used heavy duty vinyl siding. There were a lot of lights, doors, windows, corners, etc to work around. The crew did excellent work meeting these challanges. Additionally, we went with full metal cladding for all window & door trim as well as fascia, and veranda support structure. The metal cladding was formed on site and perfectly fit everything it was applied to. The crew was here at 7:00 am ready to start and worked till after 6:30 pm. Mr. Lessard was here most of the time when he wasn't retrieving additional materials that were needed as the work progressed. The result was a project that went smoothly from start to finish. It is now a year later and there have been no problems due to winter weather or spring storms. We are totally happy with the results and have no regrets for choosing to go with Tier1 Restoration.

Damian responded quickly to my request and came over the next day to check out the work involved in installing two storm doors. He also replaced a rotted threshold that took a considerable amount of finesse and patience to accomplish. All turned out well. Damian is personable and creative, and frequently asked for my perspective when troubleshooting an issue. Unhesitating recommendation!

We had an emergency with our rood looking like a hot air balloon at 11:00pm at night when we got home. It was a result of cross winds. Advanced exterior sent some one right out to keep the water from getting in and then put a tarp in place with repairs the next morning. they worked with the insurance adjuster and with in 4 days the new roof and all work was completed. They worked directly with insurance and eliminated that hassle. Also they cleaned up the yard, decks and all supplies like they had never been there. I would recommend Advanced Exteriors over and over again!

Garrett and company installed a basement egress window for me. Garrett was very responsive and worked with my schedule to get the job done quickly. It looks good from the outside and seems solidly installed. I was surprised that the interior portion around the window and the sill was left unfinished, but we never discussed it beforehand and given the very reasonable price he did the work for... it makes sense that it might not be a 'full finish' job. I'd definitely use them again if I need any more work that falls within their expertise.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
