Mark tutored my grandson whom will be entering the 2nd grade this fall. What I wanted my grandson to gain from the sessions was confidence that he could do any math problem ranging from two digits to 11 digits at his grade level. Mark not only exposed him to large number addition and subtraction but also multiplication and division. We were very pleased with the services received and will continue to use Freed Tutoring services.

Alex has a real talent for explaining concepts in a way that is heard and understood by my boys. He has taught them each various music lessons and music theory as well as tutoring for math and language. My boys say they feel smarter after their sessions with Alex. Thank you, Alex, for being conscientious and serious about tutoring.

Mark was my 5th grade teacher and was one of my favorite teachers. He really cares about individual kids. He saw I was more advanced than my peers and so he gave me the opportunity to learn about computer programming to give me a challenge and to fill up the extra time I had in class when I finished before everyone else. He really sees potential in everyone and helps you get there. Now I'm an attorney who negotiates software licenses so I'm grateful for the little intro to programming he gave me. I hope my kids can get teachers and tutors like him who will challenge them and inspire them to try hard things. He has my highest recommendation as an educator.

Laura has been working with my daughter since September and has done an EXCELLENT job! She is very easy to coordinate times with and flexible with last minute changes. She has helped my daughter to understand concepts and problems and has been an integral part of my daughter testing out of her Geometry class. I highly recommend Laura to anyone needing help in math. She is patient, skilled and able to "get through" to children to help them grasp the material.

Aaron Felty tutored me in Algebra when I was having trouble keeping up in class. He was extremely knowledgable, patient and personable. The light-hearted atmosphere of our sessions allowed for me to better understand the information without creating the distraction of stress. I don't believe I would've passed the class without his help.

I have a genuine love of It and Math which makes communicating these ideas to others more readily possible.

I am a Chinese Immersion school math teacher in Minneapolis and have a math degree from CUNY. I am familiar with children's development (lower school, middle school and more) academically, emotionally and socially.

I will teach your kids to read and write and help them be more confident and ready for school next year.

I effectively use analogies, stories, and hands-on learning methods to help get across the learning lessons. I am patient with students, committed to their success, and have worked with diverse groups of students - adult basic education, incarcerated, English Language Learners, parents of college students, high school and junior high school students.

We are a math learning center where students come two or more times a week to either catch up or get ahead in math. We have three locations: Champlin/Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove, and St. Louis Park/Edina.

I have several years of experience tutoring children of various ages, from preschoolers to young adults. My main area of expertise is Spanish, but I have also tutored English, algebra and geometry. I can help students with homework and test preparation and I also love to use creative activities and games. I have performed transcription and provided structure and organization for a special-needs client.

I have experience as an ESL teacher with the Minnesota Literacy Council. I have been teaching intermediate English since August 2013.

I tutor college-level math, English, electronics, psychology, communication, and many other technical classes. I specialize in tutoring math and English. I have experience tutoring 5 to 15-year-old kids, with my main experience teaching adults in higher education. I also give workshops on test anxiety and general anxiety to help people overcome their fears of tests and education in general. When I teach, I try to focus on complete comprehension in order for the student to understand all aspects of the problem. I also try to make it as simple as possible because I used to struggle myself with math, so I know first hand the benefits of simplifying it down as much as possible to make it easier to learn. One thing that students love about me is the fact that I will never give up on them. If I take on the challenge to teach, I don't care where they are at developmentally; they will learn it and be able to do it on their own.

I am very experienced, trustworthy, and professional. By having me care for their children, people are hiring an [almost] completely trained teacher! I promise to keep children safe, while providing a fun and stimulating environment while their parents are away. If parents are hiring me for tutoring, parents are certainly welcome to stay in the household.

!!We are cool and always try to help. Cool guys!!!

I have a license in K-6 elementary education, with an emphasis in 5 to 8 math. I believe in the academic potential of every child, and I desire to equip them with the skills and confidence to achieve it. I will work with students from grades 1 through 7 for reading and writing skills, and 1 through 8 for mathematics (from basic math skills through Algebra 1).

I provide individualized tutoring in the areas of reading, writing and math. I have a Master's in Special Education, so I know how to best help struggling learners.

I am a reading and writing specialist with a BA in K-12 education looking to inspire children to improve their reading and writing skills through creative and fun techniques. My goal is for children have a desire to become lifelong learners.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
