I used Catering by Dani for my wedding and it couldn't have gone better! Her and her team were so friendly! During cocktail hour we were taking pictures and I sent a bridesmaid out to the reception room to get some hors d'oeuvres but they had already finished up and I was so bummed and hungry. Then to my surprise one of the waiters came around with trays just for us! They really went above and beyond and everyone loved the food. When I was searching for a caterer I found it really overwhelming because you have to take so many steps before you can get a quote, talk to this person, meet with that person. When I signed up for thumbtack, catering was the first thing I requested and Dani was the first to respond with an actual quote just for our event! I will definitely be recommending this company and will visit their restaurant in the midtown global market! Thank you so much Catering by Dani for amazing service and great food! This chef undersells himself. Not only is good food delicious, but he should charge more for it. He catered our wedding in a small kitchen in a barn, plated everything, walked the food up a flight of steps to assist the servers, and it still looked and tasted great.

Patrick and his team catered a private wedding in our backyard. He was on time and enthusiastic about all aspects of the meal. All of the guests thoroughly enjoyed his unique style and menu! Patrick was personable, friendly, professional and went above and beyond adding his own tasty flair. We shipped in west coast salmon, mussels and clams and Mercury 212 created a fabulous gourmet menu for our guests. We highly recommend them for your catering needs!

Great Experience! We had issues with our first caterer up until the week of the wedding. We fired the other caterer only days before the event, after contacting Luzette. We finally got the customer service and attention we deserved. They were excellent. Extremely responsive, professional, accomodating, executed perfectly, food was great. The chef and servers made our guests feel like royalty! They really came through for us and would recommend them!!

Steve was the perfect caterer for our wedding. He went above and beyond to make our day special. Admittingly, Steve was more detailed and prepared than our wedding planner and everyone else combined...his experience really shined through and put us at ease. We expected 425-450 for our guest list, and with just 2 weeks to go, started to panic as our list grew to over 600. Steve simply remained calm through the whole thing...a phone call or two and he said everything was alright and we'd get through it. I was about to be a basket case, yet his calm reassured me. The best of it was, before anyone else was served, Steve personally served us first...along with a complimentary bottle of wine he had picked out especially for our meal. He stopped for a second to congratulate us, allow for a few extra pictures, and to make sure we...the bride and groom...were totally taken care of before moving onto our guests. Steve made our day special in so many ways. Something my mother said afterwards that sums up Steve pretty well was, "He's an old fashioned gentleman. His handshake is his bond, and his word is gold. He gets his reputation the old way...he earns it.". I highly recommend Steve to anyone for any catering need.

I was so lucky to find Debbie to cater at my wedding. She stood out right away. I wanted elevated farm to table food experience at my wedding, but was not sure how to make it happen. Debbie was able to guide me until we came up with the perfect menu that was delicious and possible to execute despite some limitations of the kitchen at my venue. I had so many compliments about the food even from some of the pickiest guests. Both cocktail hour food and dinner were amazing. The waiting staff was extremely professional and seamless, they really knew how to blend in. I am also extremely grateful for the amount of preparation and organization she put in before our big day to make sure everything went smoothly!!!

Jeff and his crew are over the top! My Husband and I had them cater our wedding in late September for 225+ people. Pig and turkey roast, roasted vegetables, roasted red potatoes, vegetarian stuffed peppers, coleslaw, garden salad, rolls and some of the best bbq sauce I've had. From the beginning, to the details of the big day, I know we could not have made a better choice! The team went out of their way to meet with us 2 months before hand at our location just to talk about the setup. On the day of the reception the weather was not ideal for an all outdoor event, but they made the BEST of it. Our guests raved about the food, and I'm still hearing from people 2 months later that the food was excellent. I can't wait to have another party so I can have Jeff and his crew delight our family and friends again.

I would work with Bread and Salt again and again. Though we don't live in MSP, we were there for our son's wedding,. We were having a barbecue for the rehearsal dinner, and I wanted elegant and delicious pastries for dessert. Elizabeth provided us with a variety of beautiful and delicious little pastries, bars, and cupcakes. If I lived there the next time we needed a caterer, we would certainly hire BREAD AND SALT. Beautiful work, punctual call backs, professional presentation-- I just returned from a brunch here in Boston, and the desserts were very good, but nothing compared to what we had last week from Bread and Salt!

The food and set up was AMAZING!!!! We hired Jamie and Chef Colin to cater our wedding. The focus of our wedding was environmental and sustainability. We wanted to use our own vegetables from our garden and chickens that we raised. We got a "grocery list" of what the chef needed based on our guest count. We delivered the materials and they worked their magic making a meal that was both beautiful and delicious. We also requested earth friendly plating, which was delivered. There was also squash falafel, as a vegetarian option for several of our guests, although everyone ate it happily. Oh, and they made an amazing butter using honey from my bees. Now, we are fairly laid back so this sort of "let it happen" worked well for us. We trusted Wandering Kitchen to do what they thought would work with whatever we had available. Bravo Jamie and Chef Colin!

We hired Ole Piper to cater our wedding reception at the Rosemount Community Center. We made the decision to hire them based on our previous wonderful experiences with the restaurant/ownership. They provided an excellent assortment of food, based on our requests and their great recommendations, that was cooked to perfection and was right on time. Many guests commented on how much they enjoyed the food. The process of having the it ready and served was seamless and done to perfection. It was clear they had the experience and expertise to handle our special day. We highly recommend using Ole Piper to cater any event.

My wedding reception. Luke was able to see my and my mom's vision of what we wanted. With the venue not providing much help, creating more stress than necessary (which I didn't know til later), Luke and his team we able to cook serve and clean up without me worrying or be concerned and focus on my guests. My family and I will definitely look up Luke for future parties.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
