Don repaired my fence that had been damaged in a storm and was outstanding with his work. He took it upon himself to shore up a few posts that he felt needed more stability at no charge. He quoted me a fair price and delivered in the time he said. I was very impressed with the work that Don did and I will definitely be using him for further house projects and will be recommending him to many others. THANKS DON!

Barry is everything you could want in a handyman! He's dependable, capable, trustworthy, and just an all around great person. I couldn't have wished for anything more hiring Barry to help me get my house ready to sell, and once I realized I couldn't do it all myself, I found Thumbtack searching online and Barry promptly responded to my request at a very reasonable cost. For all tasks large and small - Barry came through wonderfully. He'll help with anything that is needed, and he is very easy to work with. Thanks Barry..!

As with any house, 55+ years old, there are uneven floors, out-of-date finishes, no-longer-standard fixtures, a bad update or two and odd corners. Our job for Jamie was to work with all of those realities and still complete a finished carpenter's quality replacement of baseboards and casings throughout the upper level. Not a single glitch, situation or scenario was too much for his skill level or his friendly, calm demeanor. A relaxed, yet professional attitude was necessary for this job. He is the only carpenter we'll ever call from this day forward. Oh, and he even got our freaked out Chihuahua to mellow out.

Kel assisted with taking out some kitchen cabinets and installing a dishwasher. He was very communicative from the first messages, and let us know in detail what to expect in terms of work and price. There were a few complications with the installation (plumber needed to be called due to old plumbing, unable to find the correct part on the day of installation), but Kel repeated that he did not want to go over the estimate; I believe he worked hard to keep the cost as low as he could while providing quality work. He is friendly and kind, and my husband and I will hire him again if there's a need. We've been pleased with the new dishwasher and with the small projects he completed with us around the house.

Great experience. Julio installed a new wood railing in my home and it looks beautiful. The total time between initial estimate and project completion was 11 days--which we especially appreciated because we have a baby due really soon. Julio has an eye for design and kept making improvements/suggestions throughout the installation process. I felt that he did not cut any corners and truly wanted to produce a quality product, even though I know the project took him longer than he initially expected. Julio is also very friendly and personable. Also, he's great with dogs--we had no problem letting our dog roam around while they were at the house.

I hired Nick (Top Notch Roofing) and his team to reroof my house in September 2016. Overall I was satisfied with the job that was done. Nick is patient, creative, and committed to customer satisfaction. My project included working with a second company to insulate the roof at the same time that Nick's team was re-roofing my house. When the insulation company increased the scope of their work at the last minute, Nick was flexible to accommodate those changes. He also stepped up with a plan that would keep the project on time. There was minor damage to the inside of the house from the roofing work but Nick was accommodating in making those repairs. I received estimates from five roofing contractors and I found Top Notch Roofing to be price competitive. I recommend Top Notch Roofing. Nick takes pride in what he does. You will be well cared for.

Cory did excellent work in rehanging several doors in our house that were far out of square to the point where they no longer closed. The price was very reasonable. We plan to use him again for all of our home projects we are unable to do ourselves.

I took a big chance, and asked for someone to fix a guest bathroom door that wouldn't shut all the way because the bottom of the door needed to be planed. Casey responded right away, and was at my house in 10 minutes!! He also fixed a problem with my storm door lock which has been bugging me for over a year. He is awesome!!

I'm 28 and have now owned my house first house for a year. Needless to say I'm not an avid handy man, I have called on Josh for a number of projects... From a picture I found online while browsing at work, he created my dream hexagon fire pit (with swings)! Josh has many years of experience and every tool for any job. His work is 2nd to none and he's way under paid for the quality but, don't tell him (I still need help with a few projects). I would highly recommend Josh to anyone looking for quality work, knowledge, professionalism all for a bargain compared to other companies.

We had rotted out Masonite siding in back of the house. Ken recommend had board siding that would match the look of the Masonite. They also recommended improved flashing coming down from the roof. The installer was efficient, courteous, and thorough. Job completed on time and looks great.

We hired Angie and Adam (Orchestrated Living Design) to stage our rental house when we decided to sell last Spring. Since it was a rental, the house was entirely empty. At first my husband was hesitant to spend the extra money to have the house staged, but after meeting with them, we decided to go ahead and do it. Angie and Adam worked their magic, making a dull, empty, cold looking house with nothing in it, into a warm, welcoming home. We had four offers within the next three days. SOLD on the fourth! We never expected a bidding war, but to our delight, that is what happened. Did it help to have the house staged? Absolutely! Even my Doubting Thomas husband would whole-heartedly agree. Selling a house can be a stressful time, but Angie and Adam made this whole process a lot easier. They were very professional and careful when moving furniture, treating our house like their own, making sure to take care of every last detail. Angie’s design and the way she put the rooms together made us almost want to move in ourselves! I would HIGHLY recommend Orchestrated Living to help you sell your home. Thanks Angie and Adam! Really happy with the end result. We had a few hiccups along the way (as you'd expect at least a few things to go wrong initially or be delayed once or twice when you're dealing with an old house and city inspections). They did a great job of communicating the whole way, and the conversation was always about how to fix it and next steps. And, as I said earlier, hard to argue with the end result. Thank you for your professionalism throughout the project.

Anthony did an excellent job with our project. We had him remove a railing with spindles that separated our kitchen and family room, and he built us a custom half wall/built-in shelf. It turned out perfectly. He was able to translate what I was looking for (but didn't know exactly how to describe) into a plan and then the final product. Also, I was amazed he took at look at our trim and was able to match it just by sight...we have a slightly off-white trim and the former owners of our house did not leave touch up paint. I have been trying to find the match for several years, and he knew it immediately, just on sight!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
