America's Movin (Brandon, Andrew and Roberto) is great! They carefully packed and loaded my household items, and car, in Rochester, MN and Andrew drove everything cross country to Olympia, Washington. The move came off smoothly and everything arrived intact. I am very impressed with this team!

Needed new soffit board to replace rotting boards above bay window, that also contained a wasp nest or two. He also cleaned rain gutters. Things he did that were great: 1) showed up for initial meeting and to give estimate ON TIME! 2) performed beautiful work over bay window with new soffit boards complete with paint job; and removed wasps nest, 3) reasonably priced for this single-income household, 4) felt totally comfortable with him and appreciated his gracious attitude towards me as a female client. Was not condescending (which is my experience with a few contractors in the past). Will definitely ask him to return to help with more "fixer-upper" jobs as well as some more complex renovations.

Joe was great. Helped us out last minute. Very professional. Price was great for the service we received. Finished in about half the time I thought it might take to unload the whole 28' trailer of household goods. Would recommend him anytime and will call him again first for any move.

I've had varied experiences with housecleaning services throughout the years and usually, these experiences are tepid to bad. But Stephen from Mint Household Services was amazing! He was early and sat in his car until five minutes before the scheduled time: who doesn't love someone utterly reliable regarding time! Once inside, he did such a thorough and detail-driven job. From counter top to microwave to piano with all those pictures of children to stairs and underneath chairs--he really didn't miss a thing. He made sure he had lock-up and leaving instructions, was kind to our dogs and all in all, someone I was happy to have in my house. I am so thoroughly impressed and grateful! Please put something in his record that he truly is someone who takes pride in his work and does his work beyond the measure of capable, to superior. Finally, when I initially contacted Mint, I had also queried with another recommended service. That person took seven hours to respond and did so with this, via text: "where do u live?" My response from Mint was so much different--speedy, thorough. When I got that text I thought, why would I walk away from a well-organized system to go with this? And today I learned that my initial first impression of professionalism and excellent service paid off: Thank you, Mint, and thanks to Stephen!

Reid is fantastic, can't wait to hire him again. Friendly, versatile and does a great job. This guy works hard, and had no issue working around a household with small kids and dogs. Work quality is great and he banged out a list of miscellaneous things for us in a few hours.

Mandy was awesome in helping us deal with the dynamics of our female pack. She definitely has a sense about dogs and their persona and can also identify weaknesses and blind spots in owners. Mandy helped us identify ways in which we were unknowingly enabling a bullying dog while simultaneously encouraging submissive behavior in another pack member. We were creating the perfect storm by not understanding the messages we were giving to pack members through our reactions, responses and words. Most every dog has some point in their life where they are a unique challenge. Mandy can help the human see their behavior from the perspective of the dog. She was able to easily identify many of the things we do as owners (with good intention) to confuse our dogs. Mandy's consultation will provide us much guidance with any future dogs as well. She is well worth her fee and we would speak highly of her capabilities to anyone wanting to speak to us as a referral. While Mandy has had a dramatic effect on our pack and household since her visit, the hardest work came after her visit. Without follow through and consistency, behavioral changes may not stay changed forever so it is important to take your job as pack leader seriously. As time goes by, each day's challenges becomes easier as we all learn to fulfill our roles within the pack. We can now look forward to the future with hope.

I have been very happy with Deb’s work, her willingness to re-arrange her schedule if I need to change the cleaning day, as well as work on additional tasks as time allows (i.e., washing throw rugs, wiping out the inside of my refrigerator, etc.). She will also do things some cleaners don’t consider part of their normal duties, i.e., folding up blankets on the couch. Its wonderful coming home and having everything sparkle, cleaned, and organized! Deb would be a valuable and trustworthy asset to any household.

Carolyn is very professional, warm, and a hard worker. She both deep cleaned and surface cleaned our house, power washed the outside, and did some maintenance jobs. She is also really lovely around the house and kind to children and animals, which I think matters a lot when someone spends time in your house and around your family. Carolyn comes with lots of great cleaning supplies and tools/small machinery that you probably don't have in your own home, so she can really get things clean. She also takes great pride in her work. Finally, it is definitely a bonus that beyond cleaning, she can repair many household items from toilets to dryers, etc. I felt that she really cared about our house. I highly recommend her.

Leslie & Amber have been cleaning my house for several months now, and I haven't posted a review b/c I want to keep them all to myself! They are the BEST. I totally trust them to do a thorough cleaning -- they're fast, efficient, and cheerful. I'm finally reclaiming my household, after letting it get neglected for a few years. I couldn't have done it without Amber & Leslie!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

      • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
      • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
        • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
      • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

      What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor.
