Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

I had multiple bids from contractors when I needed a cedar fence installed. Owner (Shane Triplett) of Missouri Fence Co was hands-down the most professional, reasonable priced & really seemed to take pride in providing a quality finished product. His crew continued his expectations and installed a beautiful fence at my new home. I would highly recommend Missouri Fence Co to anyone looking for a fence company. My neighbors utilized this company and are also pleased with the finished product.

Mike and Andy replaced my old privacy fence with a new privacy fence. Mike and Andy did a wonderful job on my new fence. They delivered exactly what they promised and on time. I couldn't be happier. The fence looks awesome! They hauled away my old fence and some tree limbs as well. Mike and Andy do the work themselves with help from a good crew. My neighbor on the north had a gate in need of repair and Mike and Andy repaired his gate at no cost to him. Mike and Andy also repaired the chain link fence for my neighbor on the south by replacing a top rail section at no cost. I would highly recommend M & A Fencing for your project. They are good honest men who take pride in their work.

Just finished having my new fence installed, and the first thing I wanted to do after they left is leave a review! Most of the time people want to leave a review quickly because of something negative that happened, but for me I rushed down because everything was so positive. The fence looks amazing! I have been a homeowner for many years, and have had a fence built 2 other times, and this is far and away the best craftsmanship I have ever experienced! They were able to do the entire fence in just two trips to my house. There was obvious expertise as I watched them working through the window. If you are looking for a high quality fence, installed expertly, in a very timely manner, well, you have found your company!

Andy and his team are amazing. They met my strict deadline with ease despite having to completely redesign the fence. They worked with my neighbors and HOA to come up with an approved design while I was out of town and were even kind enough to take out my trash!! In addition, they found a section of fence hadn't been highly deteriorated while working on the property and built us a whole new section free of charge. My only complaint is that Andy and his team only do fence work. I wish I could hire them for all my home repair projects.

I hired H&A for a wood fence repair in a corner of my yard where there had been significant erosion. It took a bit for Andy and I to connect the first time. Once we made the connection though, communication was excellent by phone and text and through thumbtack. He provided an estimate, arranged for the utilities to be marked, and came onsite to do the work all within 8 days of the estimate. I was very pleased with the work and would not hesitate to have H&A do additional fence work for me.

This company was the best choice I could have made for true professionalism at a reasonable price. They not only had the best estimate out of all other companies but took time out to discuss all the options available to me for the best product for my needs home the other companies. I can honestly say I have the best built quality fence in the entire neighborhood by far. Byron is a master at his trade. It's truly incredible how fast they complete the project and maintain a high standard of craftsmanship. They even developed an answer to the power box shared by me and my neighbor by making an access point for the city while retaining the integrity of an enclosed privacy fence. If you have high standards, require professional integrity, reasonable prices, and demand long lasting craftsmanship....this is your company. I feel blessed to have found them and had the opportunity to hire them for my project.

Mark did a great job of communicating with me every step of the way. Phil came out and power washed and stained my fence and deck and did some repairs to both and did a great job! We had some rain in the middle of the project and Mark did an awesome job of keeping me informed as to when they would be back out. They fulfilled every commitment they made to get the job done. I will definitely use Supreme Contracting again for future jobs.

I set up a planned phone call for 9 AM yesterday. He did call about 9:30 AM yesterday and we agreed he would drop by about 5 PM that day to look at the issue. He never showed up or called. 24 hours later, he still has not contacted me in any way. I guess he did not want to do the work but I think it is rude and unprofessional not to let me know. Looks like I’m still looking for someone knowledgeable and professional to fix my fence! Why is it so frigging difficult to find someone to find a professional and dependable company to do work for you?
