I was thoroughly pleased with the work completed by Mr. Lopez. He was very professional and punctual. He rescued me from my impulsive DIY project and made my inexpensive laminate flooring look high end. Mr. Lopez was very detail oriented in all areas where the laminate was installed. I would definitely recommend him for laminate flooring installation.

Charles Brown of A Hammer And Nail Construction is honest and hardworking. He told me the truth about my roof, but only did what I requested of him to repair it...(I need to have it replaced, but I could not afford to at the time.) He repaired the shingles on my roof so that it would last a while longer until I can replace it. He was always on time and did the job quickly. He was always available to answer questions.

After getting several vague inquiries and 'quotes' from others on Thumbtack which were immediately moved into the metaphorical rubbish bin, my wife and I narrowed our choices down to two local companies: PBC, LLC, and a competitor not listed on Thumbtack. Stan and Bill set up a time promptly to assess our roof, and gasp, actually took the time to get a ladder, climb to the a part where the pitch wasn't steep, take photos of visible damage, etc. (trust me when I say that some roofing companies will try to just point out the damage from the ground level without lifting a finger). During their visit, they had a folder prepared with line item quotes, aerial views, general information about the stuff needed, etc. which struck me as being, well, quite organized. The overall quote from PBC was just ever slightly better than the competitor (the competitor had a similarly organized proposal), so we chose PBC, LLC. Communication with Stan and Bill (mainly Stan) was clear and concise from Day 1. When he said, "Someone's dropping off the roofing materials on [x] day by [y] time," that happened. When he said, "The roofers are starting work on [x] day by [y] time", it happened. Start to finish, our roofing project of approximately 20 squares took 3.5 working days: first day was tear-off, 2nd and 3rd day were install/repair, and half a day more of debris removal. Speaking of debris removal, I'd have to go outside right now and specifically look for any errant shingles, nails, or other materials. The crew/Stan/Bill probably got 99.999999 percent of everything, which is greatly appreciated since our dogs enjoy running about in the yard. We also had them do 2 handyman'ish jobs - removing a large piece of tempered glass from a previous owner, and fixing our chimney sweep-out door. Both were done in a timely and clean manner. Really happy with the way our roof looks, and thanks again for the fantastic overall service!

We hired Tomas after having two other quotes. Tomas' quote was the most reasonable. He was by far the most professional in his interactions with my husband and I. He also gave us his quote more quickly than the other guys even though he was the third company we called. He was the only roofer to offer us references as well, and we liked that and called a very happy former customer. These are the other reasons we loved Tomas. 1. He came over for a quote the same day I called him. 2. He brought a large crew, large enough that the job was finished in a reasonable amount of time considering our very large and complicated roof. 3. Tomas met with us, and offered a large range of options of products. He also was able to offer us a much better price on the various asphalt prices because he has excellent contacts locally and gets better prices on various asphalt shingles, better than the two other quotes. 4. Even though it was one of the coldest weeks of the year his crews showed up and worked all day everyday until the job was done. 3. Every day when his guys left our house he made sure the site was clean, no trash or junk was left behind from day to day. They actively cleaned the site EVERY day before leaving. 4. Weeks after a successful and professional replacement of our roof we noticed a couple minor superficial flaws. We made one call to Tomas and he was over here the next day up on the ladder. He fixed the little things and said that we could call him any time we had a problem. I will call Tomas in the future if I have anything I need worked on the house! Don't mess with anyone else! He's the best! Who knew having a new roof could be so painless!

VKS Construction and Vic Richardson have completed several projects in my home with an efficient manner and at competitive costs. Some of the projects include ceiling texture, sheetrock installation, trim work, soffit vent installation, minor electrical, deck reinforcement / support. Vic is hard working, trustworthy and a man of his word. We met in Walmart back in 2006. That same day, I got an estimate from Vic to complete an entire living room ceiling texture and ceiling sheet rock repair. Vic started work the next week and finished the work in 3 days, including drying and sanding time. I appreciated that Vic explained why the original ceiling texture was falling off and what he did to keep it on the ceiling permanently. The ceiling texture is still in place and I have not seen it flake off anywhere ever since installation by Vic. All the work that Vic Richardson has completed on my home is quality work. Over the years, Vic has become a good friend and I have met members of his family. Vic is THE "go to" man for construction projects or advice. I trust him thoroughly.

Sean walked the roof with me, explaining possible problems and fixes. Explained the proposal figures in detail. The crew showed up on time and went at it.When the old shingles and felt were off, Sean walked the roof again pointing out problem spots and explained the fixes. Excellent product, excellent installation and at a fair price. I would recommend to all my family and friends. Thanks again, Dan Liles

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
