Stephen replaced a poorly done slate tile floor in our foyer with premium vinyl and did an excellent job. He is thorough and talented in interpreting what you want. He also just finished an awesome backsplash in the kitchen compete with little round stones and a copper insert. It is beautiful and I can't stop looking at it!

My father-in-law was a well-respected general contractor for the past 50 years, with specialties in masonry, stone work and carpentry. With my husband growing up in the business, he can immediately tell the difference between good and bad contractors. Ron is a very thorough, honest, and true craftsman who did a phenomenal job in remodeling the 1st and 2nd floor of my workshop. There aren’t too many contractors like him these days. Not only did our project surpass our expectations, he stayed on budget and on time. I would highly recommend Ron for you home remodeling needs.

First of all, this company should stop recommending unlicensed, unprofessional painters! Randall ruined my house and now I am paying a licensed painter to 1. Fix his mess 2. Do what he said he could/would do but couldn’t 3. Finish the job! My stone siding was painted as will as the brick and vinyl siding- I had to cool myself down to leave this review- that’s how angry I was. I literally gave Randall $600. And wasted another $300 on paint! If there were a way to sue this company- I would! Now I’ll leave the rating for the yard work. I was quoted $100 for fertilizer, lime and weeding- so far I have received two of the three, what I don’t understand is why I was required to pay for all three when I only received the two?. Anyway, he “promised” to come out to apply the weed killer at the appropriate time so we’ll see, and I will reflect the outcome on another rating. I’m so disturbed by the painting job that I don’t really trust Land Techz again and would definitely not recommend them to anyone else. I don’t usually leave bad reviews, but it’s shameful what the painter did to our house and no one is out of pocket except my wife because I’m a student and our limited income comes from her. The photos added are just two of many reflecting the damage done to our house.

Perry did a fantastic job in my backyard!!! He pretty much did a full transformation of our backyard including grading the land, building a timber border, aerating and seeding, building a beautiful walkway with timber edge and flagstone steps. But most impressive is the gorgeous flagstone patio he built for us! He was very selective with the stones he selected and the placement to make each stone stand out, while keeping the total cost as low as he could. Perry worked hard, always communicated the timeline he was expecting, and let us know when a minor weather delay happened. I would definitely recommend Perry.

Dominic had recently completed several home improvement projects around our house. Some of the tasks were fixing a break in our storm water drainage pipe that was causing water to back up under our house and going under the house to repair any damage that the standing water might have caused. He repaired a portion of our roof that needed repair and replace some rotting wood on the outside windows of the house and touched up the paint on all of the windows. He pressure washed the siding of the house and pressure washed the deck and put a sealer on it. He painted the shutters and the doors and installed two new storm doors. He also had four tons of gravel delivered for my driveway and he spread it out and put a stone walk from driveway to house and he did even more. I list all of this to show the many talents that Dominic has and the tasks that he can handle. I am very pleased with the job that Dominic has done and I will call on him again when we need work done around the house. It is rare in these times to find some who is honest and cares about the quality of the job that he does. Dominic was always professional and on time and is reasonably priced.

Mike from Eventus planted a tree in the back yard. He respond quickly and with a fair price. Once Mike was here and the tree was planted, we began to discuss more landscaping jobs in the yard, with stone edging and gravel/stone beds being the next job. I also relied on Mike's expertise on the front, with a proper layout for my gardens with constructive suggestions to improve the overall view of the front (that's part of the next job too). Thanks Mike!

Stilworks completed an entire landscape renovation for our home. They built a beautiful stacked stone retaining wall, new stone walkway, patio and a pergola, as well as new plants. Braden was very easy to work with and always answered all of my questions. He sourced and obtained all of the plants that I requested and was very careful with all of the plants so they wouldn't get damaged. He and his crew were very friendly and easy to work with, but I was most impressed with his attention to detail and excellence at construction. I would highly recommend Stilworks for anyone looking for a landscape contractor to complete any size job, from a small planting or new lawn, to sprinklers, walls and more. Their pricing was fair and easy to understand. We are really enjoying spending time in our new yard!

Greg did an excellent job re-doing our front yard. Scope of work entailed building up a natural stone wall, pavers, as well as re-doing all of the landscaping. The project took a bit longer than initially communicated, but that's because Greg's attention to detail is very high and he doesn't settle for any result but the best. I would definitely consider hiring Greg again for all landscaping needs.

Stone Valley Landscapes redid my entire back yard before my house went onto the market. They took earth that hadn't been touched, and removed weeds, bushes, cut down dead branches, installed dirt and ground cover, and redid the steps going down from the deck through the back yard. In the front yard, they totally changed the look, freshing it up with new sod, redoing the flower beds and cleaning things up. Since the house went on the market, they have been diligent about maintaining the yard so that it kept looking sharp and clean. I have had more than one potential buyer give me compliments about the yard! I would recommend Richard from Stone Valley because not only is his work professional, but he knows what he is talking about - he from the get go told me the vision he had for what should be done, and why he would recommend doing one thing over the other. Having that guidance from someone who is an expert in his field was where he differeientated himself from some of the other companies I looked at.

My experience with Ivan has been excellent. Ivan and his team have always been on time, communicates with any questions by text and phone. They have painted my house interior and exterior. He finished off my work shop with sheet rock and paint. Additionally, Ivan is an experienced plumber. He fixed my shower valve, repaired the sheet rock and painted, all first class. Landscaping around my house included mulching, edging, drainage piping, reseeding, mowing and laying stone steps.

We are a full-service whole house company specializing in stone and tile installations. As owner, I started out in ceramic, porcelain and stone installations almost 15 years ago, and this continues to be our specialty. We do full remodel, if desired, but can do jobs as simple as small repairs. We have been in the remodel market since our conception, unlike others who dropped out of new construction and transitioned into remodel after 2008. Remodel takes a unique mindset and technical skills that most of the checkbook contractors don't have. Myself and my guys are the ones on the jobs, and not subcontracted out to the lowest guy to go in. We are the only one of two kitchen and bath remodel companies that do all of our work without subcontracting out in the Raleigh, Cary, Apex and Chapel Hill area. Most K and B companies work by having a group of contractors to send in to do the work once the job has been quoted. Who do you think pays that markup for them to push paper across the desk? We look forward to working with you, no matter how big or small the project is.

We are a distributor of natural and man-made stone and accessories, as well as pavers and retaining wall blocks. We handle El Dorado, cultured, stonecraft, and Dutch-quality stone. Our pavers are belgard and rockwood. We can help with installations and quantity takeoffs. Delivery is available in North Carolina and adjoining states.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
