Chris was great and fast! He put a bed together for me and recycled my old frame and the packing box. He also helped me with a quick small add on handyman type repair in my bathroom. I will not hesitate to call Chris in the future.

I am a blind veteran, musician, husband, and a father from the Parkton/hope mills/Fayetteville greater area. I could not have been more satisfied with the job that Backdraft did for me, they responded to me in a very timely manner and were very professional. I personally have build fences before going blind so I wanted to get somebody that would do as good as job as I would and they definitely met and exceeded that challenge and I thank you for it. They also are going to help me fix an electrical bathroom fan problem , That I hired another company from Fayetteville whose name rhymes with smash Wells who came out and halfway put in my fan and never contacted me ever again, also they had no problem with helping me with advice as well as tacking a piece of vinyl up for me also. I would recommend this company for anything that they put their name on it and that they say that they are capable of doing.

Mr. Smith replaced two lighting fixtures in my bathroom and two in my kitchen. The kitchen fixtures were not working at all and required replacement wiring not included in his bid, but the total charge was still lower than the other quotes I received. The quality of the work was outstanding, and I felt Mr. Smith was honest and highly knowledgeable and experienced in his trade. I highly recommend him.

We needed tile work in our bathroom and laundry room. Couldn't be happier with Mark and his team. The re-tile in the bathroom (including shower) came out fantastic. Mark showed up when he said he would and provided a great estimate of how long he would take. Installation, attention to detail, communication and clean-up were great. Will be hiring him again for other needs.

He helped installed Mirrors too. Mirrors needed to be cut and sanded which he did it nicely. We have one more shower doors that we will have him install as well. Overall an amazing experience. Matt was great. I initially hired him to do the floors and painting, but the project grew much larger to include changing bathroom vanities and toilets to building a fence in the back yard. I have never purchased or had to renovate a home before, and he was very accommodating and patient with me considering I had no idea what to do most of the time. He gave me great advice and suggestions even if it meant he would be losing money. He always responded promptly to any calls or questions I had....which is very rare in this business so I have learned. He did a great job on everything and Right Way will be my “who you gonna call” business in the future.

I love my new bathroom! Razon did a wonderful job. Turned a drab old tub space into a spa-like tiled shower room. Worked with me to turn my ideas into reality. They recommended good ideas for safety in addition to style. Will use them for our next renovation project.

Alex and his team replaced our home's large bathroom window that was damaged by a storm. Alex was great at communication, gave me several options for replacement, and negotiated on cost. He followed up with status updates several times, kept his scheduled install date, and finished the install in just a few hours. I'd definitely recommend his company for home work related to windows.

I had originally called Mike to do some sheet rock work, but then found out he also does plumbing. I had my whole house replumbed and the bathroom ceiling replaced. The work looked amazing but what really impressed me is that a few days later I found a small leak and called Mike he was over my house that same day to stop the leak. Mike and his wife are very people friendly and take the time to listen to your needs. I have had a lot of problems with plumbers in the passed doing poor jobs and over charging me I'm so glad I found them. I would highly recommend them.

Jeff did extensive work for us during our major home remodeling project. He fabricated all of the cabinets/shelves in our three bathrooms and our kitchen. He was involved in every stage of the project...from design, choosing a style, deciding on stain colors, and installation. He also helped us design and replace the interior of our kitchen pantry and master bedroom closet. He is thorough and meticulous, and we would recommend him highly.

We had 2 major issues that Robert signed on to fix for us: 1. "Negative" water drainage around the house that was causing moisture buildup in the crawl space well beyond the acceptable range. 2. Incorrect sealing between the house and the back deck that was causing wood damage below. Robert accomplished the following: 1. Sealed the foundation walls where needed, inside and out. 2. Installed an in-ground drainage system around the whole house and directed the flow downhill away from the house. 3. Installed a correct seal between the house and the deck. 4. Replaced damaged deck boards and water-damaged 2x4s and particle board under the deck; replaced the siding when finished. 5.Installed a vapor barrier in the crawl space and closed off the vents. 6. Installed a dehumidifier in the crawl space. 7. Installed 2 new outside garage lights. 8. Replaced a leaky shower drain in the master bathroom. We believe that Robert's work was excellent and resolved our issues. Robert is very knowledgeable and professional, as well as being very courteous at all times and keeping us informed about everything he was doing. His rates are reasonable; "time and materials" approach was the best method for this large job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
