An Affair to Remember catered our Hospice Memorial Service. The food was great - Carmen prepared exactly what we needed for the event. They arrived early and the food was set up beautifully. They even packaged up the leftovers for us. We had a great experience with An Affair to Remember and would highly recommend them to meet your catering needs!

We recently planned a celebration for our 50th wedding anniversary in January 2016. It included an evening buffet meal for over 50 friends and family. Following an internet search on Thumbtack we chose Chef Tyler of Personal Chef to the Stars for our first private chef experience. We have a well equipped kitchen and wanted the enjoyment of watching the food being prepared in our own home versus having the meal catered. The food and service were fantastic - awesome hors d'oeuvres, delicious dinner buffet and a crowd stopping superb dessert. Chef Tyler delivered beyond our expectations - from the advanced planning to the super clean up and all our guests were impressed and delighted. We would recommend the personal chef experience with Chef Tyler to anyone.

Yesterday we hosted a community pool luau with approximately 200-250 guest in 90 degree weather. Carolina Gourmet Catering did such an AMAZING job!! Everyone was raving about their food and service. Michelle Cook and her team were top notch. They were a pleasure to work with and were able to create a unique menu to suit our needs. I had several guests telling me that they wanted to book Carolina Gourmet Catering for their work parties. Aside from the great service and food, they also were extremely friendly and out going with our hungry guests and all the kids. We DEFINITELY want to book them for future events. Thanks so much Carolina Gourmet Catering ! - Debbie

Chef Sylvia was a highlight of a weekend celebrating a bride-to-be in the mountains! She was easy to communicate with via email or phone, had helpful suggestions of menu, arrived early and was so nice to work with. Her food was delicious, worked with dietary requirements of the group, and left the kitchen sparkling clean! Also, her whole process was flawless from beginning to end and very affordable. We will certainly use Chef Sylvia again when we are back in the Asheville area! Thank you!

If Thumbtack would allow 6 star ratings that is what I would give him. Devonte is very professional. His communication skills were excellent. Devonte was on time for his appointment that I scheduled him for. Devonte came to my place ready and prepared. Now lets get to the good part. Devonte meals were absolutely delicious. The appetizer was fresh. The entree (filet mignon) and sides were perfectly cooked and prepared. The dessert which is always my favorite was the best. The deconstructed apple pie was the perfect ending. Devonte plated presentation was on point. Devonte even educated me with some fine dining tips. Devonte was knowledgeable and will versed with his meal plans. Devonte will accommodate you by allowing you to customize your meal. I can't say enough about besides the consummate chef that he is he's also a pretty cool guy to chat with. He cooked for my guest and I, served our meals, supplied a complimentary bottle of wine and also had to go containers for our leftovers. Trust me you won't be able to eat all of the food Devonte makes in one sitting. I definitely without a doubt would hire Devonte for my next personal chef experience again.

Great overall experience, had a neighborhood get together with about 20 people, Top Hat provided bartending and catering services. Food was excellent, they provided all mixers, fruit, plates cups etc so took a lot off of our plate to prepare for the event. very reasonable prices. They went out of their way to make our guests feel comfortable and well cared for.

Oh my....the FOOD! Epps Bistro has provided my family with several weeks of food and Executive Chef, Terique Epps, cooked for a dinner party I hosted. Everyone raved about the food! He was extremely personable, professional and not only is he an excellent chef but he also cleaned up my kitchen (better than I would've) once he was done. I would recommend Epps Bistro to anyone!

Chef Kingsley is absolutely awesome. She cooks meals for my daughter and I weekly and the food is amazing. She also is really good at getting the most out of your money. This was my first experience using a personal chef and I can’t believe I went so long without one. I’ll be using her for a long time to come!

Kitty did the catering for our wedding, and everything was fantastic! My in-laws are Korean and she prepared bulgogi that even my mother in law was complimenting. Everything about the meal could not have been better. Kitty herself is also a treat to work with, and has an attitude that matches food... AMAZING! Thanks for helping make that day even better.

I was looking for an option for my best friend's birthday. We had some guest coming in from out of town and we knew they would be going out at least one night of the weekend so we were looking for another option! I basically went on Google and searched "Personal Chefs in Charlotte" and it lead me to Thumbtack. I was like what the hell, I'll give it a shot! So, I did and I received back several quotes almost immediately. I messaged each back and also checked out their profiles and searched them to see what I could find. I like to see pictures and I'm definitely a review reader. Another thing I'm big on is a personal connection. I can tell within a few minutes of talking with someone if I'm going to like that person or not. From the very first messages with Chris, I knew he was our guy. He was crazy quick at responding, which myself and our Type A birthday girl loved and I could tell was just a laid back guy. We are completely open to any food as long as it's good so I pretty much let him take the lead. He introduced the idea of a an Italian tasting menu to me and gave me some options and with the approval of the BG, we made our selections. He got to our party spot right on time, brought everything he needed and was very professional. He got to work right away getting everything started and we knew right off the bat he was going to work with us. He entertained all of our crazy questions while still working and just went with the flow. His food was AMAZING. Everything was so good. A few of us tried things we had never had and were pleasantly surprised. I believe in supporting small businesses and this guy was definitely worth every penny we spent. I will most definitely reach out to Chris in the future for my entertaining needs! Thank you Chef Chris for being awesome and putting up with us!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
