Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

I had posted positive feedback until I realized that Allen is not actually a licensed electrician. One month after he installed a new outlet in my home, I had an electrical fire. Thankfully, I was home and minor damage occurred, but a large electrical billed incurred (thousands of dollars) and the issue was linked back to the work that he did. He gave me a license number initially (now I realize it is not related to electricians), but when I asked him to help me with something that was linked to insurance (before I knew his work instigated the fire), he disclosed that he is not actually a licensed electrician. I also found out from the licensed electricians that the work he did on my house should have been inspected, but this was never mentioned. I have learned my lesson and rescind my positive review with this update.

An honest and experienced electrician who will go over and beyond your expectations. Before you call a major electrician company, call Tony. He provided me fair and transparent pricing, as well as explained every aspect to the job thoroughly. If you have trouble finding someone to just pick up the phone to answer a simple question, look no further. He takes the time to walk you through things and answer any questions, over the phone. Highly recommend.

Dustin was very professional and solved our electric issues quickly. He is also very reasonably priced and an effective communicator. My husband and I just moved into our new home and are thrilled to have found our “go to” electrician! I highly recommend Gregg’s Electric.

Unfortunately I was not able to hire John for our project due to personal reasons, but John was very professional, knowledgeable, and reasonable pricing for service needed. I hate that we were not able to continue with the job, but If I ever need an electrician, he will be the first one I call.

His electrical work is of quality, and he troubleshooted a number of ongoing electrical issues that many other local electricians wouldn't even try to attempt, plus their quotes were way overpriced. After about 5 days, all of our electrical work was finished. Victor and his associates made sure everything was working before he left. Asked him repeatedly for his NC Electrician License No which he never did furnish. I gave only 3 stars because he left a huge mess for me to clean up each day, he placed his greasy tools on our brand new furniture, and made inappropriate comments - all of this is what I considered to be unprofessional in behavior and attitude.

We hired David to do extensive work on our home - about 11 projects throughout the house in total. It's impossible to overstate the quality and professionalism of David & Louisa's work. A big part of the difficulty in describing what you get as a customer is David's one-in-a-million background, as far as electricians go. In his home country, he was an executive leader at an industrial / electrical engineering firm for 20+ years before coming to the US. This is reflected in the professional decorum, high standard of work, refined sense of taste / design, and service-minded humility he brings to the job. David has an intuitive sense for what looks good. We gave him some pictures and short descriptions of what we wanted. He asked good questions, and then with very little further direction he made the right choices for materials, placement and finishing. It all ended up looking just right. You won't find an electrician like this anywhere else, particularly at the very reasonable rates he charges. Thank you so much!

Joh-Al did a fantastic job! He communicated beforehand and arrived on time with a smile. He fixed both of the issues (which were much more complicated due to previous shoddy work), got parts at the store, and explained what he was doing throughout the whole process. He quoted a very good price and was very pleasant to work with! Thanks for a great experience! We will definitely be hiring him again for any future issues and would recommend him to anyone wanting a friendly, fair, and thorough electrician!

I have a rental house in Greensboro. I live in Wilmington, NC. The rental house is under contract to close the end of May. I drove up to Greensboro to get the due diligence items completed and I needed an electrician that I could trust that wasn't going to take advantage of me while I was in town. I had a few electrical issues and Mr. Iman met me early in the day, assessed the problems and was diligent in making the repairs. He definitely knows his stuff. I highly recommend him. His pricing was fair and fit the tasks he performed. I highly recommend his electrical services.
