Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an exterminator during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask exterminators in your area if they would be willing to offer a consultation over a phone call or video chat. You can then ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. Make sure to ask what precautions they are taking to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether they are observing social distancing guidelines. You may ask them if it's possible to conduct the appointment virtually or without person-to-person contact.

How can I find out if an exterminator is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Essential service providers during the COVID-19 crisis are defined by individual states, cities and localities. For the most accurate information, visit your official state or city government website to see what is considered an essential service.

CISA is the government agency that defines critical workers on a national level, so you can check its website for more information. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for pest control services?

You may be able to use digital payments such as Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash or Zelle to pay for extermination services. Many businesses accept methods of payment besides cash and credit cards. Check with pest control services in your area to see if they have changed their payment methods as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an exterminator when social distancing?

If you need pest extermination services inside your home, talk to the exterminator first to be sure that you both feel comfortable completing the project. Also, follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing. You can also arrange with the exterminator to take extra steps to stay safe, such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying at least 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing any common spaces before and after the project is complete.

Do exterminators offer remote or virtual services?

Typically, extermination takes place at your home or place of business, but you can ask if the business is offering special accommodations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across a profile that states the exterminator is offering remote services, ask what those services include. But if the job has to be done in person, be sure to follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing or see if you can postpone your appointment.

Does an exterminator need to enter my home?

If you have an outdoor pest infestation, it’s unlikely an exterminator will need to enter your home. But if your pest infestation is inside your home, the exterminator will likely need to enter your home. Check with the exterminator beforehand to explain the extent of the problem, the layout of your house and see if they can complete the job outdoors. You can also ask the exterminator to video chat or set up a phone call to exchange as much information as possible before you begin the project.

Do I need to leave the house for pest control?

It depends on the type of pest control service you require. Your exterminator can often tell you beforehand which products they’ll be using and where they’ll be applying it.

If the pest control company will be applying toxic chemicals, limit your exposure, according to the National Pesticide Information Center. For example, consider leaving your house during application and ventilate your home thoroughly when you return. And always keep your pets and their supplies away from the applied pesticides.

Talk to pest control companies near you for advice on what you should do while they’re treating your home for pests.

How do you get rid of ants?

The best way to get rid of ants is to hire an ant exterminator near you. The exterminator can also help you find the source of the problem that’s drawing ants into your home.

After they’re done treating your home, you can invest in ant baits to keep infestations at bay. It’s also important to take preventative steps to avoid ants.

For example, always clean up crumbs and wipe down surfaces to eliminate potential food sources. Regularly take out the trash, fix leaky pipes, store your food in sealed containers and seal cracks near your kitchen cabinets.

Here are more tips on how to get rid of ants (for good).

Is monthly pest control necessary?

Monthly pest control service is only necessary for certain situations. For example, severe ant or cockroach infestations may require monthly pest control in order to destroy the infestations at the source.

Talk to the best exterminators near you to get an idea of what type of service you need — and how many times you’ll need follow-up treatments.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.

I gave 4 stars because there was a brake in communication. I asked to be called when the exterminator was on his way. That was not communicated to him. Other than that the service was through and professional.

I wish the exterminator was more commutative. We were expecting him to explain us the process and what we needed to do before and after the extermination. He told us he had over 18 years experience bUT I doubt about that. We were the ones asking him questions and recommendations. Also I don't think he treated all the furniture and things inside the house. I just hope the problem is over now. We will see. Another thing I don't like is that they don't follow up to check if there are no beg bugs anymore. So I don't think that give me any garranty.

The exterminator showed up on time, but could not complete the services originally promised. The company sent the wrong person to fulfill the service. That person them promised a follow up by someone later in the week that could complete the service, but it's now Wednesday and no word from them yet.

I just moved to the area and Corey came out within 48 hours .... and did an awesome job. He was thorough, professional and upbeat. My wife even commented that it looked like he was smiling while he worked outside in the heat. You can tell he cares about his work and that his customers are happy. I highly recommend him for all your exterminator needs and Segue Environmental is my go to from now on. And we even had him add on for mosquitos and now I can sit outside again with my dog.

First, let me just say how awesome both Chad and Joe are! Chad knew EXACTLY what type of bug we were dealing with and assured us that he could rid us of the swarming Cicada killers that had taken over our backyard. Joe came out the next day and throughly pumped each burrow with special poison and also treated our entire yard. I could have literally spent an hour talking to Joe, as he is so knowledgeable when it comes to bugs. I switched exterminating companies because my previous company wouldn't treat cicada killers. Thanks guys!

KEEP IT MOVIN'!!! DON'T SIGN!!! I would caution anyone and everyone against doing business with Hawx Pest Control. Please, just pay $50 for someone to come out and do the job and leave. If they don't do good work, just don't do business there again. Let them keep that contract, and then you probably don't end up feeling like a sucker. Because otherwise, when you sign a contract for someone like Hawx to do a job like I hired Hawx to do a job, while responsibly providing a secure method of payment for them, and then they don't actually do the job they were "hired" to do, they seem to feel that you're still beholden to them and their stupid contract. Hired Hawx in August to remove Yellow Jackets from my backyard after my dog and I were brutally attacked. Initially, they started off wrong when they blindly sent the guy in jeans in a t-shirt to extinguish active yellow jacket colonies from the pile of firewood in my backyard. As of October 24th, I still have at least one active nest of yellow jackets in my backyard in their original location. I hired Hawx with the understanding that they were experts, and they were capable of exterminating and removing this situation from my property. But just how long must I wait; how long is one required to allow for a merchant to fail to fulfill their responsibility to a contract? After 3 visits and 2 months, they have failed to do the "one thing" they were hired to do (exterminate & remove: not ants, not roaches, not rats, but yellow jackets), so they were fired, but somehow "I'm" bound by a contract? "What's good for the goose..." and a contract only exists if it's honored by both parties. But Hawx doesn't seem to understand that, but they do know that they have thoroughly taken advantage of me as someone who "chose" to patronize their business instead of hundreds of others that I likely would not be blasting right now. Potential Suckers, forget about 100% Customer Satisfaction here. 100% bad business in my experience SO I'M PUTTING THE WORD OUT! DO NOT sign any contracts with this company. They will happily hold you and your $600 to the fire, for what could very well amount to nothing in the end, for you. Who needs $600 worth of pest control anyway? ***Just a Footnote*** After requesting that the company not send a particular technician to my home for future appointments, they scheduled that very same tech who subsequently arrived at my home after the services had already been canceled for that day and furthermore. He was told personally by me on the phone that very day, not to come to my house, and yet and still, he showed up.
