Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Laura is a great personal trainer! She really focuses on me and doesn't come to our sessions with a pre-packaged set of exercises that may or may not work for me. She's extremely flexible with scheduling appointments and genuinely cares about her clients. I would highly recommend to anyone considering personal training in the Raleigh area. Her rates are very reasonable!

We are a young professional couple who visited Raleigh from Australia for six months earlier this year for work. We were lucky enough to find DeMarcus who was flexible with our schedule when we were travelling, and was able to provide us with personal training sessions in our apartment complex's gym. After a detailed initial goal-setting consultation, DeMarcus tailored our personal training sessions to our requirements. He also gave us a detailed physical activity schedule for in-between sessions, taking into account our other activities such as yoga. We got a lot out of the discipline and enthusiasm DeMarcus brought to the sessions. We found DeMarcus to be professional and reliable, and his charges are reasonable. We would definitely recommend him to anyone seeking a personal trainer.

Katie is an AWESOME trainer!! She was my first experience with a personal trainer and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. She really made personal training personal. She helped me understand what being healthy and fit really means and guided me on how to eat healthier. She was realistic with temptations in life and how a busy schedule can interfere with eating healthy/working out. She helped me push through those situations whether it was suggestions on what to eat at a restaurant or reminding me that one bad day didn't take away all the hard work I had done. Katie makes working out fun and is dedicated to helping you every step of the way. She helps you with your weekly workouts and provides support throughout each week. Katie really is a positive person to be around and makes you feel like you can accomplish your goals, whatever they may be. HIGHLY recommend to anyone!!!

I’ve been training with Aaron for five months. He is the fourth trainer with whom I have worked over the past few years and the first to whom I have committed two sessions per week. He is smart and experienced. He is attentive and invested in my success. He sees improvement when I can’t and offers encouragement when I feel uninspired. He reminds me of my personal achievements and celebrates them in his gentle way. I've already achieved more than I thought I would! Aaron designs training sessions that are challenging, and he has high expectations for success. He changes up the workouts regularly and remains tuned into my personal goals. He is aware of my physical limitations as he pushes and pushes. Aaron ensures that my form and technique are correct and works diligently to help me avoid mistakes. He is flexible and willing to meet outside the gym to accommodate my needs and the demands of my personal life. I highly recommend Aaron. He is truly loyal, trustworthy, and dependable. I plan to sign up for at least six more months. I’ve got more goals to reach and am confident that Aaron is the trainer to help me realize them.

I sought a personal trainer after my therapeutic massage therapist told me that I needed to strengthen my muscles else they would not be able to handle the weight I place on them. I reviewed the quotes and reached out to two that resonated. Robyn was one of them. What set her above the others was (1) she was prepared, (2) she was on time and (3) she was thorough. Almost as soon as we began working together, my bone density results came back with osteopenia. Drawing from both her experience as a personal trainer and her own similar diagnosis, she was able to allay fears and challenge me yet not cause harm. That was important to me. I could go on and on about details and I know those are important to those who are contemplating whether or not to hire her. Nonetheless, I'll say this. Not one time in our months of working together did she not bring excellence to her craft. Her smile and upbeat personality as well as her expertise in her field made me want to do better in taking care of my body, my mind and my health. I HIGHLY recommend her!!

I've been seeing Bryant for a month now and have zero complaints. He's an awesome personal trainer. Bryant provides a unique workout regiment that really pushes you and, for me, led to results quickly. Based on what your goals are, Bryant will tailor his regiment to your needs. He is also a good teacher and will tell you exactly why and what you are trying to accomplish with each exercise. Last but not least, he's an easy guy to get along with and talk about other things to keep your mind off the exercise at hand.

Apologies in advance for the length of this review but I wouldn't be doing Terrance and A Driven U justice if I did not fully share my experiences: TL;DR - Facility - 5/5, Professionalism 5/5, Cost 5/5, customized meal plans 5/5, customized workouts 5/5, Results 5/5. I hired Terrance for 10 weeks, 3 times a week to help me get into better shape for my upcoming wedding. It was the best decision I could make. Initial meeting: Terrance invited me over to his gym; the facility was extremely clean and well put together; we talked towards my goals, my workout limitations; my current diet and we took my Body fat %, BMI, weight and full body measurements. The initial meeting was amazing; Terrance is extremely approachable, was able to address all my questions and concerns, walked through the high level plan for the next ten weeks and level set my expectations of what could be achieved if I was willing to work hard. Diet: Terrance provided me with a meal plan every week, what to cook, what to eat, when to eat, how much water to drink, my caloric intake, what were good foods and what were bad foods and how to eat healthy, not diet. It was a game changer. I eat out a lot for work but he was able to help me look at menus for the restaurants I was going to and suggest what I should get to ensure I stay on the right path. He was able to provide me with balance between eating my veggies, proteins but also occasionally having a steak dinner and some ice cream. He also held me accountable; after meal prep sometimes he'd ask for me to show him a picture of what I cooked; this helped me ALOT - I knew if I failed I wouldn't just be letting myself down but I'd be letting him down - he becomes vested in his clients development. Workouts: The workouts were HARD. Terrance will push you out of your comfort zone and motivate you to achieve new goals. If you're coming to A Driven U's gym know that you are coming to work; you will have some instances where you will feel like you can't do it; but he will be right there motivating you and helping you finish off your sets. He did not let me quit on myself. He is extremely well informed with his workout regime; He taught me the benefits of not being the guy who can lift the heaviest weights; lower weights with higher reps helped me generate a leaner, stronger body. One thing of note; in my ten weeks with Terrance; no day was the same; he was able to keep it exciting, fun and creative. Overall: The quality of my time with Terrance is something that I will never forget; so much so that even after my wedding I kept seeing Terrance. The results: I was down over 10 pounds, my fat % had decreased significantly meaning that I had put on a lot more muscle. My wedding was amazing, my confidence was through the roof and I felt stronger. Thanks Terrance! I couldn't have gotten this far without you - If you are in the Raleigh area I highly recommend Terrance as your personal trainer AND nutritionist; its rare you find a personal trainer that will also help you as your nutritionist - he's the complete package and an investment with him is an investment in yourself.
