Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire an appliance repair technician?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire an appliance repair technician instead of replacing the unit or doing the repair yourself. The first is to keep your warranty valid — doing a DIY repair on a home appliance may void some warranties.

Another reason is having the proper tools. While you may need to go buy extra tools to perform a repair, a technician will have the tools ready.

Hiring a pro can also help ensure a long-term fix instead of a band-aid solution, as an experienced pro will be able to assess the equipment for function.

If you have a broken appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair pros near you to figure out if it's worth hiring a pro to fix it for you.

How much does it cost for appliance repair?

While the average cost of appliance repair is $65, the price can range from $45 to $120. A technician may set a flat rate or charge by the hour. The average hourly cost is $65, although this can range from $40 to $95.

Appliance repair technicians typically set their prices depending on the type of appliance, level of difficulty and other factors. Some pros may also charge a service fee or a consultation fee, and they might also offer discounts for new customers.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an appliance specialist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation or appointment during the COVID-19 pandemic is virtually, with no in-person contact. After messaging the appliance repairman, you can ask to set up a video chat or phone call to discuss what work needs to be done. Make sure to ask them how they handle payments, keeping in mind that paying in advance may be safer than handling cash or credit cards until the pandemic is over. Ask the professional what procedures and precautions they have in place to ensure safety during this time.

How do you tell if your fridge is broken?

Use your nose — and ears — to tell if your fridge is broken and it’s time to call a pro.

The first clue is whether your food is expiring too quickly. Your fridge should be at or below 40º Fahrenheit and your freezer should be at 0º, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If temperatures deviate from these figures, the result can be food spoilage (from too much warmth) or even a frost buildup (from a faulty freezer).

Other telltale signs that your refrigerator is broken are excessive noise, escalating electric bills and excessive heat from the back of the fridge.

If you think your fridge might be broken, don’t delay — contact the top appliance repair technicians near you today.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an appliance repairman or specialist when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an appliance service specialist or repairman, check your local news for community guidelines and follow the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Discuss safety protocols with the appliance repairmen before they enter your home. And when they enter your home, stay at least 6 feet apart, don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

If you decide to postpone the work, consider buying a gift card from them or paying for future work. This is a great way to give back to the community, as many small businesses and individual contractors are feeling the economic effects of social distancing.

How can I find out if an appliance repairman or specialist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential provider varies based on state, city and local guidelines. Visit the official government website of your state or city to see which services are considered an essential in your area.

For more information on a national level, read CISA’s publication on critical infrastructure workers. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does an appliance specialist need to enter my home?

If the faulty appliance is located in your home (e.g., a washing machine, refrigerator, toilet, dishwasher, etc.), the appliance repairman will most likely need to come inside to complete their work. However, if your appliance is outdoors (e.g., a grill, outdoor kitchen, etc.), it may be possible for them to complete the work without entering your home and with limited person-to-person contact.

Is appliance repair easy?

While some appliance repairs like cleaning the inlet filter on your washing machine or cleaning a smelly dishwasher are perfect DIY projects, others are better left to the pros.

Certain jobs can be dangerous and risk extensive damage, such as repairing gas lines or leaks. Others require experience and know-how, such as balancing a clothes washer, replacing electric wires, rewiring appliances and more. If you’re not sure how to get it done safely, contact the best appliance repair technicians near you.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator?

In some cases, it might be cheaper to repair a refrigerator — in others, your best bet is to just buy a new one. The decision to repair or replace a refrigerator will depend on several factors, but the most important is cost. If the cost to repair a fridge is much more than the cost of buying a new one, it’s time to replace the fridge.

My washing machine broke down, so I contacted Southern Appliance & Home Service to inquire about getting it repaired. Based on pictures that I sent, the repairman concluded that the spider arm was broken. He also researched what parts would be necessary to repair the machine and sent me an estimate. Since the repair was going to cost around $500 (due to the expense of the parts), I have opted to buy a new machine. The repairman also provided an opinion on what machine might be the best to purchase. I am amazed and delighted that Southern Appliance provided as much information as they did, without me making any purchase whatsoever. They are definitely on the top of my list for appliance repairs, and I will definitely contact them the next time I need an appliance repair.

Avery came out to check our broken dryer. He arrived within a couple of hours of submitting my request, gave me a couple of repair options, went to go pick up the broken part himself, and then fixed it - all within a couple of hours. His service fee is very reasonable, and Avery is a charming young guy. Highly recommend Avery for appliance repairs.

Avery asked me questions over the phone before coming out to fix my dryer. Just in case It was something I overlooked that could have been an easy fix. Avery showed on time and was polite, knowledgeable and my dryer was fixed the next day after the right part was in. I will definitely call Avery in the future for any home appliance repair.

Dustin was great! Worked quickly and thoroughly and was transparent regarding the cost and issue. My Samsung dryer is only 4 years old. He broke the dryer completely apart and showed me the problem and then went and picked up the part, informing me of how much it would cost before hand. He returned to repair the dryer quickly also sharing with me what he suspected caused the break. Dustin put the dryer back together and completed the job very neatly. I was home by myself and he was very professional yet friendly. I'll definitely use him again for any other appliance repairs I may have. Dryer now works as it had originally.

Rob replaced the compressor on our LG refrigerator. He was able to get to our house the morning after the appliance failed. He explained the various options for repair including using the somewhat lengthy LG warranty process. Rob kept us up-to-date as he worked through the procurement of the parts including the second replacement compressor after the first one sent by LG was defective. He gave us an up front cost estimate which he honored though much more work was required.

Avery came out and repaired our refrigerator. No ice or water dispensing. He showed me what found and went and got part and came back and fixed problem. Avery was courteous and professional. Two days later the water dispenser stopped working and Avery came out and found a different problem and fixed it. He would not take any payment for this call parts or labor as he felt he should have found this problem the first time. AVERY'S CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AMAZING AND I WOULD RECOMMEND "AVERY APPLIANCE SERVICE" TO ANYONE.

I cast a wide net to help us with our washer. Rob was the first to reach out. He was clear, friendly and patient on the phone and in person. The part needed for the repair ended up costing just as much as a new washer so we went that route but Rob was kind enough to open our washer lid so I could get my beloved blanket out, at no extra charge. I will definitely reach out to him first next time and appliance acts up or if our friends and neighbors are in need. Thank you, Rob. Trustworthy service seems to be a rarity these days. As a homeowner I feel relieved to have you and your skills as a reliable resource.

On July 23rd, I reached out on thumbtack to find a appliance repair due to my dryer not working. I normally would work with Villa's Washer and Dryer repair specialist, which the owner fred was sick. So I reached out to Nick's Appliance because I really needed my dryer, which I should have just waited. Nick came out stating he was local and offer a fair price. On July 23rd he responded and came out stating my thermal fuse needed to be changed and that was the problem. Within a couple of weeks the same problem happened again. On August 17th I reached out to Nick again and texted him. No response. Then called him which this time my husband left him about 3 voicemails. No response. So I decided to go back on thumbtack to look through my messages and locate him which I did. I left a message. No response until the next day. He stated to me he would come out the next day but it would be a $75.00 charge again. I asked him why would I be charged a $75 fee again, when it was 3 weeks since you last came out. Now he stated he was not close and it would be a 50 minute drive. I made sure that when I had first reached out to him or anyone, it had to be within Raleigh and close to me. Now all of a sudden he was not local. Anyway I left messages for him, he only responded twice from that morning after 9am. I kept sending messages no response. Then my last response was at 1:38pm and I was so annoyed. This was just bad business and cost me $170.00. How can someone just treat you like this. Bad Business! I then reached out to Fred Villa's and he was feeling better from being sick. He came out the next day. Looked at my dryer and had questions stating the thermal fuse was not the problem. The issue was a vent pipe being clogged and heating element was warped and grounding. I really did not understand that but he went through what that was. He also stated my vent pipe was clogged and needed to be blown out. Nick did suggest that but still overcharged me. I'm out of that money but it's ok. I will never use him again. My dryer is good to go now thanks to Fred and he never charges a lot, it was $35 fee to come out and address the problem. So it cost me $120 including the $35 fee. This was a good lesson learned. Sometimes when you so use to dealing with one person, it's good to just wait. Villa's washer and dryer repair specialist very affordable, reliable and are specialists.
