If you are looking for an honest, dependable and reasonable contractor look no further. I interviewed several contractors to remove ceramic tile and laminate and install hardwood flooring throughout. He was the most reasonably priced but more important to me, he was trustworthy and put my mind at ease during a stressful process (I had experienced water damage from a broken pipe under our home and was dealing with insurance, a huge mess etc). He communicated throughout the entire process and I could rely on him for expert advice. He knows what he is doing, does it well and went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and our home was in beautiful condition after the flooring was complete. When I look to remodel other areas of our home Noel will be our guy!

You can't do better than Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance. Nick Gillaspie is a true professional with an artist's eye. He recently completed a job for our family, rebuilding our house in Dilworth which was over 100 years old and in very rough condition. Before we started with Nick, a real estate agent told us that it was a tear-down. Now that Nick has finished his work, it's structurally sound and beautiful. As someone who's done a little bit of construction and carpentry myself, I know good work when I see it. Nick can do just about anything in the building trades himself and do it well: frame and finish carpentry, drywall, flooring, tile work, painting, roofing, landscaping. But, when extra help is needed, he hires the best. His crews are mature, very hard working and fun to hang out with. Nick himself is a pleasure to work with, a really nice guy with a good sense of humor. He's a family man with a serious work ethic. He talked through different possibilities for solving construction problems and cleared every major decision with me in advance. He worked hard to find the least expensive solution to problems that could have been costly. And he came up with creative ideas for how to make a very old house not just functional, but a real pleasure to look at and live in. I'd work with him again any time, for any kind of job. If you're looking for someone for any job, large or small, and would like a reference about Nick Gillaspie and Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance, please email me at with your phone number, and I'll give you a call.

Vince and John completed a laminate install fo me. Vince by far had the best price and he did an outstanding job. To top it off they worked all day Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and finished up Tuesday afternoon. Even more impressive is that this was over a holiday weekend (New Years Eve and New Years Day). I would highly recommend them and I will be using them for future projects!

Jeremy showed up on time and did an excellent job. He was polite and clearly knew what he was doing. He gave me options on how I wanted to repair the carpet, going over the pros and cons with me. He finished in the time he said he would and his price was exactly as quoted. I will use him again in the future as he does all sorts of flooring installation.

Paul and his crew did an excellent job. We called Paul's company after our new house flooded due to a faulty washer. Paul replaced carpet, linoleum and wood laminate floors for us, as well as installing new tile in our kitchen. He also repaired our ceiling and dry wall and found preexisting damage to the subfloor we were able to take care of it. He was very professional and easy to get in contact with, I would definitely recommend him for future jobs.

In early May 2016, I purchased laminate flooring from a big box store North of Charlotte, NC. I was on a very tight budget and didn’t have the luxury of purchasing their installation package. After all the purpose of buying from a big box store is to do it yourself to save money. Preparing to lay just over 1600 square feet of the laminate is daunting. By the end of June, it proved to push my daughter of 16 years and myself past our abilities both in experience and time to do it. My daughter is trying to complete three summer classes pushing her to spend 9-12 hours a day studying while I work to make a living. We just weren’t making any progress. It’s not often I make a recommendation for a business, but when someone goes way above and beyond, I feel it deserves a note of respect and commendation. From the moment I met you by phone conversation you were caring, professional and offered field knowledge directly relating to our concerns and issues my daughter and I had encountered during our attempts to get started. I was additionally impressed by your willingness to work with our already purchased flooring, tight budget and our hope to continue to be part of the installation process by clearing rooms, removing carpet and nail strips, and disposing of carpet and nail strips. The arrangement made it possible for us to afford the help your company was willing to offer. It’s challenging, if not impossible, to find a contractor willing to tailor the bill to fit your budget in the way that you have for done for us. You’re genuinely helpful, caring and professional. Sincerely, Homeowner

I have pets and a child so needed the carpet taken from my living room and I wanted it to match the linoleum flooring that was in my kitchen. They went the extra mile and got the exact same flooring by contacting the company that built my home. It's perfect and was a great decision. I'm very happy.

Alex and his crew did a great job installing our vinyl plank flooring. He was extremely patient with a lot of the construction delays we had, and is even coming back to finish up some work that we were not ready for. We look forward to dusting our floors off and enjoying our home soon. Thank you Alex!

We have used Kenneth at Elite Hardwood Floors on two separate occasions. The first was to repair and refinish the hardwood floors in my mother's house after a flood that started in her kitchen damaged the flooring and baseboards throughout the kitchen, dining room, and all the way into the den and formal living room areas. The house was built in 1956 and the hardwoods were original, but they had been covered by carpet since the mid to late '70's. Needless to say, Kenneth had his work cut out for him. Mom decided to put down some new Brazilian Cherry hardwoods in the den and kitchen (to replace some hideous vinyl tile and linoleum), so Kenneth was able to salvage some "good" sections of the original hardwoods from the den to replace flooring in the formal living room that was too severely water-damaged from the flood to remain in place. Kenneth did an excellent job and all of the flooring turned out beautifully. I'm not so sure the "original" hardwoods looked that good "originally"! Everything looked better than brand new! Some months later, when my wife and I decided to replace the Berber carpet on the first floor of our then six-year old house, Kenneth was again our only consideration for the job. He was able to get us an excellent price on the laminate flooring we liked and the installation went flawlessly. Between the dogs (we have three) and the heavy foot traffic downstairs, we are so happy to be rid of that carpet! I can assure you that if and when we decide to replace the carpet upstairs with laminate or something similar, we'll be calling Elite! Kenneth's prices are VERY competitive and his workmanship and attention to the finest of details is unmatched by anyone in this area. If you want new hardwood floors installed - or just want your "old" ones to reclaim their former glory - Kenneth Freeman at Elite Hardwood Floors is your ONLY choice! - Jeff and Cindy Barbee; Harrisburg, NC

We just recently ordered 525 square feet of the Brazilean Tigerwood 3/4" solid prefinished hardwood flooring from Floor Design Solutions. My husband and son-in-law installed it two weeks ago and it is absolutely beautiful. There was no waste at all and the quality is 1st class. We couldn't be happier with our purchase and the service we received. Tom Truitt was wonderful to work with. The price was very competitive, the service was outstanding and the whole process was extremely easy. I would strongly recommend using them for your hardwood flooring needs.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
