Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Edward's Roofing responded quickly. Offered to talk with my insurance company to help get repairs covered. It was unexpected and saved me significantly in out of pocket costs! The price was fair for the work we needed. The roofing team arrived early the morning of the project. They placed tarps all around my home. They were efficient, clean, and professional. They cleaned up all roof debris. The roof looks great & I'll use these guys in the future if I ever need roofing services.

You will want to work with Bill and Edwards Roofing and Gutters! While I was away Bill kept me abreast of the work needed on my aging roof that came with the house we bought 3 years ago. Edwards is a professional who has knowledge of this industry, and I learned where my insurance company dropped the ball on us first time homeowners living in a storm-prone area. The work crew was efficient, fast and even my neighbors complimented their presence and the job. We had a faded, dingy 20 yo roof with missing shingles transformed, and we are very happy with the final result.

He came on time and actually quoted the job less than on this site after seeing the roof. He made sure I approved the job before leaving.

I messaged the contractor Tom for an estimate on a roof. He said he would get a satellite image and send me an estimate. Without my knowkedge he sent an employee/subcontractor to my house. The man took pictures and climbed and walked around a slate roof without my knowledge, permission or consent. He had a woman with him. They did not knock in the door or announce who they were. I was not at home at the time. My daughter called the police. When confronted they said Tom sent him. I would suggest scheduling appointments or at the very least asking if it would be alright to look at the home. I felt this was very unprofessional. There were other red flags such as Tom asking if I were sure my roof was slate. Their quote was $2000 over other quotes. He used the satellite image to do the quote and apologized for what had happened but I would not feel comfortable hring this company.

Russ really saved me a lot of hassle repairing my roof after Hurricane Florence. Ever since moving to Wilmington 7 years ago it's been a literal nightmare trying to find a contractor to do small repairs or maintenance jobs. Many people just don't return calls or refuse requests for work simply because they don't pay several thousand dollars. After hurricane Florence, my roof was missing a concentrated area of shingles that I just needed to have someone replace. Everyone tried selling me new roof repairs without even looking at my property. Other contractors would accept the job then just not even call me back to complete the work. I got in touch with Russ and within a day he'd come to my house (ON A SUNDAY NONETHELESS) to inspect the area and meet with me and collect a shingle sample for color comparison and bought the materials right after he left and had the roof completed within 3 days of coming by originally. All this after 2 and a half months of trying to get someone to do the job at all. This will be my new permanent handyman for all my household maintenance and repairs. I can't thank him enough for the stress he finally relieved me of! Very personable and friendly. Pricing was not outrageous. Will definitely recommend again
