Wayne was easy to communicate with, showed up when he said for both the estimate and to do the work. His crew was personable, polite and courteous. No nonsense estimate and the same thing when it came to doing the work. They showed up, got set up, knocked out the job in a few hours, cleaned up and were on their way! This is what you want from contractors on Thumbtack!!

This review is a long time coming and I apologize! I called Gilbert to inquire about repairing our linoleum floor that had bubbled up in spots. He promptly called me back and set up an appt to take a look. While he was over i also showed him my stairs that lead to the basement and how the carpet on the stairs was loose...he fixed the stair carpeting right then and there! It turned out my linoleum floor needed to be replaced. Gilbert left samples for as long as we needed them and set up a time for installation of the new floor. Gilbert had his crew there promptly on the first day and the crew was above professional. one member even discovered why my floor needed to be replaced in the first place...a leaky dishwasher hose. The installer stopped what he was doing grabbed a clamp from his truck and fixed the dishwasher without missing a beat. The end result was an excellent experience on my part. Extremely competent, friendly and professional service and an excellent looking floor. One side note is that Gilbert has a wealth of contacts at his disposal. He was able to reference us to a gentleman that works with gas appliances to disconnect and reconnect our gas stove and also gave us some numbers of gentlemen he knew for other jobs that we were thinking of. I have and will highly recommend Gilbert and his crew for any flooring needs. The level of customer service and quality of service was outstanding and all at a VERY affordable price. I look forward to doing business with Gilbert in the future when we redo our carpets.

Just hired Steve for my retaining wall replacement project. I really cannot say enough great things about him. He was on time, always answered my calls and requests, and did a killer job. Typically contractors in this business are not that professional and will leave you hanging, but not Steve. Check out the before/after of the wall he just did, the proof is in the pictures. My wife and I could not be more satisfied. Seriously, hire him and you will not regret it.

I had major ice damage last winter. After a summer long nightmare dealing with contractors that made the roof a part time summer job, I parted ways with them and found Mike on this site to completely replace the ceiling sheetrock and some other work. He only asked if was OK if he worked after 5pm to complete each day's work. Total time to tear out ceilings, replace, tape, mud, sand and paint 7 rooms was 2 weeks.Last day was reinsulating the attic. He travelled 45 miles to get here and was here at 7:30 am until done each day, and worked alone, except for the insulation, when his lovely wife fed the bags into the machine while he was up in the attic spraying it. All work was done as promised, on time, and at the agreed price, including a few extra's throw in. Would highly recommend.Great work ethic, which is getting harder to find nowadays.

It was a pleasure working with John and his wife Leanne. John did a fabulous job taping and painting at my home in addition to installing a new toilet and bathroom sink and refinishing the hardwood floor in one of the bedrooms. He was always punctual, pleasant to deal with, and took care to clean up after he was done. I would highly recommend John and will certainly keep him in mind for any future jobs.

We needed to have our bathroom floor repaired due to a leaky toilet and because Bob was so easy to work with and reasonable, we wound up getting floor, toilet , vanity & window replaced plus walls, woodwork& ceiling painted. He does such quality work. He repaired the subfloor, installed tile, took extra precautions with toilet to prevent the seal from breaking down again. He installed a new window, insulated the frame, moved outlet & lighting fixture. He helped us research ways to refinish the tub. The tiling job looks amazing. His attention to detail is superb. We couldn't be happier with the work he did & whole heartedly recommend him.

I had a bunch of contractors give me quotes and I chose Handy and Some (Sean) because I felt he was upfront and honest about what the cost and length of time would be. He was on time and gave me many choices that I could have for my deck. I felt he wasn't trying to sell me on anything. With his help, I went with composite decking. Had him relocate the stairs and add lattice. The other contractors, some being more expensive were late to the appointment, couldn't start till next year, didn't give me many options on what type of decking I could have or didn't show up to give me a quote. Sean actually went beyond what we agreed on and with no cost added, gave me a beautiful deck. He also redid the front porch for me. He told me it would take 2-3 weeks to complete and true to his word, it was completed. I plan to hire him again for future projects. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend him to anyone looking for contractor. I added before and after photos.

We wanted carpets replaced in two living rooms with laminate flooring. Nathaniel was prompt in visiting for an estimate, and gave us a fair and competitive price. We had two heavy items in the room that I could not move myself, but Nathaniel was gracious enough to offer to move them and actually had to move an item twice due to a last-minute change on our part. He had estimated about 2 days to complete the project, but wrapped up the work in about a day and a half. The job was excellent and to our satisfaction. They were very professional the entire time. I felt that they went above and beyond what we agreed upon when helped me with the disposal - they helped load my vehicle twice and helped me at the landfill. We are very happy with the quality of his work, and will gladly do business with him again. I highly recommend his services to others.

Charlie is a finish carpenter as well as a General Contractor with architectural design talent. Over the past 2 years, he has completely renovated a large gutted loft condo and our 3500 sq ft home in West Medford. People cannot say enough about the wonderful job that he and his small crew accomplished. Neither can we, because we know that some of the situations both homes presented were extremely difficult. He converted a high-end Poggenpohl kitchen to fit the space in our condo, & the whole condo is done in granite and marble, including floors, and full of subtle amenities. And the upgrades he made to our Medford house caused it to sell at a great price right away. He can do anything with wood - did I say that before?? The cherry medicine and bathrrom cabinets & Jacuzzi surround are just gorgeous, and once done, we had to be pried from our house. And on top of that, he is a first class guy - you'll love him, as we did.

Josh I lost your buisness card and have a things I need to get done. I was so happy to find u again!!! projects that I need done. I have to say this young man is one of the best. I have had many contractors, carpet companies, roofers. Etc. I have owned my own home for 30 Years and i am constantly upgrade it and changing the look. I met josh before his Milatary career. He did work for me then. It was always to perfection and the absolute best price. He is very respectful of your time and needs and always a gentleman with manners u wish for. In any case in the past few years josh has done a it of remodels. He opened up a wall between my kitchen and living room that Ali e made me jump with joy. What he did after was truly amazing. Granite breakfast nook, with an island in the kitchen. Took my breath away. He painted every room in my home and put in hardwood bamboo flooring. That was the biggest project he had done for me. I wouldn't even think of using anyone else, but I also frugal and wanted to make sure his prices were with standards. He saved me on that big job 18 thousand dollars. The quality of what he did above and beyond. I just had my house appraised and the value went UP 30K!! So now I would like my master bedroom and bathroom gutted and have josh work his magic. I will be in touch soon josh. I would like to go over the plans do u can price out the job and draw it up. Look forward to seeing u soon. I am sure your little ones are getting big. One last really none of my business comment I saw someone gave u one star? I have referred you to at least 10 of my friends. Refinishing their floors etc. and they were very impressed with ur professionalism and work ethic. So maybe this woman is just having a hard time in life and unfortunately they have a hard time dealing with stress and expect people to be at their call when demanded. The hard part of being self employed. You have made so many happy. Please do not let this person disturb u in any way. Maybe she has personal stuff going on who knows. Just keep going. I want my project done now so call tomorrow!! Sorry that was a joke. Maybe in poor taste. I will pray for the woman that she find happiness in something. Thank u josh. Talk soon

We hired Ralph to do some tile work for us in our bathroom. A walk-in shower, tub deck, and floor. He did an absolutely beautiful job! I highly recommend calling him for your project. It's rare to find someone who is a complete professional throughout the entire process! Very happy with the work and the price was very fair. We plan to hire them again for our next project!

Just booked Ryan Adams--out of 4 contractors, he offered us the best price to refinish our hardwood floors. What struck me most about him is that he was willing to work within our budget and was very professional while he looked at our house. We are very excited to see how our floors look when they are done and we will post a follow up review!

CLP flooring installed a laminate flooring product in our kitchen, dining room, living room, 1st floor bedroom and entrance way. A major part of the project was removing old ceramic tile in the entrance way that had been there for over 30 years. I never saw another person work as hard as this man did to get it perfectly clean! His work is truly exceptional. The new flooring is also perfect, he worked especially hard to have a solid flow as the rooms are open concept and around a fireplace hearth fitted trim boards. Also took care of floor squeaks as the house is over 30 years old and it was the original carpet in most of the areas. He did this work over a year ago so we have been through weather changes with not a problem. We had a previous property with laminate flooring that lifted when the humid weather of summer arrived! No problem at all with the flooring CLP installed!

The job starting with laying hardwood flooring. Then turned into a whole kitchen remodel. Bill saved me $11,000 by installing a brand new kitchen with all new cabinets and granite counter tops, instead of doing a cabinet refacing (thru another vendor). He helped with the design and picking of quality materials used and stayed within my budget. Bill and his team did an excellent job and I would recommend him to my friends and family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
